Canadian Gay Marriage Bill Goes To Parliament Today - 365gay.com
And it is expected to pass. Good for them. Maybe Canadians are ready for gay marriage. Americans don't seem to be, or are offended and outraged that the court system was used to circumvent the legislative process in this country.

Member of Canadian Parliament speaks on Canada-U.S. relations, Friday
The Hon. Art Eggleton, a member of the Parliament of Canada, will visit Cornell Friday, Nov. 22, to give a talk on "Canada-U.S. Relations in the Post-9/11 Era." The lecture, which is free and open to the community, will be in the Hollis E. Cornell Auditorium of Goldwin Smith Hall, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Eggleton served as Canada's minister of national defence from June 1997 to May 2002. He previously held the positions of president of the Treasury Board and minister responsible for infrastructure, 1993 to 1996, and of minister of international trade from January 1996 to June 1997. Before entering federal politics, Eggleton was the mayor of Toronto for 11 years, the longest-serving mayor in the city's history. Within the context that Canada is the United States' largest trading partner and the two countries share the world's longest undefended border, Eggleton will speak both about bilateral issues and major international political, security and legal concerns of the two countries. Eggleton's talk is hosted by the Canadians at Cornell Club (CACC), which, with more than 225 members, may be the largest Canadian student association in the Ivy League. Daniel Braun '04, president of the CACC, said that Eggleton, who as a cabinet member has been at the center of Canadian federal political decision-making for most of the past decade, is an ideal person to speak to the Cornell community about these vital bilateral and international issues.

The bill was supported by 158 lawmakers in the 308-seat House of Commons, with 133 MPs voting against. It is expected to win Senate approval and become law by July, making Canada the third country after the Netherlands and Belgium to allow gay marriages. Gay marriage is already legal in eight of 10 provinces and one of Canada's three territories. The Canadian House of Commons has voted overwhelmingly in support of the Kyoto Protocol on cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The 195-77 vote was non-binding, but Prime Minister Jean Chretien had already signalled his intention to ratify the agreement by the end of the year if it was approved by parliament. It's really excellent, a good indication of the wishes of the country and the Canadian people
Environment Minister David Anderson
The vote came despite opposition from several of Canada's more powerful provinces, who fear the treaty could harm the country's economy - and followed days of delay tactics by the official opposition party, the Canadian Alliance. Canada's decision is in stark contrast to the position of the neighbouring United States, where President George W Bush has rejected the accord.

April 3, 2005 Canadian Parliament Set to Broaden Hepatitis C Compensation The Canadian Parliament is expected to vote in favor of extending government compensation to all individuals who contracted hepatitis C from contaminated blood and blood-derived products. Current compensation, which is drawn from a government trust fund totaling $1.1 billion, is available only to those infected with hepatitis C in the years 1986-1990, a period when a screening test was available but not utilized. Those infected before and after those years, approximately half of the total number of victims, have thus far been excluded. This group numbers under 5,000 individuals. Lawyers involved in prior class action lawsuits and subsequent settlement, represent the 1986-1990 claimants. They oversee the trust fund with the court and are opposed to extending compensation to any additional individuals. Source: The Canadian Press, April 3, 2005

Assisting Committees in the Canadian Parliament
Hugh A. Finsten, Director General,Library of Parliament, Ottawa, Canada
PAPER
Research Branch Assistance to Committees Committee work represents a significant portion of the overall workload undertaken by the Research Branch. Approximately 40 percent of the time worked by its 60 professional staff is related to assisting committees. The Branch currently assists 32 standing committees plus 12 subcommittees of the two Houses, as well as special committees. Only a few committees in the two Houses are not assisted. Officers serve committees either individually or in multidisciplinary teams of two or three, and may also collaborate with consultants engaged by a committee. The chair is elected by the committee and therefore has the responsibility for directing the staff. It is an informal arrangement; staff continues to handle other Branch assignments (for individual members, associations, publications) while assisting committees. Staff responds to individual information requests from all members of the committee; anything more substantial would have to be approved by the chair or could be handled by another officer not attached to the particular committee. If any research request could lead to a conflict between the staff's role in assisting the committee as a whole and its assistance to an individual member of the committee, the committee chair would have to authorize the research; or another officer in the Branch, not assisting the particular committee, could undertake it. Staff has to develop a good working relationship with the committee chair while retaining credibility with all committee members.

Ministers are saying that they need to preserve the right to call a sin a sin, just as the Bible calls sin by its proper name - SIN. This got me to thinking that perhaps we need to consult a list of other sins in the Bible, just to make sure that no laws might pass that might prevent the full reading of the Bible, and the full application of its laws on sinful conduct. It also occured to me that perhaps it would be equally important to make note of what the Bible says is not a sin, and thus acceptable conduct and something you can encourage people to do, backing it all up with quotes from the Bible just to prove that, yes, you can do those things with impunity, just as one can outlaw sins based on the fact that selective bible quotes support the case.
Leviticus 18, 19, and 20 lists all the sexual offenses, but there is one way to have a sexual encounter and escape the death penalty, and that is to sleep with slave girls.
Levitcus 19:20 "If a man has sex with a slave girl he is not to be punished. She is a slave."

http://www.privacyinternational.org/issues/idcard/pi-can-submission-10-03.htm
PRIVACY INTERNATIONAL National Identity Cards October 4, 2003 th 2003 in London, UK.
Executive summary
Privacy International urges the Committee to approach the issue of identity cards with great caution. Many of the claims made for the technology behind card systems cannot be sustained. The justification advanced for the card may in some cases be well intentioned, but appears to be based more on emotion and rhetoric rather than credible research. The biometric system that is proposed to form the identifier base for the card has not been successfully trailed anywhere in the world. Research evidence suggests that many of the claims made by the biometrics industry are false. Indeed the "one to many" biometrics architectures envisioned by some proponents of the Canadian scheme are entire fraudulent. The cost of the ID card system, together with appropriate registration procedures, IT infrastructure, private and public sector compliance and parallel systems will be well in excess of informal estimates currently circulating. Based on UK, European and South East Asian costings we estimate that a Canadian system at the point of full implementation will cost $7 billion (Canadian). The privacy threats arising from a national ID system cannot be overstated. An ID card in the Canadian environment will in all likelihood breach the Charter on Rights and Freedoms. A card will fundamentally violate the privacy and data protection principles enshrined in Canadian law.

(On the persecution towards Falun Gong and its practitioners in China, a letter to Chinese Leader Jiang Zemin was read in Paliament by Rob Anders, M.P. in Canada on November 16, 1999. The letter is as follows.)
His Excellency Jiang Zemin
President of the People's Republic of China
Beijing, People's Republic of China
Dear Mr. President,
As members of the Canadian Parliament and Senate, we are writing to express our concern over the Chinese government's attempts to eradicate the practice of Falun Gong, the inhuman treatment of detaind or arrested practitioners, and the deaths of several practitioners while in police custody.
From what we have observed in Canada, Falun Gong is a health-promoting and peaceful group. Therefore, we are distressed by reports from citizens of China and Amnesty International of mass arrests, arbitrary detention, torture, beatings, and inhuman treatment of Falun Gong practitioners in China and especially the deaths of several practitioners while in police custody. We call on the Chinese government to immediately stop this brutal persecution and to allow the people of China to peacefully practice their beliefs without fear of harassment or arrest.
We expect that China will uphold the fundamental human rights specified in the Chinese constitution. Furthermore, we expect the Chinese government to respect the freedom of belief, freedom of expression, and freedom of assembly that they agreed to uphold as dignatories to the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Hon. Consiglio Di Nino: Honourable senators, last year on this day, we had
the pleasure of welcoming His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Ottawa. His visit
to Canada reminded us that in today's world, filled as it is with violence
and age-old hatreds, there is another world, and that is the commitment to
achieve peace through dialogue rather than conflict. His visit also reminded
us of the grim situation in Tibet, a homeland he has not seen in almost five
decades. Honourable senators, I once again urge our government to do all it can to support the efforts of His Holiness to reach an accommodation with the Chinese that respects the fundamental rights of Tibetans. I believe we have both an opportunity and an obligation to speak in support of the Dalai Lama's quest for a just and lasting solution to this long-standing issue. On February 4, 1999, The Islet Foundation had a chance to present its case in favour of xenotransplantation to the Standing Committee on Health in the Canadian House of Commons in Ottawa. The committee consists of select members of parliament who have been charged with improving the organ and tissue transplantation system in Canada. TIF had an opportunity to make its case for a timely completion of xenotransplantation guidelines, and to demand that only science and consistent ethical principles should be part of the process. Several of the Members of Parliament within the committee raised the issue of xenotransplantation even before the TIF presentation. In every case, xenotransplantation was discussed in a positive light as a potential contributor to solving the organ supply problem. After the presentation, the members asked excellent questions, and were generally unsympathetic to the rhetorical and unscientific attacks on xenotransplantation carried out by its various opponents. Both the speech and the accompanying brief are presented below.
