September 28th to October 2nd, 2005 For five days, from September 28th to October 2nd, 2005, the Westerner Exhibition in Red Deer, Alberta, will host the Canadian Supreme - the most prestigious Cutting/Reining/Working Cow Horse show in Canada. 2004 Show Purse The goal of the Canadian Supreme is to preserve and promote the useful training traditions of the western horseman. The performance-oriented enthusiast of the California-style does not necessarily look to any particular breed of horse but rather for the animals with cow "savvy" and, at the same time, one that responds to the demands of the rider. ACTION ALERT
Currently numbering about 1,800 animals in 13 populations, these caribou are indicative of the ecosystem health of these mountains. For six to eight months annually, over winter, they feed almost exclusively on arboreal (tree-hanging) lichen which thrives in maturing and old-growth forest. In fact, mountain caribou populations appear stable where at least 40 per cent of their range contains forest older than 140 years, while the most productive populations have at least 73 per cent of their range in forests that age or older.
As of 2002, none of the populations were increasing, and six were decreasing. One population, down to five animals in 1999, may have disappeared entirely by 2004. And, by then, the southeastern/east-central populations as a whole had declined by 17 per cent compared to 1996 numbers. Threats to mountain caribou start with diminishing old growth in the wake of modern forestry. And, as older trees are cut, new growth is favoured by deer and moose, which in turn attract predators that add pressure on a diminishing number of caribou. The third pressure is from motorized backcountry recreation. (Further in Almanac, the BC Federation of Naturalists alerts to a potential heli-skiing threat to the single most viable population of mountain caribou.) All mountain caribou, plus other forest-dwelling

  • This handbook provides a bibliography of research pertaining to reptiles and amphibians of British Columbia, including the Pacific Northwest. The objective was to locate sources, and extract relevant information, for people interested in Pacific Northwest herpetology, whether professionals or amateurs. Source that would be useful to conservationists, habitat protection biologists, land planners and wildlife managers were considered. Each entry is cross-referenced by species, geographic area, and author.

  • This publication is a comprehensive handbook of Canadian herpetology. It is a readable and authoritative guide, providing identification and distribution maps as well as some general information on natural history. It falls between the necessarily more condensed information on Canadian amphibians and reptiles distributed by the Interpretation and Extension Division of the national Museum of Natural Sciences, and the comprehensive, more technical monograph now in preparation, which will emphasize and summarize original research on Canadian amphibians and reptiles. It is not intended as a replacement for guides of individual provinces.
