Odds 'n' Ends
Well, I've had a few strange things happen lately. First, Chae Young and I were on the subway when we got off at Dongdaemun Stadium the other day. The first thing we saw was two small schoolboys, one of whom was a bit bigger than the other, fighting on the platform. A crowd gathered, and an older gentleman pulled them apart. A younger man held one boy, and someone else held another. The boys did not appear to have parents around. Soon they started going at it again, and both were cursing and the smaller one was crying. He had blood on his neck.
Two obviously gay Korean young men found me very attractive yesterday, and took a picture of me in the subway. I think they would have taken a few more, but I was a bit shy, so I covered my face with my book. Although many Korean young men are physically affectionate with each other, these two really took the cake, and furthermore they were obviously flirting with me. I'm glad someone finds me attractive, I guess! Of course, there's the ever present "you're handsome" from the ladies, but I wonder if they're just being polite, or if they think all white people are attractive because we "look like movie stars." Then again, I think most Korean women are very beautiful, so I guess it works both ways.

Odds 'n' Ends
There's a rooster in my neighborhood. I saw a cat chase him several weeks ago, and both cat and rooster are still around. I live nowhere near a farm, so the presence of this rooster in a heavily populated residential area is kind of funny.
Anyway, I'm going to try to keep posting more often using the time when my significant other is watching TV. posted by Nathan at 1:36 AM

    http://www.alternativaonline.ca/odds and ends0311.html
For Charles W. Fox, the most traumatic experience of the war was surviving it. A Second World War veteran, Charley, as he likes to be called, leans forward in his seat as he describes, with striking lucidity, the moment that made his survival so painful.
After the war, on a regular day at work at Walker's Department Store in Guelph, Ontario, a woman Fox knew well walked in. Out of nowhere, she lunged forward, grabbed him and shook him. Her words, loaded with anguish, fell upon him like stones. "Why my Andy and not you?" she asked. "Why my Andy and not you?"
Her husband had died in the war. Fox had survived. Choked by guilt for many years, Fox could not speak about the war. "A lot of vets don't talk about their war experiences because they saw their friends blow apart in front of them," he says.
Fox is now filling that long silence. He has countless stories that have not been told, many about those who have perished. He wants to honour them in a book called Untold Stories, Unsung Heroes, due for publication next spring. Fox has also filmed a documentary expected to broadcast on the History Channel.
Rommel Under Attack Fox says he wants to convey to audiences the sense of brotherhood that developed among fellow pilots during the war. While in the Air Force, Fox worked first as a flight instructor, and then as a ground attack expert, launching air strikes on key targets on the ground. Every moment spent with the other pilots was precious. The jokes they shared seemed funnier. Together, they all laughed louder. When one of them died, the others coped by remembering the times they spent together.

Investigating a farmer's complaint that someone had stolen his livestock, puzzled police on the Caribbean island of Trinidad uncovered a collection of well-dressed animals. Police gave chase in Chaguanas in central Trinidad after spotting a rental vehicle with its headlights off. The driver abandoned the vehicle, and officers found a sheep in a dress, a goat in a shirt, pants and hat, and two more goats also in shirts and pants in the trunk. Police believe the thief had dressed the animals to fool people into thinking they were humans.
Dateline: Rhode Island The son of famed American-basher Nikita Khrushchev has applied to become an American citizen. Sergei Khrushchev, son of the late Soviet leader, has been teaching International Studies at Brown University in Providence, R.I., for several years. The 63-year-old scholar and his wife are scheduled to take a written test at the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service offices in Providence on June 23. "It is not so special or a political decision any longer," Sergei Khrushchev told reporters. At the height of the Cold War, the incendiary senior Khrushchev warned the United States, "We will bury you" and boasted that his country's rockets could hit a fly over the United States.
Dateline: New Jersey A firefighter was forced to give up his four Bruce Springsteen tickets after using his uniform to cut to the front of the line. Tickets for a series of concerts in The Boss' home state went on sale last week and have sold out quickly. Fans were alarmed, then, when a firetruck pulled up outside a Ticketmaster location in Newark, N.J., and disgorged several firefighters. Concerned ticket hopefuls asked what was going on and were informed that the firefighters needed to perform a fire inspection. While inside, one of the firefighters apparently purchased a block of four concert tickets. Angry fans complained, and the firefighter had his Springsteen privileges revoked.

The number of U.S. citizens visiting Canada's main immigration Web site increased six-fold after George W. Bush's successful bid for re-election. On an average day, 20,000 people in the US log onto the Web site, but on Nov. 3 the figure shot up to 115,016 and has since settled down to 65,803 - a number still well above the average. Would-be immigrants to Canada can apply to become permanent resident, which takes a year, or find job, which requires a work permit. Another option is to marry a Canadian, which shortens the wait time for citizenry - an idea that spawned the Web site www.marryanamerican.ca, an online service where Americans looking to leave the states can meet willing Canadian partners.

ODDS AND ENDS In the process of rolling up and shaping our Softlite ionomer foam products, we have an occasional supply of end-cuts, cut-offs, or drops of various sizes and colors and shapes. We also occasionally have production over-runs. With our newly installed recycling equipment, we can reprocess this material ourselves, but if call at the right time or can be patient, we often have by-products available. As shown above, our byproducts typically take two forms: end cuts from cylinders-predominantly buoys and large fenders-shown above left and back-cuts from fender railings such as we make for the USCG and Canadian CG 47 foot motor lifeboats or the Boston Whaler Impact series (see Integral Boat Fenders page for illustrations). The former can be an inexpensive source of buoyancy or they make good back stops for archery targets; the latter pieces make excellent dock fendering. The end-cuts vary from two to four feet (2' - 4') in diameter and two to four (2" - 4") inches thick with a one-and-a-half inch to four inch (1.5" - 4") hole in the center. One side will be flat from the cut and the other uneven from the roll-up. We sell these pieces in available sizes and colors for $0.50 a pound of buoyancy. Minimum order is $100.00. Back-cut pieces are Type M and Type W. Type M pieces (shown above center) are 3" thick and 7" tall in eight pound per cubic foot density black only, 53" long; $25.00 each. Type W pieces are 2" thick hollow cylinder sections, 6" stand off by 15" tall in five pound per cubic foot density, gray and some other colors on occasion, 53" long; $40.00 each. Minimum order is $100.00.

The plaque includes 4,5,6,17, and 38th Field Regiments, 28 Heavy AA Regt, 14 and 29th Light AA Regt, 7 Anti Tank Regt and 33rd Heavy Regt. The address by the Col Comdt, Brig Ray Andrews, was well received and there were refreshments afterwards at HMS Olphert. Following this, Lindsay joined the Old Comrades Association for Gunners' Day lunch at the Hutt RSA where many old acquantances were renewed. A legendary folklore hero of the lumber camps of the American Northwest, with enormous strength and cunning. The stories have Paul Bunyon and his giant blue ox, called Babe, creating the most significant or even the North American continent such as the Grand Canyon. There are many theories to explain the origin of the tales, including:
    • From French-Canadian sources.
    • From European sources.
    • Created by a logging company early in the twentieth century.
The earliest known publication of some Paul Bunyon tales was in a newspaper in 1910. There is a suitably huge statue of Paul Bunyon and Babe in the redwood forests of northern California, I think possibly alongside the Avenue of the Giants

    posted: 07:00 am ET
12 March 2001 When the Mir space station makes its fiery plunge to Earth in the coming days, more than 130 tons of space junk will reenter Earth's atmosphere. About one-third of the complex is expected to survive and crash somewhere in the south Pacific Ocean. Most of the focus, of course, has been placed on the station's seven modules. Inside each is the legacy of 15 years of spaceflight old computers, spent experiments, the crews' personal effects, even garbage bags filled with refuse. Given the circumstances of Mir's deorbit, there was little opportunity for Russia to retrieve some of the more choice items left aboard the outpost. Some truly unique one could even say "weird" items will ride down with Mir. Here are some of those cosmic odds and ends. Plan 409 from Outer Space Fungus damaged this communications device on Mir On one of the latter Mir flights, cosmonauts noticed a mysterious film growing on the station's glass portholes. Further investigation revealed the foggy window was coated with living fungus. Though the discovery might have simply signaled the need for a space-based cleaning service, these germs posed a much greater threat. They were eating through the window.

Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 ... Assorted Pictures For a few days in August 1999, I visited Toronto, Ontario, Canada with my mother. We left on August 7, and returned on August 10. While there, I got to meet my friend Sarah Lanthier and her family in person for the first time (we met through the 'net), as well as see the department store that I had known since my youth through Today's Special, as well as go as high up as I have ever been, while still standing on something attached to the ground. All in all, it was a fun experience, and something that I would do again if I had the money. On August 7, a Saturday, as usually happens on a day I have to get up early at home, Mom woke me up (Dad sometimes does the honors, too, but on this day it was Mom). I got up, ate some cereal for breakfast, took my shower, and brought my stuff down to the car to load in to go to Canada. We took the Previa (pictured at right), and after hugs from Dad and Sis, we were on our way to Charlottesville, to sit and wait. The trip over was pretty usual for going to Charlottesville. Interstate, 29 bypass, 29 through Charlottesville, and then out to the airport.
