Jan. 29 Here is what some globeandmail.com visitors had to say about who their favorite prime minister is and why. You can find links to other responses at the bottom. To add your opinion, go to our submissions page. Mellissa Hughes Although I think that Sir John Macdonald should be honoured on the inaugural Prime Minister's day as he was the first Prime Minister of Canada and because of his long, dedicated service to our country, my favourite Prime Minister is Mr. Pierre Trudeau. He essentially put Canada "on the map". He was a great statesman, who had charisma and who was flamboyant and unforgettable! All the world knew of him, loved him (or hated him!) with a passion, admired him and followed his every move. He was a fantastic leader, both nationally and internationally. Some may disagree with this, but that shows that even Mr. Trudeau was only human! On the whole, I think that Mr. Trudeau was a very capable and successful Prime Minister who "did Canada proud"! (I am re-submitting this again as my first attempt at it suddenly disappeared from the screen!).

I've really been looking forward to this meeting because I view it as a meeting between friends and allies. I really appreciate the Prime Minister's clear vision about the world in which we live. He understands the danger of terror. He understands the opportunity of trade. And he understands that we share values that will that are so important, the values of freedom, human dignity. We care about the human condition. I appreciate your concern about working together to help heal those who hurt, provide medicines for those who suffer from a disease. We've got a good friend in Canada. It's an important relationship; it's a crucial relationship; and it's one that I look forward to continuing to nurture with this Prime Minister.

Martin: An intense rival of Chretien Paul Martin has formally taken office as Canada's 21st prime minister, promising sweeping changes.
He replaces Jean Chretien, the longest serving leader of the major industrialised countries. Mr Chretien agreed to step down after 10 years in office, with two years left of his term. His government is credited with tackling chronic budget deficits and defeating separatist forces in French-speaking Quebec. Under Mr Chretien's premiership, his Liberal Party also initiated controversial new laws - allowing same-sex marriages, and decriminalising the possession of small amounts of marijuana. 'Fresh start' Mr Martin and his new team of ministers were sworn in on Friday. Chretien was at odds with the US "I look forward to the opportunity to rally Canadians toward a new sense of national purpose and around a new agenda of change and achievement," Mr Martin said. "We are going to change the way things work in Ottawa in order to re-engage Canadians in the political process."

MULRONEY: We were alone except for the security details. President Reagan's visit had been important, demanding and successful. Our discussions reflected the international agenda of the times: the nuclear threat posed by the Soviet Union and the missile deployment by NATO, pressures in the Warsaw Pact, challenges resulting from the Berlin Wall and the ongoing separation of Germany, and bilateral and hemispheric free trade. President Reagan had spoken to Parliament, handled complex files with skill and good humor, strongly impressing his Canadian hosts. And here we were waiting for our wives.

Prime Ministers of Canada There are about ten million sites on the net that could give you a list of all the Prime Ministers of Canada. However, the unique nature of the office merits a more comprehensive chart. Non-Canadians hear about how we had a female Prime Minister, and think how lovely and progressive Canada must be to allow for such a thing. Unfortunately, Kim Campbell, along with many other Prime Ministers, were never popularly elected, and simply assumed the office of Prime Minister following the resignation of a sitting PM. They were appointed by the governing party, and not elected by the people. In this chart, I use the term "interim" to designate Prime Ministers who were never elected to office by the Canadian people, and simply held their position by virtue of party appointment. Once they win an election, they cease to be interim, although sometimes that never happened. Blue signifies the "Conservative Party" (in whatever form the party was taking at the time) and red signifies the Liberal Party, obviously. The dark colors are used to signify Prime Ministers who were elected to their office. Name: Term: Time in office: Elections won: Left office: John A. MacDonald

Canadian Prime Minister Announces New Initiatives in Response to Asian Crisis
including Indonesia
January 3, 2005
Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin announced late yesterday evening, new federal government response measures to the tragic earthquakes and tsunamis which struck South and South-East Asia on December 26, 2004. "This tragedy is beyond measure, beyond comprehension," said Prime Minister Martin. "All Canadians are heartbroken by the devastation. Sheila joins me in expressing our deepest sympathies on behalf of all Canadians to the families involved. This crisis has touched the global conscience; it has evoked a global response. "Today, we are continuing Canada's commitment to recovery and reconstruction and renewing our pledge to help those most in need with the following measures:
  • Effective immediately, Canada is doubling its financial contribution from at least $40 million to $80 million , making Canada among the top financial contributors world wide. These monies will continue to go to direct relief of suffering, recovery efforts and longer-term reconstruction; To encourage even further giving, the Government will allow Canadians to claim contributions made up until January 11th, on their 2004 tax return, should they wish, for the purposes of claiming charitable tax deductions;

Former Canadian prime minister touts leadership roles for women

Former Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell told a dining room full of influential women at the Duquesne Club yesterday about the power of "old-girl" networking at the international level, as a new Regional Women's Initiative was announced to promote women leaders locally in politics, business and the nonprofit sector.
Pam Panchak, Post-Gazette
Kim Campbell, president of the International Women's Forum and former prime minister of Canada, greets attendees at a luncheon at the Duquense Club, Downtown, yesterday. Campbell, introduced by philanthropist and Republican power-broker Elsie Hillman, headlined the first public event by the Western Pennsylvania chapter of the International Women's Forum, of which Campbell is international president. She talked about "leading after leaving" and described the importance of using leadership skills honed on the way up to high office after leaving the job. It is a topic Campbell knows well, having risen in Canadian politics to occupy three Cabinet posts, including minister of defense and of justice, before serving as prime minister for only a few months in 1993. Shortly after she was elected leader of the Progressive Conservative Party, she lost her seat and the party lost its parliamentary majority.

416-934-0606 Fax 416-934-3452 January 18, 2005. The Rt. Hon. Mr. Paul Martin, P.C., M.P., Prime Minister of Canada, House of Commons, Parliament Buildings, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0A6. Dear Prime Minister, I understand the difficulty in which recent decisions of various Courts of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada have left the Government of Canada regarding the traditional opposite-sex definition of marriage. Parliament is about to consider legislation to redefine marriage as a lawful union of two persons to the exclusion of all others, thus paving the way for same-sex marriages. So far the debate has been among lawyers. It is time for there to be a debate in Canadian society as a whole. It is time for ordinary Canadians to be given a sufficient opportunity to discuss the issues and to reflect on the deeper implications before a debate occurs in Parliament and a decision is made that could irrevocably change the nature of marriage and the family in Canada.

Home MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE WORKING VISIT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA, JEAN CHRÉTIEN, TO SOUTH AFRICA, 6 TO 8 APRIL 2002 The Prime Minister of Canada, Jean Chrétien, will pay a working visit to South Africa in his capacity as the current Chairperson of the G8 industrialised nations at the invitation of President Thabo Mbeki. The Prime Minister, accompanied by his wife, Mrs Aline Chrétien, will arrive in South Africa on Saturday, 6 April, and depart on Monday, 8 April. Prime Minister Chrétien will hold discussions with President Mbeki on the G8's response to the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD). In this regard, issues to be addressed at the meeting between President Mbeki and Prime Minister Chrétien include the improvement of access for African products to world markets, the attraction of foreign direct investment and the promotion of investment in key social sectors in Africa, particularly health and education. President Mbeki will also brief Prime Minister Chrétien of developments relating to the transformation of the OAU to the African Union and NEPAD. At the G8 Summit held in Genoa, Italy, last year, the industrialised countries welcomed NEPAD as an initiative that would provide the basis for a new and intensive partnership between Africa and the developed world.
