Full Version for Printing TOWARD WOMEN'S EQUALITY : CANADA'S FAILED COMMITMENT MAJOR INEQUALITY ISSUES c. Impact of the Budget Implementation Act and Provincial Restructuring of Social Programs In general, in response to the federal cuts, provincial governments have chosen to cut or reduce funding to programs which benefit the most socially and economically vulnerable, a group, as we have already noted, that is disproportionately female in its composition. The particularly harsh impact on Canadian women of the restructuring and cutback of federal and provincial programs is starkly evident in relation to a number of specific circumstances. (i) Increase in Women's Unpaid Responsibilities Cuts to social services of the kind traditionally funded under CAP negatively affect women both because they are services that low-income women need, and because, when these services are cut, women become the "shock absorbers" in their families, relied upon to fill the gaps with unpaid care-giving. Cuts in services thus mean that women's unpaid responsibilities increase. As a result, these cuts affect women more than men, in more ways

Fact Sheet #6
Gardening with Native Plants:
General Introduction
Go for Green - The Active Living and Environment Program, encourages outdoor physical activity that protects, enhances or restores the environment. When we Go for Green, we improve our own health, through active living and the health of the planet, by being good environmental citizens. Gardening is active living. Is it the second most popular physical activity in Canada, it offers the opportunity for lifelong participation, and can be a positive contributor to the natural environment. One of the most positive gardening trends over the last few yearsalong with the growing commitment of gardeners to organic practiceshas been the increased interest in native plant gardening. People across Canada are looking to the natural landscapes of woodlands, meadows, prairies and wetlands for inspiration in their gardens, recreating back and front yard habitats that are based on models found in nature. The environmental reasons for gardening with native plants are positive and compelling. Native plant gardens:

Looking back over the Society's activities and achievements between 1979 and the present, it is obvious Volunteer BC's mission has remained the same. Volunteer BC's main function has been to encourage and promote volunteerism and the development of the voluntary sector in BC These goals have been met in a variety of different ways - the education of local and provincial governments, promoting quality volunteer programs and services in volunteer centres and non-profit organizations and advocating the value of volunteerism in Canadian society. Throughout its history Volunteer BC has actively participated in or directly facilitated needs surveys, Volunteer Week celebrations, volunteer recognition item marketing, identification of relevant issues and data collection. Volunteer BC has published a quarterly newsletter and hosted annual conferences, both of which have been well received. The health of Volunteer BC has benefited from periodic grants and other funding that has enabled the hiring of office coordination staff. Securing sustainable funding continues to this day to be an elusive challenge for Volunteer BC and indeed its members.
