Talk about the armed forces today, and most people will mention such places as Bosnia, Haiti or Somalia. While Canada's military has taken part in such high-profile missions, many more Canadians in uniform are serving in their own country.
Today there are more than 20 Canadian armed forces bases across Canada used for recruiting, training and mobilizing the more than 50,000 men and women presently serving in the army, navy and air force.
A small army by modern standards, Canada's armed forces nevertheless maintain combat readiness for war, peacekeeping duties and domestic unrest (as in the 1970 October Crisis and the more recent Oka incident in 1990). Source: Canadian War Museum

The Snowbirds are celebrating their 35th Anniversary this year and to date have flown for over 116 million spectators across North America. All members of the Snowbirds are Canadian Forces personnel who have accumulated years of military experience prior to joining the squadron. Each year, military pilots and technicians who aspire to be in the squadron apply for a position with the Snowbirds. They are selected based on skill and experience. Additionally, pilots undergo a rigorous series of try-outs to evaluate their formation-flying proficiency. The Snowbirds are dedicating their 35th Season to Captain Miles Selby who lost his life in an accident on Dec. 10, 2004. In 2005, as a tribute to him, the Snowbirds will continue their tradition of excellence in order to fulfill their role as Canadian ambassadors in demonstrating to the North American public the skill, professionalism and teamwork of the men and women of the Canadian Forces.

Canada to establish permanent military base in Persian Gulf region
By David Adelaide 2 July 2005 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author The Canadian government is in the process of establishing a long-term military base in the oil-rich Persian Gulf region. According to a recent article in the Globe and Mail , the Canadian government is negotiating with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to gain control of a section of the Minhad Air Base, located near Dubai, for years, if not decades, to come. Since late 2001, when the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) participated in the US invasion and conquest of Afghanistan, the Canadian military have controlled part of the Minhad facility, operating a clandestine logistical and supply base there. The CAF has dubbed its UAE base Camp Mirage. The Globe Troops from the CAF were for a time the largest single component of the ISAF and currently the Canadian ISAF contingent is the biggest, save that of Germany. Seven hundred Canadian soldiers are stationed in Kabul, with another 240 scheduled to arrive in Kandahar in the near future, followed by a further 1,000 troops next year. To these must be added a complement of 250 troops aboard the HMCS Winnipeg (attached to a US carrier battle group in the Persian Gulf) and 200 troops stationed at Camp Mirage.

a) An accountability framework, an action plan and accountability mechanisms are in place The Canadian Forces approved and adopted the , which integrates many elements of the government's Action Plan for Official Languages (OL). The Minister of National Defence articulated five key commitments in the Strategic Plan.
The OL Strategic Plan provides an integrated strategic orientation to guide the effective implementation of the Official Languages Act (OLA) at DND and in the CF by bringing OL objectives and activities together in a single document and by establishing an accountability framework. The accountability framework assigns responsibility for the implementation of each of the activities included in the Strategic Plan and sets specific deadlines.
The Plan was distributed to all group chiefs and commanders, to all those with responsibility for the implementation of activities and to the OL co-ordinators at all levels (commands, groups, bases, wings, garrisons, units). The OL co-ordinators are responsible for following up on the implementation of activities in their respective organizations. To ensure that progress is made on the five key objectives of the OL Strategic Plan, DND and the CF developed a tool (database) to evaluate the progress in the implementation of the five objectives and to measure the progress on OL.
Senior military officers are accountable for the implementation of OL objectives in their performance appraisals.

What is the Canadian Forces Mental Health Survey? The Canadian Forces Mental Health Survey is a health survey that collects information about the mental health and well-being of Canadian Forces members, the factors that affect their health and their use of health care services. Why is this survey being conducted? In order to provide an appropriate level of mental health services for members of the Canadian Forces (CF), it is essential to have an accurate picture of the state of mental health of its members. The Chief of Review Services (CRS) report highlighted the fact that the state of mental health of CF members was an "information gap". Because Statistics Canada is conducting the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) on mental health in 2002, the Canadian Forces Health Services have contracted Statistics Canada to conduct a survey, which has been adapted from the CCHS.

Canadian Community Health Survey: Canadian Forces supplement on mental health
On September 3, 2003, the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) released the first national results on mental health and well-being. Data are available today from the Canadian Forces Mental Health Survey, a special supplement to the CCHS. The target population of the CCHS itself does not include full-time members of the Canadian Forces. As a result, the Department of National Defence commissioned Statistics Canada to conduct a supplemental survey of armed forces personnel, including personnel on reserve status. This survey measured the prevalence of five mental disorders: major depression, social phobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, and general anxiety disorder. It also measured the prevalence of alcohol dependence. Information and definitions related to this release can be found on the Statistics Canada website. According to the data, 15.1% of the Canadian regular military forces reported symptoms consistent with one or more of the five mental disorders covered in the survey, or alcohol dependence, at some time during the 12 months prior to the interview. The prevalence among the reserves was lower (12.7%). The survey found differences in the prevalence of various disorders between regular and reserve forces, and also found differences between rank and gender.

    Overview
The Canadian Army and its colours are only slightly more complicated than the British. For every apparent rule, there are a dozen exceptions. The regular Canadian Army is a relatively recent innovation, and the Militia (or Milice, part-time reservists) is a much older institution which is the reverse of the British model. In the 1950s, the Canadians sought to associate some Militia regiments (almost all of them single-battalion units with no battalion numeral) with regular regiments for purposes of mobilisation, training, etc. According to this scheme: Le Regiment de Chateauguay in 1954 became "Le Regiment de Chateauguay (4e Bataillon, Royal 22e Regiment)" and in 1956 flipped its title to "4e Bataillon, Royal 22e Regiment (Chateauguay)". Les Fusiliers du St. Laurent amalgamated in 1954 with Le Regiment de Montmagny to become "Les Fusiliers du St. Laurent (5e Battalion, Royal 22e Regiment)" Some time later (I'm not sure when) the subtitle was omitted and the battalion disassociated itself from the R22R.

This flag is used by the Military Police Branch (formerly the Security Branch). The flag is 1:2, white with a central red pale (one third of length) with the "Thunderbird" badge in the centre. The badge shows an Inuit thunderbird in black, while, yellow and red, surrounded by a maple leaf wreath. At the top is a St. Edward's crown and the scroll beneath reads "SECURITAS". The Branch badge is based on the Thunderbird - a mythical native spirit, probably derived from the eagle, whose name signifies the voice of thunder. It is one of the most common emblems of the North West Coast native tribes and is usually the crowning figure on the carved totem poles placed before a chief's house. It is believed to be a symbol of supremacy and power in the life of the tribe. The mystique surrounding this emblem varies according to the legends of the tribe concerned. A common feature of its attributes, however, concerns its role as a protecting spirit, one which gives wise counsel and guards the tribe from evil and misfortune. The face on the breast symbolizes dual transformation. These attributes make it an appropriate symbol for the Security and Military Police services of the Canadian Armed Forces. It is a bold and striking emblem, distinctive in appearance and identifiably Canadian.
