"Our best estimate is that if we all ate a perfect, healthy diet, we could eliminate maybe 35 percent of cancer deaths," said Dr. Michael Thun of the American Cancer Society. ( 95K AIFF sound or 95K WAV sound We've heard over and over again: keep your weight down, eat more fruits, vegetables and grains and stay away from fat. Adding certain foods to the diet has been shown to prevent a variety of cancers, from breast and prostate to colorectal. But what's needed is real food, not vitamin and mineral supplements from a bottle. "It would be easy if we could just take a pill," but that's not the answer, Thun said.

Dr. Micheal Thun, American Cancer Society
Doctors say better eating habits over the past 60 years have reduced stomach cancer deaths by 85 percent. "It's an example that cancer is not inevitable," Thun said. ( 150K AIFF sound or 150K WAV sound ) Sixty years ago, transportation wasn't as efficient as it is now, so people had less access to fresh produce. And refrigeration was less sophisticated than today, so people were forced to eat more smoke and preserved meats. Nitrates, used to preserve those meats, have been linked to cancer.

Scientists say substance found in more nutritious fare, too

Acrylamide forms when a naturally occurring amino acid called asparagine is heated to very high temperatures with certain sugars such as glucose. Very high doses of the substance have been linked to cancer in animals. BELTSVILLE, Maryland (AP) A possibly cancer-causing substance appears not only in popular fast foods, but in everyday, nutritious staples, too, government scientists say. Acrylamide, a substance that at very high doses causes cancer in animals, made headlines last spring when Swedish scientists discovered it lurking in popular foods like french fries and chips. High-carbohydrate foods cooked at very high temperatures seem to contain far more acrylamide than other foods. But products with lower levels that are eaten more frequently than junk-food snacks from vitamin-packed breakfast cereal to toast and coffee increase the U.S. population's overall exposure, the Food and Drug Administration said Monday.

Most in U.S. unaware of cancer-obesity link
From Miriam Falco CNN Medical Unit WASHINGTON (CNN) The problems of obesity and cancer are major concerns for many Americans, but the majority appear unaware that being overweight increases their risk for the disease. An American Institute for Cancer Research study sought to see how much Americans knew about a link between obesity and the risk for cancer. The institute and World Cancer Research Fund presented the data Thursday at a scientific conference on diet and cancer in Washington. The results of a June poll of 1,205 adults show that most Americans know their chances of getting heart disease and diabetes rise when they are overweight, but just 25 percent of those polled knew the risk of cancer also increases. Epidemiologists who have studied the prevalence of cancer amongst the different populations of the world have found that diet determines 40 percent of all cancers. The incidence of different types of cancer in different regions points to diet being instrumental in the causing of cancer. Studies appear to disprove genetic determinants, as cancer incidence amongst immigrants to a new country quickly takes on the characteristic incidence of those already living there. Advertisement Eating the wrong type of food can increase one’s chances of getting cancer by 40 percent. Eating the right kind of food containing cancer-fighting molecules, such as fruit and vegetables, can make a huge difference.

Diet and cancer
Introduction It is estimated that up to 30 - 40 % of all cancers are preventable by changing our diet. This prevention is two fold : it involves avoiding foods that are unhealthy for us, and consuming foods that are beneficial for us. Foods that are unhealthy for us include; fatty foods , foods containing animal fat , foods that are high in salt, over processed, over cooked and poorly stored. Foods that are healthy for us are plant based foods, foods low in fat or salt, minimally processed and properly cooked. What evidence is there for this? Certain specific cancers (stomach and colon) are associated with the high fat, salt and low fibre content of many of the foods in the Western diet. The association of diet and stomach cancer and colon cancer is illustrated by the following evidence. While the exact causes of stomach cancer are unknown, the highest rates worldwide are found in Japan (where it is the number one cause of cancer death). In this case, the clearest correlation for dietary influence on stomach cancer has been for consumption of large amounts of food that has been cured, smoked, salted, pickled or heavily spiced.

Bowel cancer and diet
I'm worried about bowel cancer because my grandfather has just been diagnosed with it. I know that a few years ago we were all told to include lots of fibre in our diet but what else should you do diet-wise to try to reduce the risks? Will
Dr Trisha Macnair responds
Evidence has been growing in recent years about links between various things in our diet and bowel cancer (more formally, colorectal cancer). No food alone is a cause of bowel cancer, but making healthy changes to your diet can reduce your risk and may also protect you from other diseases too. Research has focused on the following types of food: Fibre : recent studies have questioned some of the older evidence that a high fibre diet can help to prevent cancer. Fibre from fruit and vegetables, brown bread, bran, oats and other sources helps to speed up the passage of cancer-causing substances through the bowel. Fibre may also produce protective chemicals when fermented in the gut - increasing the amount of natural fibre in your diet seems to be key here because fibre supplements such as ispaghula don't have the same effect, probably because they don't produce the same chemicals on fermentation. But the jury is still out on the exact benefits of fibre. The Mediterranean diet : it's been estimated that about one in four bowel cancers could be prevented if developed Western countries switched to the Mediterranean diet. Some claim this is because of low levels of red meat and fat in the diet, while others claim the benefits are linked to large amounts of fruit, vegetables and olive oil.

Obesity increases the risk of cancers of the esophagus, colorectum, breast, endometrium, and kidney. (1) In one large cohort, for example, the heaviest members had death rates of all cancers combined that were 52% higher (for men) and 62% higher (for women) than the rates in men and women of normal weight. (2) [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Alcohol causes cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, and liver, and slightly increases the risk of breast cancer. For several types of cancer, adequate fruit and vegetable intake probably lowers the risk. Many other dietary factors, including meat, dietary fiber and specific nutrients, appear to influence risk, although their contribution is not yet clear. (1)

In conclusion, findings from the IWHS suggest that greater adherence to the cluster of nutrition-related behaviors recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans may be associated with a lower risk of cancer. Specifically, risk in postmenopausal women may be reduced for cancers of the colon, bronchus and lung, breast and uterus. Better compliance with the Dietary Guidelines was associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer, but fortunately its incidence is a small proportion of total cancer. Dairy foods and colon cancer
December 3, 1999 Web posted at: 3:13 PM EST (2013 GMT) In this story: The studys results Vitamin D may help Eat a high-fiber diet RELATEDS By Raymond Lie (WebMD) Got milk? If the results of a recent study hold true, you might consider reaching for a tall glass of the one percent. However, some experts say a grain of salt might go well with your beverage, too. The study, published in the September 23 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association and discussed at the annual meeting of the American Dietetic Association in October, found that people who ate a diet rich in low-fat dairy products may have fewer abnormal, pre-cancerous cell growths in the colon than people on conventional diets. This may be encouraging news for people fighting colorectal cancer, which claims more than 56,000 American lives every year, according to the American Cancer Society. About 130,000 new cases are diagnosed every year.

This is especially true with a life-threatening disease such as cancer. Yin, or outward centrifugal movement, results in expansion, while yang, or inward centripetal movement, produces contraction. We can see these universal tendencies in the human body as the alternating expansion and contraction of the heart and lungs, for example, or in the stomach and intestines during the natural process of digestion. Once the yin or yang determination is made, dietary recommendations can be more specifically aimed at alleviating the particular condition of excess. Location of the tumor in the body generally determines whether a cancer is more yin or yang. However, in some cases, cancer in a specific organ can take either a yin or yang form. A failure to understand the distinction between the general tendencies of yin and yang illnesses explains why some people experience serious side effects from certain medications and others do not. It also explains why so many nutritional therapies and popular health diets produce mixed results or fail entirely. Vitamin C, for instance, is a yin substance that can benefit people with a cold caused by overconsumption of contractive yang foods. However, vitamin C taken in supplement form rather than in daily whole foods can further weaken persons with a cold caused by intake of excessive yin because it contributes further expansive energy to their system.

It is estimated that one thrid of cancers are linked to diet. In addition, 3 to 4 MILLION cancer cases could be prevented EACH YEAR simply by making dietary changes!! Now that is wonderful news. The choices you make today can affect your quality of living tomorrow. It is a known fact that populations with higher rates of cancer have different dietary habits than those with lower rates. This article will cover several different nutrition issues related to breast cancer. For the most part, the same dietary recommendations that help reduce the risk of other cancers, heart disease, and osteoporosis apply to breast cancer risk reduction. Research has shown that women who eat their fair share of fruits and vegetables have much lower rates of breast cancer. The minimum recommendation is to eat 5 servings per day, aiming for 10 servings.
