Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women. There will be an estimated 157,400 deaths from lung cancer in 2001, accounting for 28% of all cancer deaths. What is Lung Cancer? The lungs are two sponge-like organs found in the chest cavity. The right lung has three sections, called lobes. The left lung has two lobes. It is smaller because the heart takes up more room on that side of the body. The lungs bring air in and out, taking in oxygen and getting rid of carbon dioxide gas, a waste product of the body. The lining, which surrounds the lungs and helps to protect them and to facilitate the sliding motion during respiration, is called the pleura. The chest cavity is called the pleural cavity. The trachea (windpipe) brings air down into the lungs. It divides into tubes called the bronchi, which divide into smaller branches called the bronchioles. At the end of the bronchioles are tiny air sacs known as alveoli.
Common Types of Lung Cancer Lung cancer is usually divided into two major types. The first type is small cell lung cancer (SCLC). The second type is non-small cell lung cancer NSCLC. Sometimes a lung cancer may have characteristics of both types. This is called mixed small cell/large cell carcinoma.

If your child has cancer, the following general information will help you care for him / her.
Dental care
Check with your child's hematologist / oncologist before you take your child to the dentist.
Medications
  • Only give your child acetaminophen (Tylenol®). Do not give your child aspirin, any medicine that contains aspirin (Contac®), ibuprofen or any medicine that contains ibuprofen (Advil®).
  • Do not continue your child's immunization program (baby shots) until your child's hematologist says you may. Your child should not be in a household with a child who has received a live vaccine (oral polio or MMR, measles-mumps-rubella) in the last 30 days. Siblings can receive a "killed form" of the polio vaccine, which is a shot that is safer for the child getting chemotherapy.
Safety tips
  • When your child's blood count (ANC) is low, avoid crowds or people who have active infections. Your child's doctor will let you know when you need to take extra precautions to protect your child from infection.

General Ovarian Cancer Statistics
Ovarian cancer is a serious and under-recognized threat to women's health.
  • Ovarian cancer, the deadliest of the gynecologic cancers, is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among U.S. women.
  • Ovarian cancer occurs in 1 out of 57 women.
  • It is expected that 25,580 women will be diagnosed with the disease in 2004.
  • An estimated 16,090 women in the United States will die from ovarian cancer in 2004.
  • Currently, 50 percent of the women diagnosed with ovarian cancer die from it within five years; among African-American women only 48 percent survive five years or more.
Ovarian cancer is very treatable when it is detected early, but the vast majority of cases are not diagnosed until the cancer has spread beyond the ovaries.
  • In cases where ovarian cancer is detected before it has spread beyond the ovaries, more than 90 percent of women will survive longer than five years.
  • Only 25 percent of ovarian cancer cases in the U.S. are diagnosed in the early stages.

Historic Perspective What is Cancer? Categories of Cancer Cancer Diagnosis Cancer Facts and the War on Cancer General Definition of Cancer General Definition of Cancer Cancer Terms Cell Biology of Cancer Cancer Risk Factors Unit Review There are many texts and references that attempt to define cancer. The simplest definition is from the American Cancer Society (ACS). According to the ACS, cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. If the spread is not controlled, it can result in death. Characteristics of Cancer Abnormality Cells are the structural units of all living things. Each of us has trillions of cells, as does a growing tree. Cells make it possible for us to carry out all kinds of functions of life: the beating of the heart, breathing, digesting food, thinking, walking, and so on. However, all of these functions can only be carried out by normal healthy cells. Some cells stop functioning or behaving as they should, serving no useful purpose in the body at all, and become cancerous cells.
