The history of the canoe and kayak has been traced back thousands of years to when natives used these craft to hunt, fish and travel. Canoes were used mainly by the native North and South American Indians along with the Polynesian islanders of the Pacific. They were propelled through the water by single-bladed paddles usually made from wood.
The earliest known archaeological evidence of a canoe was unearthed at the tomb of a Sumerian king near the Euphrates River. This relic is estimated to be around 6000 years old. The counterpart of the American Indian canoe is the kayak which was introduced by Eskimos many years ago. These people inhabited the land to the far north of the American continent and Greenland.
A whalebone and driftwood frame, with a sea-lion skin stretched tautly over it and waterproofed with whale fat, hardly suggests a budding Olympic sport. Yet the kayaks that meant life to the Inuits in the Arctic for centuries have become the racing kayaks of the modern world - even if the building materials have changed.
The link was 19th century British barrister John MacGregor. He studied the ancient kayaks, designed a similar boat and disappeared into the rivers and lakes of Europe's wilderness to become a noted travel writer of his time. When others copied his boat, he founded the Royal Canoe Club, and canoe regattas began a year later in 1866..

In 1974, a group of individuals realized the potential for a race course on the east channel of the Wisconsin River in downtown Wausau. During the first thirteen years, the river channel itself was the primary focus of the work in bringing races to Wausau. The course has been developed, modified, and improved resulting in what is now "one of the nation’s best slalom courses".

http://www.contenu.nu/socog.html
Only one legal case concerning Web accessibility is known: Maguire vs. SOCOG . A single individual was triumphant in pursuing a complaint of Web inaccessibility. His adversary: Nothing less than the Olympic movement itself, as manifested in the Sydney Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games. This case teaches us that the legal need for accessibility is so clear-cut, and the means of achieving basic accessibility so straightforward, that even an unspeakably wealthy and powerful international organization can lose in a judicial proceeding.
Background
In Australia in June 1999, Bruce Maguire lodged a complaint with the HREOC ) under a law called the Disability Discrimination Act News article .) His complaint concerned the Web site of the Sydney Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games ( SOCOG ), which Maguire alleged was inaccessible to him as a blind person. According to the complaint, Maguire, unlike most blind people online, does not use a screen reader to read aloud the elements of a Web page. Instead, he uses a refreshable Braille display. But neither technology can understand and turn into voice an image that lacks a text equivalent. Nearly all Web pages online have some kind of graphics, including high-profile sites like those associated with major sporting events. Maguire contended that significant parts of the SOCOG Web site

Weight:

171 lbs Years on national team:
David Ford can't do any worst than at the 2000 Olympics. Ford entered the Sydney Games as the reigning world champion and one of Canada's top medal contenders. He finished 22nd. This year, he heads to Athens ranked second in the world and as the reigning overall World Cup champion. He was named Canada's male athlete of the year for 2003 at the Canadian Sport Awards. Ford competes in kayak singles whitewater slalom. The sport was originally a demonstration event at the 1972 Munich Games. It returned in 1992 as an official event. It was removed then reinserted as an Olympic sport in 2000. It is a grueling discipline which requires tremendous power. Paddlers navigate through a big whitewater 25-gate course. European countries, particularly those from the former East block are the international powerhouses.

    Olympic Motto
The Olympic motto "Citius, Altius, Fortius" is Latin for "Faster, Higher, Braver," but is universally accepted to mean "Swifter, Higher, Stronger." Olympic Creed The words of the Olympic Creed are attributed to Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games. "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not the win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well." De Coubertin adopted, and later quoted, this creed after hearing Ethelbert Talbot, the Bishop of Central Pennsylvania, speak at St. Paul's Cathedral on July 19, 1908, during the London Games. The service was given for the Olympic athletes, who were all invited. Talbot's exact words that day were: "The important thing in these Olympics is not so much winning as taking part."
