Joseph Philippe Pierre Yves Elliott Trudeau (October 18, 1919—September 28, 2000) was the fifteenth Prime Minister of Canada from April 20, 1968, to June 3, 1979, and from March 3, 1980, to June 30, 1984. Born in Montreal, Quebec, Pierre Trudeau was a flamboyant and charismatic intellectual. He attended Harvard University and the London School of Economics. A clever (some would say "cunning") politician, he led Canada through some of its most tumultuous times. He was often controversial.

    Introduction
The status of the prime minister has been described as primus inter pares : Latin for "first among equals." This concept defines not only the prime minister's relationship with Cabinet, but also, in a sense, his or her relationship with the public in our modern democratic society. Drawing on a wide variety of documents and artifacts, this site explores five main themes (see the menu at left) relating to Canada's prime ministers. The site examines our leaders' political careers as well as their private lives. It also sheds light on Canadians' perceptions of our prime ministers. From Macdonald to Martin, our political leaders are twenty-one individuals who have made a difference, shaping Canada's identity, sometimes in profound ways.

He led the country through the greatest war ever fought up to his time, got the support of his political enemies to weather the crisis of war and conscription, and helped to achieve Canada's acceptance as an important and independent unit in the British family. Sir Robert performed many services for his own country and others in significant international conferences, and led a delegation as a Canadian plenipotentiary at the Versailles Peace Conference. He was decorated not only by his sovereign but by the governments of France and Belgium and was laden with academic honours from world-famed universities.

Recollections of Canadian Parliamentarians Prime Ministers How little linkage existed between Canada and Ireland in the middle part of the twentieth century may be garnered from my own knowledge of Canada, largely formed on Hollywood portrayals-Nelson Eddy and Jeanette Macdonald in " The Northwest Mounted Police ", singing " Rose Marie " and " Ten Stout Hearted Men ". Despite the fact that I occasionally handled foreign news when subbing in " The Irish Press ", a Dublin daily newspaper, items emanating from Canada were extremely rare, so rare that when I decided to come to Canada I wasn't quite sure whether Diefenbaker was the Prime Minister of Canada or South Africa. I learned more about Canada on my first flight by Trans-Canada Airlines from Shannon to Montreal than I had ever known previously, thanks to a special insert in one of the English dailies and conversation with my seat companion, a gentleman named Lambert, a representative of the Moore's Business Forms company. The insert dealt mainly with a recent wheat deal reached between Canada and China, and the role played in negotiating it by a Canadian government minister, one Alvin Hamilton.

Remarks by Brian Mulroney in eulogy for President Reagan President Ronald Wilson Reagan's memorial service at the National Cathedral, Washington, D.C. In the spring of 1987, President Reagan and I were driven into a large hangar at the Ottawa airport to await the arrival of Mrs Reagan and my wife Mila prior to departure ceremonies for their return to Washington. We were alone except for the security details. President Reagan's visit had been important, demanding and successful. Our discussions reflected the international agenda of the times: the nuclear threat posed by the Soviet Union and the missile deployment by Nato, pressures in the Warsaw Pact, challenges resulting from the Berlin Wall and the ongoing separation of Germany, and bilateral and hemispheric free trade. President Reagan had spoken to Parliament, handled complex files with skill and good humour, strongly impressing his Canadian hosts. And here we were waiting for our wives.

Short Publications Canada's Unhappy Birthday Canada's Unhappy Birthday Print Mail By David Frum Posted: Tuesday, June 28, 2005 ARTICLES National Post (Canada) Publication Date: June 28, 2005 What a grim and troubling anniversary this coming July 1 will be. Canada's national day does not celebrate a declaration of independence (like America's July 4), or a revolutionary upheaval (like France's Bastille Day) or a moment of national redemption (like Mexico's Cinco de Mayo). July 1, 1867, was the day the British North America Act came into effect. In other words, Canada Day commemorates the creation of a system of government. That system of government is failingand the failure is making Canadians poorer, less free and less secure. The Canadian federal government created by the British North America Act has evolved into the least representative and least accountable national government in the advanced democratic world. Unlike the presidents of France and the United States, Canada's chief executive is not elected by the people at large.

MACDONALD TUPPER BENNETT CLARK ... MARTIN PRIME MINISTERS Four prime ministers - L to R: Trudeau, Turner, Chretien, and then ( 1967) Prime Minister Lester Pearson Feb. 2002: Pierre Trudeau was the top pick as the greatest Canadian of the 20th Century, a new national public opinion survey suggests. In second place was Terry Fox, the inspirational hero who tried to walk across Canada after losing a leg to cancer, while hockey great Wayne Gretzky was the top choice of living Canadians. The poll, conducted by Ekos Research Associates, asked more than 3,000 Canadians to name their choice for top honours. Trudeau was the resounding favourite at 32 per cent, with Fox coming a distant second at six per cent and Gretzky placing third with four per cent. Fourth-place honours were shared by former prime minister Lester B. Pearson, who is viewed as the father of Canadian peacekeeping, and Rene Levesque, who led the separatist Parti Quebecois to its first electoral victory. Both men were named by three per cent of respondents. Former prime ministers William Mackenzie King, Wilfrid Laurier, John Diefenbaker and Brian Mulroney were also named in the survey, but received less than two per cent of the votes.

The Prime Minister may be any Canadian citizen of voting age (18 years). It is customary for the prime minister to also be a sitting member of the House of Commons and able to speak French and English , although two Prime Ministers have governed from the Senate, Sir John Joseph Caldwell Abbott Mackenzie Bowell . If the prime minister should fail to win his or her seat, a junior MP in a safe seat would typically resign to permit a by-election to elect that leader to a seat. However, if the leader of the governing party is changed shortly before an election is due and the new leader is not a Member of Parliament, he or she will normally await the general election before running for a seat. For example, John Turner was briefly Prime Minister in without being a member of the House of Commons; he would ironically win his seat in the general election that swept him from power. The official residence of the Prime Minister is
