Cancer: diet and physical activity's impact Facts
  • Cancer accounts for 7.1 million deaths annually (12.5% of the global total). Dietary factors account for about 30% of all cancers in Western Countries and approximately up to 20% in developing countries; diet is second only to tobacco as a preventable cause. Approximately 20 million people suffer from cancer; a figure projected to rise to 30 million within 20 years. The number of new cases annually is estimated to rise from 10 million to 15 million by 2020. More than half of all cancer cases occur in developing countries.
Cancer is becoming an increasingly important factor in the global burden of disease. The estimated number of new cases annually is expected to rise from 10 million in 2000 to 15 million by 2020. Some 60% of these cases will occur in the less developed parts of the world. More than 7 million people now die each year from cancer. Yet with the existing knowledge, at least one-third of cancer cases that occur annually throughout the world could be prevented. While tobacco use is the single largest causative factor -accounting for about 30% of all cancer deaths in developed countries and an increasing number in the developing world – dietary modification and regular physical activity are significant elements in cancer prevention and control. Overweight and obesity are both serious risk factors for cancer. Diets high in fruit and vegetables may reduce the risk for various types of cancer, while high levels of preserved and/or red meat consumption are associated with increased cancer risk.

Are there any health hazards associated with Chinese food? Of course a lot of Chinese foods are high in fat and cholesterol, but what I am worried about is the cooking methods. Generally, they heat the oil to a very high temperature and then throw in the meat or vegetable and make a big sound, sometimes the food even catches fire. As far as I know, I think oil heated to a high temperature, to the point where it begins to emit smoke, may contain cancer-causing substances. Is that true? I guess I am kind of obsessed about cancer because my grandfather died of stomach cancer two years ago and I was with him for several months before he died. What are the major causes of cancer? How can we avoid them? If we eat some cancer-causing substance, are we more likely to get stomach or intestinal cancer because that's where the food passes through, or are we equally likely to get other cancers? I mean, do a person's digestive organs have a particularly high susceptibility to cancer compared to other parts of the body because they are exposed to the food, which is where almost all the carcinogens come from? Diet History Questionnaire: Development of the DHQ Nutrient Database
The nutrient and food group database, created for analyzing the DHQ, is based on national dietary intake data from the 1994-96 US Department of Agriculture's Continuing Survey of Food Intake by Individuals (CSFII). These 24-hour dietary recall data were used to decide which foods to include on the DHQ and what the portion sizes should be. The CSFII foods were placed into food groups consistent with line items on the DHQ. For example, there are many different individual foods that are subsumed by the line item, "lasagna, stuffed shells, stuffed manicotti, ravioli, or tortellini." The CSFII data were analyzed to provide a mean nutrient or food group value, by gender and portion size, based on all reported intakes of the various lasagna, stuffed shells, etc., reported on 24-hour recalls in CSFII. This produced a single nutrient or food group value by portion size and gender for each food on the DHQ. Nutrient values were not computed separately by age group because our research (cited below) showed that separate nutrient values by age group did not improve estimates. However, for investigators interested in adding age-specific values in the database, the Diet*Calc software has the flexibility to allow you to do so. For a more detailed description of the method used to create the values for the DHQ database, please see:

Study: Americans super-sizing at home, too
Incorporate healthy goals into everyday habits CNN Presents: Fat Chance America's fat epidemic ... American Cancer Society WASHINGTON (AP) The American Cancer Society, suggesting that the cancer risk in flab is as bad as the risk in tobacco, is about to start a drive to encourage people to lose weight and get more active. The Great American Weigh In, to take place March 5, is modeled after the Great American Smokeout, now 30 years old, the society's annual effort to encourage people to give up tobacco. "One third of (cancer) deaths are related to diet and inactivity," said Colleen Doyle, the group's director of nutrition and physical activity. About 186,000 lives a year could be saved if people changed those living habits, she said. Dr. JoAnn Manson of Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital, who is not part of the Weigh In program, said, "Obesity will soon surpass smoking as the leading cause of preventable deaths, and many of those deaths will be from cancer."

The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet
by Robert Arnot, M.D. INTRODUCTION For decades, breast cancer has stood alone among major diseases, because its victims lacked even a single practical preventive measure with which to protect themselves. In most epidemics, we've had the power to defend ourselves: vaccines for the flu, lowered cholesterol for heart disease , smoking cessation for lung cancer , lowered blood pressure for stroke , and safe sex for AIDS . But despite the decades-long, terrifying increase in new breast cancer cases, women have stood virtually powerless to prevent the disease. That had left a quiet sense of desperation among survivors like 37-year-old Deborah McCurdy, mother of four. Deborah had advanced breast cancer that required four cycles of intensive chemotherapy, aggressive radiations and a bone marrow transplant "My little girl was only two. I had to live to see her grow up." Deborah finally has a chance to do just that. The good news is this: In the spring of 1998 there emerged the first real hope for women like Deborah that breast cancer might be prevented. Years of investment in breast cancer research is finally beginning to pay off and yield major discoveries by leading scientists working in North America and Europe in nearly a dozen different scientific fields. Most of these discoveries were unveiled in bits and pieces and so are virtually unknown to the public at large, with little drawn together into a comprehensive plan. What appears is a great untold secret: Nutrition is emerging as the most important way to prevent breast cancer.
