Rarely has this been more graphically demonstrated than at the 1988 Olympic kayaking event in Seoul. Australia's Grant Davies was initially awarded the K1 1,000 metres event. Davies had signed the gold medal register and was about to take part in the medal ceremony when, after 11 minutes of deliberations, judges decided to give the race to American Greg Barton. They ruled the American had beaten Davies by just five one-thousandths of a second.

Canoe / Kayak Flatwater Racing
Rules Both men and women compete in Canoe / kayak flatwater racing disciplines, except that there are no mixed crews. There are twelve Olympic disciplines:  Nine for men, four at 500 m  (Κ1, Κ2, C1, C2) and five at 1,000 m  (K1, K2, K4, C1, C2) Three for women, at 500 m  (K1, K2, K4) In the World Championships and World Cups there are eighteen disciplines for men and nine for women, a total of 27. They include 200, 500 and 1,000 m disciplines. Weighing the boat and measuring its dimensions before the contest starts and after each race is an important competition procedure. Recent years have seen a rise in the standard of racing; a photo finish is often needed to decide the winner. Pam Boteler of the Washington Canoe Club in Washington, DC, made USA Canoe/Kayak history at the 2000 National Championships by becoming the first woman to compete in sprint canoe. The caveat at this Nationals was that women were permitted to compete - however they had to race against the men in the Intermediate Class only. Pam not only competed, but she won a bronze medal in the C1 500 Men's Intermediate race and teamed with Heather McNie (Canada) to take Gold in the C2 500 Men's Intermediate Race.
Pam has worked tirelessly - on and off the water - to pave the way for other women of all ages to follow and pursue their dream of competing within their own country and for their country in international competition, and ultimately the Olympic Games. And she has done this all working her full-time job as a senior employee with the U.S. Federal Government.
To help increase awareness of issues surrounding women’s canoe, Pam created

Fischer claims sixth gold after leading Germans to victory
Latest: Sunday October 08, 2000 11:13 PM Thomas Coex/AFP PENRITH, Australia (CNNSI.com) Birgit Fischer won the women's four on Saturday to become the all-time leading medal-winner in Olympic kayaking. The medal was Fischer's ninth as she won the event for the second straight time and for the third time in the last four Olympics. She tied swimmer Kristin Otto and Reiner Klimke of equestrian for the most golds by a German with six. Fischer, 38, also extended her own record for the longest span between golds by a woman. Her first title came 20 years ago in Moscow in the K-1. "The numbers of medals is simply not that important to me," Fischer said afterward. "I have another race tomorrow, so there won't be much celebrating tonight." Knut Holmann alo earned the title of Norway's greatest summer Olympian as the Europeans dominated the paddling finals.

Robinson Aims For Dual Gold
by Neville Oliver
The selection of the Australian team of 17 for the Atlanta Olympics caused a storm of protest from competitors who were overlooked for the squad. They included former world champion, Martin Hunter, and Iron Man, Trevor Hendy. Hopefully this serves to emphasise the strength of the party who will compete in Atlanta. Clearly, Australia's major medal chance lies with defending Olympic champion in the K1 1000, Clint Robinson of Queensland. At last year's World Championships he gained a silver medal in the event, emphasising his standing as a world class competitor. In the men's K4 1000, the crew of Paul Lynch, Brian Morton, Peter Scott (all from NSW) and Andrew Trim of Queensland finished fourth in the world last year. This boat has always given Australia an Olympic medal hope, and that is again the case for Atlanta.

Andreas Kiligaridis wrote the first page of the Greek canoeing history. Kiligaridis took the 13th place in the 500 meters of the single-seated canoe at the 2000 Olympics in Sidney. Olympics Update Canoeists Carry Olympic Torch When the Olympic Torch arrives at the Olympic Opening Ceremonies in Athens, Greece, in August, two of USA Canoe/Kayak's Olympic Team athletes will have already experienced an up close and personal connection to the flame. The U.S. Whitewater Slalom Canoe Team of Joe Jacobi and Matt Taylor have been selected to carry the torch when it passes through Atlanta, Georgia, on Friday, June 18th. Representing Samsung Electronics, an official sponsor of the Olympic Torch Relay, Jacobi and Taylor will run their torch segments in two high profile parts of the program. Taylor is scheduled to carry the Torch at 3:15 p.m. as it passes by the Georgia State Capital. At about 8:30 p.m., Jacobi will carry the torch through the Atlanta Underground just before it arrives in Centennial Olympic Park for the Torch Celebration. "To run with the torch in my hometown, particularly given Atlanta's Olympic history, is a special honor," said Taylor, who competed in his first Olympics in 2000. "This is also a fantastic way for our friends and family who can't make it to Athens to still connect to this summer's Olympic Games."

The History of the Sea Kayak and the Sport
The exact origin of the kayak is unknown, but we do know that the first people to navigate with kayaks were the Eskimos. It is believed to be the oldest type of boat that is still employed today, estimating over 3,000 years old. Kayaks were utilized by the Aleuts (inhabitants of the Aleutian archipelago near Alaska), the Inuits of Northern Canada, the Norse of Greenland and Iceland, Lapons in Northern Europe, and the Koryak and Chukchi tribes in Siberia. According to some historians, the word kayak means "clothing for going in the water" since it was built to the exact measurements of the paddler. Other historians say it means "man-small boat". Nowadays, many paddlers maintain that you "put on" a kayak, not get in one. In the Eskimo society, children could not navigate these boats until they became older and reached their maximum growth. Then, almost like a ritual, the family constructed a kayak especially for the child. It was said that if an Eskimo went out to hunt and did not return, he had borrowed the boat.
