The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet by Dr Bob Arnot Reviewed by Stephen Terrass MRNT Buy it Online New York Times
It would seem that The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet is well-meaning and truly committed to the agenda of helping women make an informed choice. The book contains information that could well save many lives. Dr Arnot draws conclusions from numerous research studies, and comes up with a diet and lifestyle plan that heavily promotes the use of soy foods, flaxseed, olive oil, fish oils and lots and lots of vegetables and fruit. At the same time it warns the reader of high-risk foods (e.g. hydrogenated fats, fatty red meat, etc.) and high-risk lifestyle factors (e.g. being over or underweight). The book also tries to explain breast cancer mechanisms and discusses the main drugs being used in treatment and prevention.
Unfortunately, the book is full of flaws, both in terms of content and factual accuracy. The messages it tries to get across are often overstated, occasionally misleading and at times downright contradictory.
The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet
Another glaring weakness in content is the lack of discussion about HRT. Although it is mentioned on occasion, the space allotted to it seems unjustifiably small and incomplete. This is not due to the fact that the book is totally dedicated to nutrition, as he frequently discusses other types of drugs, and in far more depth.

Over the decades, numerous people have written their own autobiographies on how they turned around irreversible end-stage cancers with the macrobiotic diet. Anthony Satillaro, MD, wrote about his metastatic prostate cancer in "Recalled by Life". Hugh Faulkner, MD, reversed his cancer of the pancreas six years ago, when he was 74, and wrote about it in "Physician Heal Thyself". Ealine Nussbaum described her incredible siege with metastatic cancer of the ovaries in her 30's which spread to liver lungs and the backbones. The backbones collapsed and, after two years of failed surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, she was given three weeks to live with her pneumonia. In fact, she was told that antibiotics could not he used for the pneumonia because she was so weak from the vicious spread of cancer, that the antibiotics might shorten her three weeks. It was at this point she turned to macrobiotics and wrote the story of her cure in "Recovery". That was over eight years ago, and I delight in lecturing with her each year, as I see her vivaciously returning from jogging.

Dr. Kelly's Metabolic Cancer Cure Diet By Dr. WIliam Donald Kelley, DDS
http://educate-yourself.org/cancer/kellymetabolicdiet13dec02.shtml
Dec. 13, 2002 About the year 424 BC Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, made the statement, "Your food shall be your medicine and your medicine shall be your food." Try as we may, we have not been able to improve upon this basic truth. This is particularly true when it comes to the successful treatment of the cancer patient. At least 86% of all cancer conditions could be adequately treated and/or prevented by diet alone. It never ceases to amaze me at the number of learned as well as ignorant persons who scoff when diet is mentioned. They all seem to believe that no matter what is placed into the body, by some magical process, it makes for perfect health. Yet these same people are very fastidious and concerned about what, how and how much food is fed to their pedigreed dogs and cats and their registered cattle and horses. It is ironic that they cannot see that their own health is equally dependent upon a proper balanced nutritional process. Kelley Almond Diet
From the first printing of this book in 1967 we have called our diet the "Kelley Almond Diet" because the principal protein is almond and vegetable protein. Raw almonds are a very good source of protein and may be used as directed: 10 almonds at breakfast and 10 almonds at lunch.A mixture of raw almonds, cashews, pecans, filberts, Brazil nuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds is recommended to supplement protein during the first six months when meat proteins are severely restricted. These should be eaten any time up to 1:00 p.m.Cashew nuts are desirable, especially if the patient is also suffering from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Cancer Prevention Diet
A healthy diet may help prevent some cancers. The ideal cancer prevention diet is low in fat and high in fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Staying physically active and limiting alcohol are also factors to consider. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. One third of all cancer deaths in the United States may be related directly to how people eat. Eating is something that people can control. According to the National Cancer Institute, diet has a definite role in preventing cancer. A person should eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables each day. At least five servings each day is recommended. Certain fruits and vegetables may protect against certain cancers. They contain phytochemicals or plant chemicals that seem to have cancer fighting properties. Dark green, orange, and yellow fruits and vegetables may protect against lung cancer. These foods contain beta-carotene, which is believed to lower cancer risk. Beta-carotene is a powerful antioxidant. Examples of these include:

WWW The Soy Daily™ Prostate Cancer and Diet - Animal Fat (Bad) and Soy (Good) May Cause 10-Fold Difference in U.S. vs. Japan LOS ANGELES, Oct 21, 2004 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ A just-published research study by Urological Sciences Research Foundation may help explain a quandary that has perplexed medical scientists for decades: why is prostate cancer so much more common in the West than in Asia? Diet has long been chief suspect for the difference. The new study compared dietary influences on prostate tissues of Japanese men who spent their life in Japan vs. other Japanese men who spent their life in the U.S. The Western diet, relatively rich in animal fat and poor in soy, was found to exert cancer-causing influences that could be traced directly into prostate tissues. "This study is important because it's among the first to look directly at tissues, in an attempt to link diet and cancer," commented Professor Alan Partin of Johns Hopkins University. The side-by-side tissue comparison appears in the October issue of the medical journal Urology and is the product of a 5-year collaboration between U.S. and Japanese scientists.

(one called it the ph miracle diet ..author is "young" I believe..the other the "halleluja diet" and I have no clue the source of this one) They both report they are in full remission; one for 25 years and one for 3 years. Neither one opted for chemo. They eat mostly raw veggies and whole grains. No dairy , sugar, white flour or yeast what so ever. They both look good and feel great. Have any of you heard of good results with this kind of diet? Kim Back to top leo

The American cancer Society recommends the following dietary recommendations forcancer prevention. Choose most of the foods you eat from plant sources.

Causes of Cancer
Cancer and Diet
Although largely unproven by laboratory experiments, evidence from population studies indicates a connection between what we eat and our risk for certain kinds of cancer.
Here are some examples of findings:
  • Populations which consume diets consisting largely of starch, with a high fiber content and a low intake of fat, have less incidence of colon-rectum and female breast cancers.
  • People who move from a country with a low incidence of colon-rectum cancer to one with a high incidence, quickly increase their risk. In the second generation their risk is no different from that of the general population. Changes in diet are thought to be the key factor.
  • Subgroups in Western countries provide indications of the dietary connection. For instance Seventh-day Adventists, many of whom practice a degree of vegetarianism, have about one-third less incidence of colon-rectum cancer and much less female breast cancer than the general population.
The American Cancer Society recommends the following dietary recommendations for cancer prevention:
  • Choose most of the foods you eat from plant sources. For example, eat five or more servings of fruit and vegetables each day. Eat other foods from plant sources, such as breads, cereals, grain products, rice, pasta or beans several times each day.

    in the Typical American Diet
A simple, straightforward diet, not a strange or complicated one, is recommended for reducing your own and your children's likelihood of cancer. Here are some good guidelines:
    Increase consumption of:
    • Fibrous foods such as whole-grain cereals, fruits and vegetables.
    • Foods rich in vitamin C, such as oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, peppers, and cantaloupe; and of foods rich in vitamin A - carrots, sweet potatoes, peaches, apricots, and dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach. (Do not use a vitamin A supplement exclusively, because of possible toxicity.)
    • Cruciferous vegetables (so called because their flowers form the pattern of a cross)-broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, kohlrabi and cauliflower.
    Reduce consumption of:
    • High-fat foods, including whole-milk cheese, lard, fatty cuts of beef, eggs and deep-fried foods. (Infants under one year should be kept on a higher-fat diet to meet their calorie needs.)
    • Salt-cured, salt-pickled and smoked foods. (These carry a danger that carcinogenic chemicals will form during cooking or digestion.)

    Prostate Cancer: Prevention and Survival
By Neal Barnard, M.D. Just as women on high-fat Western diets have more estrogens circulating in their blood and a higher risk of cancer of reproductive organs, a similar process occurs in men. High-fat diets alter the amounts of testosterone, estrogen, and other hormones in both men and women. The prostate gland is just below the bladder in men, where it produces semen to be mixed with sperm cells. Cancer of the prostate is the most common form of cancer in American men, occurring primarily in older individuals. Cancer cells are found in the prostates of about 20 percent of men over the age of 45 years. In most cases, these cancer cells do not develop into cancerous tumors that affect the overall health or life span of the individual. However, in many cases, the cancer does grow, invade surrounding tissues, and spread to other parts of the body. Although the disease varies greatly from one person to the next, the average patient loses nine years from his normal life span. One in ten men will develop prostate cancer at some point in his life.

    • Research shows that vegetarians have lower rates of colon cancer than non-vegetarians, and that incidence of colon and rectal cancer has been strongly linked to the consumption of meat. In a study of over 88 000 women aged 34 to 59 years, women eating red meat daily ran over twice the risk of developing colon cancer than women eating red meat less than once a month. Exactly how a vegetarian diet is protective against colon cancer is unclear and a great deal of research is being carried out in this area. It has been suggested that secondary bile acids may be a causal factor, and research has shown that vegetarians have lower levels of secondary bile acids than non-vegetarians. The role of dietary fibre in prevention of colon cancer may also be important. Other dietary components associated with high fibre foods, such as folate, have also been implicated as having protective effects.

If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, you should know that the role of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer is under investigation. But, because many men diagnosed with prostate cancer can expect to live long lives, a healthy diet—one low in fat and rich in fruits and vegetables—is recommended. Such a diet will help prevent heart disease and unwanted weight gain, and may help in cancer prevention.
