PROSTATE CANCER AND DIET Gabe Mirkin, M.D. All men will develop prostate cancer if they live long enough and lack of vitamin Dmay be the most likely cause. For the first time, Harvard researchers offer a logical explanation for the very high incidence of prostate cancer (3). Prostate cancer is most common in men who eat a high fat, high-saturated fat, high -polyunsaturated fat and high partially hydrogenated fat diet (1), found in meat, chicken, dairy products and extracted vegetable oils. Prostate cancer is also very common in men who eat a high-calcium and low vitamin D diet (2). For example, diary products increase risk and vitamin D supplements reduce risk. A high-meat and high dairy diet lowers blood levels of the active form of vitamin D [1,25(OH)(2)D]. Meat is loaded with phosphorous, and diary products are loaded with calcium and phosphorus which lower blood levels of the active form of vitamin D called 1,25(OH)(2)D vitamin D. Sulfur-containing amino acids from animal protein make blood acidic which suppresses active vitamin D production. Additionally, high fructose consumption in sugary products lowers blood levels vitamin D (2,3). So the combination of meat, chicken, diary products, calcium supplements and lack of vitamin D combine to increase a man's chances of getting prostate cancer.

Skin Care Prostate Cancer and the Diet Every year prostate cancer killed 31,500 American, One of every six American will be diagnosed of prostate cancer in his lifetime. Suggested diet: 1). Eat less red meat ( beef, pork, lamb, or veal). Harvard researchers reported that men who ate red meat (beef, pork, lamb, or veal) most frequently had more than double the risk of advanced prostate cancer compared to men who ate those meats least often. 2). Don't take calcium more than 2,000 milligrams a day. Vitamin D may protect the prostate. However, it’s safe to have Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs)—1,000 mg a day for men 50 or younger and 1,200 mg for men over 50. 3).Take selenium (200 micrograms a day, such as high-selenium yeast) and vitamin E (400 IU of alpha-tocopherol) daily might lower the risk of prostate cancer in healthy men. NIH is launching a 7- 12 years clinic study of prostate cancer prevention (SELECT - Sel enium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention T rial). To be a volunteer, you must have a PSA no higher than 4 and must be at least 55 years old (at least 50 if you’re African American). Diet Is Not a Panacea, but It Cuts Risk of Cancer
By Jane E. Brody December 1, 1998
When words like "cure" and "prevention" appear in the title of a book about a chronic, disabling or life-threatening disease, they often enrich authors and publishers at the public's expense. Such is likely the case with a current best seller, "The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet" by Dr. Bob Arnot, the medical correspondent for NBC. The book's premise that adopting a diet rich in soy, flaxseed and fish oils can prevent breast cancer has been soundly denounced by breast cancer researchers and patient advocates alike as promising something it cannot possibly deliver.
Eating to Reduce Cancer Risk
No food can prevent cancer, but a diet that emphasizes fruits, vegatables and whole grains lowers the risk. Experts recommend these foods:
  • Dried beans
  • Tomatoes
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Milk
  • Salmon
  • Carrots
  • Green tea
  • All dark leafy vegetables
  • Garlic and onions
  • Whole grains
  • All-bran cereal
  • All fruits, especially apples, oranges, strawberries and grapes
  • Red peppers
  • Olive oil As Fran Visco, president of the National Breast Cancer Coalition put it, "There is no breast cancer prevention diet," and the basis for Dr. Arnot's assertion is too flimsy to warrant a radical dietary shift based on a "bet," as he put it, that it will deliver the goods.

Eighty-six Japanese men out of 6860 male participants in a prospective study of cancer were married to women who had breast cancer. These 86 men were compared with the remaining men by dietary factors that were identified during two different time periods. Based on the assumption that there is a similarity between husbands and wives in their dietary patterns, it was noted that the spouses of women with breast cancer consumed more beef or meat, butter/margarine/cheese, corn, and wieners than the other

Karin Michels, Lead researcher of the Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts: "The most important thing I want to get out is they should eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables in spite of all these findings. ...fruits and vegetables definitely protect for other important diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and potentially other cancers. These are some of the best foods we can eat - there is no doubt about it." (the Journal of the National Cancer Institute)
