Canoe/Kayak Sport History Since ancient times, cultures across the world have used the canoe for transportation and sport alike. In the American Pacific Northwest, native American tribesmen carved dugout canoes from whole trees that were large enough to carry as many as 50 people. Further North, Aleuts and other Arctic peoples built kayaks from a framework of whalebone and driftwood, over which were stretched sea lion skins treated with whale fat. The boats were a crucial part of Eskimo survival, necessary for fishing and hunting. Later, early European colonists in the New World built canoes of bark to navigate the wild rivers of North America.
Sporting Debut
Canoeing as a recreational sport was started in the 19th century by an English barrister, John MacGregor. MacGregor designed his own Eskimo-style kayak in 1845, and spent much of the next quarter-century taking the boat on extended trips across the rivers and lakes of Europe. During this time, he wrote a popular series of books and delivered lectures describing his canoeing experiences. MacGregor's adventures spawned many imitators, and in 1866 he founded the Royal Canoe Club to encourage further interest in the new sport. The club held its first regatta in 1867. By 1868 the RCC boasted 300 enthusiasts and had developed a fully realized set of rules to govern competitive canoe racing. The sport's popularity spread through Europe and North America, and the New York Canoe Club was founded in 1871.

Mogamed Ibragimov also brought the first olympic medal for Macedonia since its 1 hippodrome, 3 airports for sport aircrafts, 1 kayak trail etc.

Sports in the Republic of Macedonia
Gjorgji Hristov Sports in the Republic of Macedonia have a very important place. Sport activity has been determined with a legal regulation, which contributes to a planned development and individual work of the sport associations from the Republic of Macedonia. In the Republic of Macedonia there are 34 sport associations with more than 1,500 active clubs and 150,000 active members. There are more than 1,000 highly educated professionals from the sport area taking care of the expert work. All are involved in the educational process and the sport clubs and associations. The sport associations result in a rational system of competitions, according to the criteria and regulations of the international sport associations, and individuals, teams and representations participate at international competitions in Europe and the world. The Macedonian Olympic Committee takes care of the participation of the athletes of the Republic of Macedonia at the winter and summer Olympics, and it has participated with its teams at the Olympics held in 1991. The Macedonian athletes have many successful appearances at the international sport scene. Proof of this is the numerous medals from the Olympic Games, European, World and Balkan competitions. Darko Panchev was Europe's soccer MVP in 1991. Other notable Macedonian soccer players include Toni Savevski, Boban Babunski, Goce Sedloski, Gjordji Hristov, Toni Micevski, Artim Shakiri, Ilija Najdovski. The wrestler Shaban Trstena was a gold medallist at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and also won the silver medal at Seoul Olympics in 1988. Mogamed Ibragimov won the silver medal at the 1998 World Championship and is a three-time European champion (1995, 1996 and 1999). Mogamed Ibragimov also brought the first Olympic medal for Macedonia since its independence. On October 1, 2000 he defeated the two time Olympic Bronze medalist, Amirreza Khadem Azghadi (Iran) to take home the bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

Other forms of canoe and kayak racing, such as e.g. whitewater racing extreme racing dragon boat racing and outrigger canoe racing , are practised on white water and/or use quite different boats and paddles. See the article on canoeing for a more general overview. For the distinction between the terms canoe and kayak see the article on the canoe
This article discusses flatwater racing (sprint) and marathon racing , competitive forms of canoeing and kayaking on more or less flat water. Both sports are discussed here together, as equipment and paddling technique are very similar, if not identical. Both sports are governed by the International Canoe Federation (ICF). Flatwater racing (sprint), which is referred to by the IOC as " canoe/kayak flatwater ", is one of the two forms of the two canoeing disciplines that feature in the Summer Olympics , the other being canoe/kayak slalom . Marathon racing is not an Olympic sport. edit
Flatwater racing (Sprint)
Flatwater racing takes place on a straight course divided in lanes, on calm water. The distances recognised by the ICF for international races are 200 m, 500 m, and 1000 m. Each boat has his own designated lane, except for races over more than 1000 m, where there also may be turning points. Men race in canoes and in kayaks, women only in kayaks. For each race a number of heats, semi-finals and a final may be necessary, depending on the number of competitors.
