Virtual Tourist of Alberta and the Canadian Rockies
Howdy!
The largest city in Alberta , Calgary (a.k.a. "Cowtown" to fans and detractors alike) is located in the south-western part of the province. Calgary is home to the world-famous "Calgary Exhibition and Stampede," and is ideally situated in the province for use as a "base" to explore the natural, cultural, and historic wonders of Alberta . Home to much of the Canadian oil and gas industry, Calgary is a vibrant modern city filled with skyscrapers and modern amenities. The city has taken care to ensure that numerous "green" areas are easily accessible, combining the best of both worlds. The City of Calgary website provides extensive information on Calgary's history, economy and government. The City of Calgary has a population of roughly 850,000, and lies at an altitude of 1,049m. The weather in Calgary varies quite dramatically, from lows reaching -40C (albeit rarely) in the winter, to highs in excess of 30C in the summer. Calgary is subject to periodic "chinook winds" of warm air from the mountains during the winter which can cause the temperature to rise by more than 15C in just a few hours.
Some History
The human history of the Calgary region begins, as with all Alberta, with the native Canadians, over 12,000 years ago. The cultures which existed during the arrival of the European traders and settlers were the Blackfoot, Sarcee and Stoney. The first Europeans included David Thompson and Peter Fidler in the 1780's and 1790's, both of whom were associated with the fur trade.

They are midsized between ducks and swans and enjoy both water and land. There are many races of Canada Geese, ranging from the Mallard-sized 'cackling' race to giant Canada Geese that may weigh up to 5 kilograms (11 pounds). In winter the races might mingle, but Canada Geese mate for life and are faithful to their breeding grounds. The young geese, called goslings stay with their parents throughout their first year of life. Male geese establish the nesting territory and defend it from intruders and predators. The nest is built of grasses, twigs, and reeds, often located along the shoreline. The nest is lined with down from the female's breast. There are usually four to seven eggs which hatch in three to four weeks. The gander stays with the female and helps to protect and raise the young. After hatching it takes from 40 to 85 days for the young to begin flying.

Tips for preventing infections
Can my pets make me sick?
Pets are like family members in many Canadian households, but like all animals, they can carry dangerous organisms. You can come into contact with harmful bacteria, viruses or parasites when you play with and clean up after your pets and pet foods, and when you visit a petting zoo.
  • infection with E. coli salmonellosis toxoplasmosis tuberculosis rabies
These diseases can be especially dangerous for young children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems. If left untreated, they can even be deadly.
How are zoonoses transmitted from animals to humans?

MONTHLY NEWS
April 1999
Zoo Uses the Internet to Find a Bride for a Hippo A zoo in Osaka has posted a message on its Website and has sent e-mail notes to other zoos around the world asking them for help in finding a bride for a male hippopotamus named Tetsuo.
Z ookeepers at Tennoji Zoo in central Osaka had arranged a mate for Tetsuo three times, but each time the attempt fell through. The first try was in March 1998, when the zoo located a 17-month-old female in Puebla, Mexico. The hippo broke her leg, however, and the planned union had to be canceled. Another hippo was then offered, but zoo keepers later discovered it was actually a male.
D iligent efforts by Tennoji Zoo turned up a prospective mate in an eight-month-old at a Canadian zoo. Unfortunately, the "bride-to-be" died in an accident before she could be delivered to Tennoji Zoo.
T etsuo was born to Natsuko and Futoshi, his mother and father, 15 years ago. Futoshi died shortly after Tetsuo's birth, however, and so he was raised by his mother, with whom Tetsuo shared the same cage and pool until last summer. Tetsuo moved out because he's now a fully-grown adult, equivalent in human years to a 30 year old, and ready for marriage.
Z oo attendants are looking for a mate outside Japan because most of the approximately 60 hippos here, including Tetsuo, are descendants of Jukichi and Fukukohippos that were kept at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Nagoyaand are therefore related to one another.
