Canadian zoo critic takes aim at animal suffering in Indonesian zoos
TORONTO, Monday, April 15th, 2002. Canadian zoo critic Rob Laidlaw, a chartered biologist and project manager with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), recently returned from Java where his organization is campaigning to improve animal welfare standards for zoo animals. Reports Laidlaw: "The state of Indonesia's zoos is absolutely appalling. Barren, undersized cages are the norm. We're talking about the kind of menagerie-style, steel bar, and concrete floor enclosures that were common in Western zoos more than 100 years ago but have long since been consigned to the scrap heap of history by progressive zoos. The accommodation is grossly substandard in most cases, and the general level of care is just as bad. There doesn't seem to be any understanding of the biological and behavioural needs of captive animals." WSPA, together with the organization's Indonesian member society Animal Conservation for Life (KSBK), have released their report entitled

BSE border ban hurting Canadian zoos Winnipeg Canada ’s zoos are caught in the middle of the mad cow scare, because the U.S. has not only closed its border to Canadian cattle, but to giraffes and reindeer. Washington ’s ban applies to all ruminants – animals that have hooves and multiple stomachs. “I think to some extent we’re all sort of absorbing the impact of the various bans that have been put into place,” David Banks, of the Calgary Zoo, said. History of The Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums Nutrition Advisory and Research Group (CAZA-NARG) April 2004 In 2001, Deborah A. McWilliams submitted a proposal to the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums Board (CAZA) to develop a nutrition advisory and research group to service Canadian zoological institutions. This proposal was accepted and endorsed by the CAZA Board.
The first call for members attracted twelve professionals from zoological, academic and government institutions from across Canada . CAZA membership now includes nutrition professionals from around the world with an increase in Canadian animal nutrition professional members. In 2002, Dr. Todd Shury ( Calgary Zoo) made a formal presentation of CAZA-NARG and it's proposed services to the October, 2002 CAZA Conference in Calgary , Alberta . The years 2002-2003 saw the implementation and presentation of the results of the first CAZA-NARG research project, development of NARG membership and government guidelines, and the election of the first CAZA-NARG Executive. The results of the first research project, a nutrition services survey, will be used to guide the service formats of CAZA-NARG.
The first election of the CAZA-NARG executive introduced Dr. Michel Delorme (Biodome de Montreal) as the interim Chair of CAZA-NARG. During this time, The Hagen Fund was created through the generosity of Mark Hagen and Hagen Industries. An application for funding for nutrition research from this fund is available on this website.

Evolution of the Magnetic Hill Zoo
In the very early 1950's or even the late 40's, the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources started a small compound west of Moncton at which they housed and cared for the orphaned or injured animals.
In 1954, Mrs Muriel Sikorski wrote a petition to the government to move the rehabilitation compound from its existing location to a spot directly opposite the "Magnetic Hill." Mrs. Sikorski wished to provide an additional attraction at the hill, but it was also done because the original location could not offer security to the animals at all times and had suffered some casualties during hunting season.
The "Game Farm," as it was known at that time, served a primary role as a recreational facility and a secondary role as a rehabilitation facility. This role continued for some years.

      Mr. John Moran
      President
Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums 400 - 280 Metcalfe Street Ottawa, Ontario Dear Mr. Moran: In January 1999, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans commissioned Dr. Jon Lien to conduct a review of the DFO live capture program. He completed his report in April 1999. Since then, the report has received good distribution amongst the scientific community with interest in marine mammals in captivity. In his report, Dr. Lien recommended that standards for educational programs should be established for displaying marine mammals in aquaria. Furthermore, he recommended that the Department establish these standards in conjunction with the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA). It is my intention to release Dr. Lien's report to the public soon. Following Dr. Lien’s recommendation, I would like to request that the CAZA develop a set of national criteria and standards for assessing the educational programs of displaying marine mammals in aquaria. Since Dr. Lien has been instrumental in guiding the department’s policy on marine mammal in captivity, I have asked him to remain actively involved in this process.

    Zoos: Myth and Reality
    By Rob Laidlaw
In recent years, zoos have become the target of intense public scrutiny and criticism. In response, many have tried to repackage themselves as institutions devoted to wildlife conservation, public education and animal welfare. But most zoos fail to live up to their own propaganda and vast numbers of zoo animals continue to endure lives of misery and deprivation.
Nearly every zoo, from the smallest amateur operation to the largest professional facilities, claims to be making important contributions to conservation, usually through participation in endangered species captive propagation initiatives and public education programming. The zoo world buzzword of the moment is "conservation."
Yet, with an estimated 10,000 organized zoos worldwide, representing tens of thousands of human workers and billions of dollars in operating budgets, only a tiny percentage allocate the resources necessary to participate in captive propagation initiatives, and fewer still provide any real support for the in situ protection of wildlife and their natural habitat.
    Humane Treatment
Studies have shown that animals can suffer physically, mentally and emotionally. For this reason, captive environments must be complex enough to compensate for the lack of natural freedom and choice, and they must facilitate expression of natural movement and behavior patterns. This principle has been widely espoused by the modern zoo community in various articles, books and television documentaries.
