National Library of Canada prepared this bibliographical pathfinder for people interested in learning about Canada's military heritage. Material of interest to genealogists and family historians is included.

Introduction General Section War of 1812 Northwest Campaign South African War ... Comments
Introduction
Desmond Morton notes in the introduction to his work entitled A Military History of Canada , that Canadians have been described as an unmilitary people. Yet, an examination of any history of Canada describes the participation of Canadians in military events ranging from rebellions within their borders to involvement in two world wars and numerous peacekeeping missions in all parts of the world. These events have clearly shaped the way Canadians view themselves and the way others view us. The published literature on Canada's military history is extensive and much of it is held in the collections of the National Library of Canada. To improve awareness of and access to this material, the Library has prepared this bibliographical pathfinder for the general reader with an interest in learning more about Canada's military heritage. Where appropriate, material of interest to genealogists and family historians has also been included. The pathfinder is a work-in-progress. Sections for other military events are planned, to be added to the site in the future.

Mission Statement of the
Chinese Canadian Military Museum
T he Chinese Canadian Military Museum came into being November of 1998 with Howe Lee as the Founder and President. The museum is an integrated component of the Chinese Museum within the Chinese Cultural Centre complex in Vancouver’s Chinatown. The Chinese Canadian participation in the World Wars is largely unknown within and outside the Chinese communities yet their contribution changed the social landscape of Canada forever. Through their war efforts and the efforts of concerned citizens, the Chinese gained their franchise rights to citizenship and to vote, which in turn, led to membership in professional societies such as law and engineering previously closed to them. In short, the Chinese can finally enjoy the opportunities and rights as any other Canadians. The role of the museum is to collect, record and preserve artifacts, memorabilia and photographs and tell their wartime stories. In spite their courage and patriotism, the Canadian War Museum has no display of Chinese Canadian participation nor acknowledged them in the histories of the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force.

From our FAQs file
Question:
Where can I find out about my father's, grandfather's, uncle's, sister's, mother's etc. war service?
Answer:
Personnel records are governed by the Privacy Act. Those for the First World War have been more or less opened to general research and are available at the Library and Archives Canada . Those for the Second World War have not yet been opened. Accordingly, Privacy Act considerations apply and access is possible only to the files of individuals who died twenty or more years ago. These files are also at the Library and Archives Canada specifically on their Canadian Genealogy Centre web site. You may write directly to the Researcher Services Division, Library and Archives Canada . At minimum you should be able to provide full name, rank, service number, date of birth and, if required, date of death for the individual whose record you wish to search. Even where whole files are closed, an abbreviated record of service may be provided. Attestation papers from the First World War are being posted on the Library and Archives Canada web site. Airbase hosts 1st military gay wedding
Last Updated Tue, 14 Jun 2005 13:43:58 EDT CBC News Two men were married in the chapel at Nova Scotia's Greenwood airbase in May, in what's being called the Canadian military's first gay wedding. Lt.-Cmdr. David Greenwood, the base's head chaplain, said a sergeant and a warrant officer were married May 3 in front of about 45 guests. "This couple had been waiting a very long, long time," said Greenwood, declining to give their names because he hadn't asked for permission. In September, the Nova Scotia Supreme Court ruled that banning same-sex marriages is unconstitutional, effectively changing the definition of marriage in the province to "the lawful union of two persons to the exclusion of all others." The military has said it's willing to host gay weddings in jurisdictions where it's legal.
