We have well over 1,000 members, primarily from Canada, but also from dozens of countries. They include individuals, corporate bodies (small, medium and large), academics, and governments (at all levels). No membership fees / low operating costs The CTA was designed to run without funding. Since our start in 1997, we have not accepted any funding nor membership fees. To "stay afloat", we must manage our association without many of the administrative costs (paper, phone, mailing etc.) faced by most associations. For example, having a shared website (with space donated by InnoVisions Canada), is one way are able to keep costs to a minimum. This shared site focuses almost entirely on content, which is perfect for both organizations who consider that "content is king".

The Matrix Reloaded and a Canadian Technology
The digital media industry is expanding and doing extremely well. At some point, everyone has been impressed with the massive progress of special effects in animation films. It just so happens that XYZ-RGB, a Canadian company based in Ottawa, is a world leader in the field, that is to say, a pioneer in full colour ultrahigh resolution 3D imaging. This technology plays a role in the production of special effects seen in many recent movies. In 2001, XYZ-RGB a group of individuals decided to start XYZ-RGB, which was to become Arius3D's first licensee. The technology licensed by Arius3D is the result of elaborate research performed at the NRCC over a 20 year period and some $15 Million dollars. This laser scanning technology can be applied to various media: film, video, animation, and multimedia design. Museums can become a great beneficiary of this technology, as it is now possible to create interactive exhibitions by scanning a Michelangelo sculpture for example. It is by coincidence that it ended up being used to scan Keanu Reeves! XYZ-RGB was involved in scanning the various actors and exposed body parts for the movie The Matrix Reloaded. The team was approached by ESC Entertainment, an American company specializing in the film's visual effects, at the 2001 Siggraph conference in LA.

National Standards System Success Stories The Modern Mariners' Log - Canadian Technology Onboard Print A decade ago, the Estonia ferry capsized into the Baltic Sea and sank off the Finnish coast, claiming more than 850 lives. Today, all passenger and large cargo ships must carry onboard voyage data recorders (VDRs), which like airline black boxes, can provide essential clues to the cause of an accident.   Canada, and particularly a Newfoundland company, has played a lead role in the development of both VDRs and the international standards that regulate their use. The IMO now requires that IEC 61996 compliant VDRs  be carried by all international passenger ships and ro-ro passenger ships (vessels such as ferries that carry passengers and cargo). The same regulation applies to cargo vessels weighing 3,000 gross tonnes or more and built on or after July 1, 2002. Depending on their weight, cargo ships have until July 1, 2010, to comply with the standards. Dawe says the market for VDRs is just now starting to open up and he adds that it could get even larger, if all countries, including Canada, which regulate vessel traffic in their own waters, had domestic VDR requirements.

Missile Defence Revisited: A Reality Check for Canada (May 2003)
by David Rudd Introduction When the proposal was first debated in early 2001 Canadian reactions ranged from polite skepticism to angry rejectionism. But Washington is pressing ahead with a plan to create a limited defence grid by 2005 - the security of the homeland being of primary concern. Some allied countries are pitching it. The United Kingdom and Denmark are set to approve the enhancement of radars on their territory which would assist in the detection and tracking of rockets in-bound to the North American continent. At the same time, policy-makers in Ottawa have been in no hurry to either endorse or reject Canadian participation. Buoyed by the now muted objections of Russia and China both Prime Minister Jean Chretien and some of his likely successors have been more open to the prospect of allowing the bi-national North American Aerospace Defence (NORAD) command to expand its mandate from one of missile detection to missile defence. But Ottawa is not ready to commit even though it knows that Washington does not require Canadian money, technology or territory in order to put its plan into action.

Canadian start-ups moving south of border in search of cash, staff Friday, April 21, 2000 By JOHN COOK
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER Eric Woodward , founder of Bellevue Internet start-up My.com , could very well be the poster child for a national crisis sweeping through Canada. A computer whiz who by the age of 27 has already created five high-tech companies, Woodward is part of what many in Canada are calling the high-tech brain drain. Woodward, a native of Vancouver, B.C., is exactly the type of person that Canada hates to lose. One of his first companies Internet Direct grew into Western Canada's largest Internet Service Provider. Another company by the name of Mail.com
