The earliest canoes were constructed from animal skins and tree bark, with modern designs the descendants of those used by North American indigenous cultures. Canoes, kayaks and folding canoes were all in evidence, but the Olympic life of the folding canoe was a brief one - it would never be seen again. Europeans remain the dominant nation in the sport, with Canadians causing the occasional upset. Women had to wait until after the Second World War, at the London Games of 1948 to take part in canoeing, and then only in one race, the 500 metres Kayak singles. A pairs race was added in Rome, in 1960, but the fours only came in in 1984. From the early 1970s until the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German Democratic Republic dominated the sport, their achievements long tainted, however, by evidence of a state-run doping programme.

History The origins of the sport of Canoeing can be traced as far back as five thousand years ago, in prehistoric times, when people crossed rivers and lakes in boats. Today’s kayak is a descendant of the Eskimo sealskin kayak. The canoe comes from the Canadian Indian birch-bark canoe. Impetus was given to the sport by a British lawyer, John MacGregor, in the second half of the nineteenth century. After studying the construction of ancient kayaks, he constructed a similar craft for use on European rivers and lakes. In 1866 he founded the Royal Canoe Club; the first competitions were held in the same year. Competitive Canoe/kayak flatwater racing is a relatively new sport. The International Canoe Federation (ICF), founded in 1924, is the sport’s highest authority internationally. The year 1924 also saw the addition of Canoe/kayak flatwater racing to the Summer Olympics programme. It was incorporated as a display event in the Paris Games, with competitors from America and Canada. The men’s Canoe / Kayak flatwater racing disciplines were first included in the Olympic Games competition schedule in 1936 in Berlin, while the women’s disciplines were included in 1948 in London. The first European Championship took place in 1933 at Prague.ÂÂ

"Maximize your potential when you're out there," coach Dave Fort told Wirsching and 13 teammates on the floor of the Green Lake Small Craft Center. "Make each stroke count." Wirsching, 16, a member of the Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club, didn't need to be told. He knew of the potential at the USA Canoe/Kayak National Championships, which run through Saturday at Green Lake. The championships feature 186 racers from 13 teams competing in one-, two- and four-person canoe and kayak races up to 5,000 meters. Some are past Olympians. Others, like Wirsching, are Rudys hoping to come home with gold.

Canoe/Kayak Select another sport Archery Baseball Canoe/Kayak Cycling Gymnastics Swimming Taekwondo Triathlon Since ancient times, cultures across the world have used the canoe for transportation and sport alike. In the American Pacific Northwest, native American tribesmen carved dugout canoes from whole trees large enough to carry as many as 50 people. Further north, Aleuts and other Arctic peoples built kayaks from a framework of whalebone and driftwood, over which were stretched sea lion skins treated with whale fat. The boats were a crucial part of Eskimo survival, necessary for fishing and hunting. Later, early European colonists in the New World built canoes of bark to navigate the wild rivers of North America. Canoeing got its start as a recreational sport in the 19th century with an English barrister, John MacGregor. MacGregor designed his own Eskimo-style kayak in 1845, and spent much of the next quarter-century taking the boat on extended trips across the rivers and lakes of Europe. During this time, he wrote a popular series of books and delivered lectures describing his canoeing experiences. MacGregor's adventures spawned many imitators, and in 1866 he founded the Royal Canoe Club to encourage further interest in the new sport. The club held its first regatta the following year and by 1868 boasted 300 enthusiasts and a fully realized set of rules to govern competitive canoe racing. The sport's popularity spread through Europe and North America, and the New York Canoe Club was founded in 1871.
