Evaluation of chemical repellents for reducing crop damage by dickcissels in Venezuela. International Journal of Pest Management 47(4):311-314. 242K Dickcissels are a threat to sorghum and rice in South America. Three bird repellent chemicals (methiocarb, methyl anthranilate, and anthraquinone) were applied to rice and evaluated for effectiveness in feeding trials. Flight Control, a 0.5% anthraquinone mixture used in U. S. rice fields to repel red-winged blackbirds appears to be a good prospect for reducing damage.

Dogs with Jobs:
Working Dogs Around the World
New book highlights amazing man-and-dog partnerships
This remarkable tribute to working dogs opens with a gallery of photos of the 21 dogs profiled in the book. From the Newfoundland Mas, Italy’s premier water rescue dog, to Tammy, a South African Border Collie protecting rare marine animals, Dogs with Jobs visits working canines in the US, Canada, Europe, Guam, Africa, England, and Australia to laud the performances of purebred and mixed breed dogs in both common and obscure jobs. Along with the sheep-herders, search and rescue dogs, and police dogs, the book profiles Snooper, a beagle who sniffs out termites; Buster, an Australian Cattle Dog who herds cattle; Wolf, a performing Borzoi; Kavik, a wolfdog movie and television star; Elmer, an Iditarod sled dog; Flintis, an Anatolian Shepherd who guard sheep and cheetahs; and Yanka and King, German Shepherds who sniff out land mines in Bosnia. The authors introduce their homage to working dogs with a quick look at the senses that make man’s best friend a capable working partner. Understanding the canine characteristics that make one dog a good search and rescue dog and another an ideal flock guardian enhances human knowledge and appreciation of these extraordinary animals.

Fossa!

Luke Dollar holds a fossa. Today, my 40th birthday, I was roused from my tent at dawn with an unusual and very welcome birthday present.
"Peter, many happy returns," whispered Nick Gordon urgently through the mesh. "Luke has caught a fossa and is waiting for you."
Bleary-eyed, throwing on whatever clothes fell to hand, I stumbled out of my tent and over to the work area of our camp. "Will we take the car?" I asked, rushing to gather my gear. "No, he's just about a kilometer up the road," Gordon said, thrusting a walkie-talkie into my hand. "You've got to hurry." As Angeluc Razafimanantsoa grabbed my camera bag, I stuffed notebook and digital camera into my pockets, snatched up the digital audio recorder from the equipment tent, and headed up the old logging road toward Lac Vert at a smart trot, Angeluc at my side. In a few minutes Luke Dollar appeared ahead. Appropriately enough, he wore a white t-shirt with a drawing of a fossa on it, and he had a boyish grin on his youthful face. With him were Angelin Razafimanantsoa and Leon Pierrot Rahajanirina, a tall, thin Malagasy who is Dollar's graduate student. Dollar shushed us with his index finger to his lips. We slowed and stepped quietly through the leaf litter, the forest pressing close on both sides.

AGE LINE - Lines occurring on old ivory, that appear blue or black, resulting from dirt filling in to cracks over a period of time. ALABRITE- A combination of alabaster powder and a matrix. It is a pale yellow color when new, but will darken with age. Look for mold lines, air bubbles, and a texture that fells "rougher" than true ivory. ANTLER- Antler is a natural ivory substitute. Deer, Elk, Moose and Caribou (Raindeer) antler are commonly used. Antlers are pure bone, the fastest bone growth known. Antler will generally appear more coarse and porous than bone and will lack any traces of striations and should display little or no sense of longitudinal graininess. In cross sections irregular holes appear rather than the regular narrow channels seen in bone. Except in the most heavily worked objects, traces of the spongy interior of antler are usual preserved. There is no marrow cavity as in bone.

Wolf Population
Healthy return, but it's too soon to cut protections
November 19, 2004 Wolves did not fare well in the presidential campaign. In one of the Republicans' anti-John Kerry commercials, a pack of wolves symbolizing terrorism prowled through a forest as a voice warned that "weakness attracts those who are waiting to do America harm." But as much as humans invoke wolves to arouse fear, these canines generally shy away from people. That they again range across the upper Great Lakes is testament to the Endangered Species Act and to dedicated activists, researchers and wildlife crews who fought for them. The Upper Peninsula now hosts at least 77 wolf packs, and a wolf found near Rogers City this fall raises the possibility that they also are crossing the Mackinac Straits. This winter's census may answer that question. But the bigger issue is how much protection to keep giving the gray wolf, with the remnant Minnesota population having expanded across northern Wisconsin and into the UP. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service already has moved the wolf from an endangered to a threatened species, and it now wants to drop all federal protection in 21 Northeastern states.
