Message Boards Club History Early in the 1950's, Dr. Ted Houk, Sr., had a dream of involving young people in a "little league of water sports" and ultimately placing paddlers on Olympic teams. Houk was then known as the local "father" of the sport. Together with a handful of other early Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club members, Houk built the team and even designed and built the boats. In 1969, Houk obtained the old Aqua Theater on Green Lake's south end from Seattle's Parks Department. Together with Ben Dotson, Houk established the official club. The Sprint Team immediately began workouts under Head Coach Imre Szupkay. SCC gained respect by grooming excellent paddlers and developing strong supporters. Subsequently a number of competitions were hosted on Green Lake, including the 1973 National Flatwater Championships. Houk's health failed in 1975 and the club floundered for a time without leadership. In 1979 the city demolished most of the Aqua Theatre to make way for a new boathouse. Meanwhile, club emphasis shifted from Olympic flatwater racing to marathon racing. In 1979, the year after Houk's death, the club decided to host an annual Regatta to honor the man who had given it so much. The Ted Houk Memorial Regatta was born, featuring sprint and primarily marathon races. The event has been held every year since then, however today features sprint races exclusively.

History: How did this start?
Warm Winter Whitewater
The first instruction that I received was in February. So I pulled on the pile lined hand covers that I'd borrowed. The organizer laughed and told me that the water in the river was warm! "Yeah," he said, "spring water can stay the same temperature year around no matter what the weather is like." Just in case I tucked the "pogies" into the boat that I was renting. He was right. . . by the end of the day I was swimming in the river just for fun. That warm, spring fed water had a powerful effect on me that still hasn't worn off.
Searching the world
The first year that I kayaked full time I started in Colorado, but that required that I wear a drytop, and hardly made it fun to get wet. The same was true everywhere that I went that year: North Carolina, Washington D.C., New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Idaho. By the time that Winter arrived I began to wonder if I shouldn't just move back to Central America.
America bound
The next year that is what I did! That brought up another difficulty: How can I kayak when most can barely scrape by enough to stay alive? Living in the US is amazingly easier than living abroad; however, when I returned to visit my family at Thanksgiving in Dallas I wasn't much looking forward to going paddling, much less going back to where I'd lived, in North Carolina.

The energy Canoeing generates has made it one of the most popular sports worldwide in the last decade. Even non- professional athletes enjoy canoeing as a way to escape the hectic pace of the city. Description Canoe / kayak flatwater racing is made up of speed races in calm water. The main features of this sport are power and speed. Canoe / kayak flatwater incorporate speed races for nine individual competitors (Κ1, C1) or nine crews (K2, K4, C2) per course. A course consists of nine lanes, each 9 m wide. The contests take place in a Flatwater Racing Centre, and competitors paddle over 500 m or 1,000 m, respectively (Olympic distances). Arrangements for the heats, semi-finals and finals depend on the number of competitors taking part. The winning paddler or crew is the one whose bow’s point (the tip of the boat) crosses the finishing line first. The basic features of Canoe / kayak slalom are dexterity, power, speed and tactical skill. Canoe / kayak slalom racing takes place on a natural (a river) or artificial competition course. Competitors complete distances of 250 to 400 m, passing through a series of 18 to 25 ‘gates’ without touching them with their paddle, boat, head or body.

Petition to include slalom in 1999 Pan-American Games
To: Perry McGregor, Chair, White-Water in Ninety-Nine
From: Slalom athletes, organizers, officials, and fans
Date: December 17, 1997
Subject: Whitewater slalom at the 1999 Pan American Games We, the undersigned, support the inclusion of whitewater slalom in the 1999 Pan American Games. Slalom has been a part of the last two Olympics (Barcelona, 1992; Atlanta, 1996) and has been a resounding success at both events. In fact, the 1996 Olympic venue at the Ocoee River was crowded with 17,000 excited spectators each of the three days that slalom racing took place even though one of the those days was for practice, not competition. Slalom will also be a part of the next Olympics (Sydney, 2000), and there are indications that it will be included in 2004 as well. There are a number of reasons why the response to slalom has been overwhelmingly positive, and why we urge its inclusion:
    - Canoeing and kayaking are activities enjoyed the world over by millions of participants each year.
    - Slalom is a visually spectacular, captivating sport which attracts new fans each time it is presented and/or televised.
