Monday, August 1, 2005 Living Well: Canoeist's dream of Olympic gold begins on Green Lake By BOB CONDOR
SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER When he was 13, Jordan Malloch's mom went to Green Lake to sign up her son for a rowing class. It was full, so she asked Malloch if he would like to try the canoeing and kayaking class still open to new students. "I said, 'Sure, why not,' " explained Malloch. "Right from that first class, I liked the feel of the water, how the boat moved under me. It helped that I was good at making the boat go fast." Two years later, Malloch was on the Junior National team in canoeing and since has competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. At 26, he is enjoying the peak years of his sport. Earning a medal at the 2008 Olympics in two-man canoeing at Beijing is his ultimate goal. But in Malloch's immediate purview are the twin goals of performing well at the U.S. Canoe/Kayak Sprint Racing National Championship right here in Seattle and the world championships in Croatia. The nationals are Aug. 9-13 at a familiar place for Malloch: Green Lake.

John MacGregor, an English barrister and founder of the Royal Canoe Club (est. 1865), is generally credited with being the initiator of modern sport canoeing. Between 1849 and 1869, MacGregor wrote a number of popular books describing his experiences on long canoe trips throughout Europe. Sport canoeing today may either involve recreational journeys or fixed-distance racing. Racing canoes are propelled by either sails or paddles. The International Challenge Cup, one of the oldest existing canoeing trophies, was originally offered by the New York Canoe Club (1885) as a perpetual challenge sailing prize. Canoe racing with paddles first became an official Olympic event at the Berlin games in 1936. The two types of Olympic canoe races are those among kayaks and Canadian canoes. The kayak , a buoyant arctic canoe that is completely covered except for its cockpit(s), is raced by both men and women. The Canadian, the typical North American canoe, is raced only by men. Canoes are also used as combination outdoors recreation-transportation vehicles. This type of canoeing is especially popular in the N United States. Whitewater canoeing, in which the vessel is navigated through rapids, is quite popular in many areas of the United States.

Canoeing and Kayaking Canoes and kayaks bring to mind serene images of gliding down a calm river or across a cool lake. However, canoe and kayak contests can be fiercely competitive. Racers speed past the finish line only fractions of seconds apart. For both canoe and kayak contests, there are two types of competitions: "sprints" in (calm) flatwater and "slaloms" in (more turbulent) whitewater. There are more differences between the sports of canoeing and kayaking than one might imagine. Kayaks are closed, except for the small cockpit where the paddler sits. Flatwater canoes are open. In whitewater races, kayaks are equipped with water-tight sprayskirts. Kayakers use double-bladed paddles while canoeists use one with a single-blade, paddling alternately from side to side. Canoeists kneel as they paddle, while kayakers sit in their boats with their legs extended forward.

Canoeing is the recreational or sporting activity of paddling a canoe or kayak . It usually refers exclusively to using a paddle to propel a canoe or kayak with only human muscle power. A kayak is a closed-top boat and is propelled using a paddle with two blades, whereas canoes are open-topped boats (sometimes with a removable spray skirt) propelled using single- or double-bladed paddles. Confusingly, canoeing is used as a generic term for both forms.

    • Sprint - the oldest discipline of ICF canoeing, sometimes referred to as "Racing". It involves principally kayaks , and some canoes . Flatwater races are over distances from 200 m to 1000 m. Slalom - Competitors are timed in completing a descent down the rapids of a whitewater course, in the process steering their canoes or kayaks through "gates" (a pair of suspended poles about 1m apart), including going up against the flow, across the flow, and surfing the standing waves of the rapids.
