Since the 1950s, Canada has become peacekeeper to the world par excellence. Canada has consistently provided armed forces to serve the United Nations on peace support missions throughout the world. And, understandably, Canadians take pride in this role. Images of peacekeepers adorn coffee-table books, monuments, stamps and even our money. At a time when other nations resolve their differences through war, Canadians claim to be the world's observers and umpires. All of this, however, has a tendency to overshadow two important facts. First, while peacekeepers may preserve peace, they are none the less trained soldiers. Second, Canada does have a significant military history that both predates and coincides with our career as a peacekeeper. This history includes participation in five wars during this century alone.

    The history of Canadian peacekeeping
The seeds of peacekeeping can be found buried on the battlefields, in the trenches and in the graveyards of Europe and Asia. The men who fought and lived through two world wars never wanted to see another. They believed that by putting an end to regional conflicts they could reduce the potential of the world ever being consumed by war again. They would create a new international body to keep peace in the world and support social and economic progress.
The newly formed United Nations seemed the perfect place to put such lofty ideals into practice; an organization founded on the principle of discussing and mediating ideological and political differences.
The first United Nations peacekeeping mission was in 1948. Its objective was to supervise the cease-fire between Israel and her Arab neighbours after the War of Independence. Monitors were sent to supervise the truce.

I would like to request that all users who correspond with any of these agencies indicate that you found the information on the Internet . In this way, the word will get around that this is an effective communication medium. It's a very effective form of education and such organizations all have self interest reasons for creating demand and constituencies for their services. Thanks.

document.write(document.frmmenu.elements['titleaction'].value); Jacqueline Roy, Communications, Ottawa Barbara Dundas , TC's corporate webmaster, has just completed a very interesting and important project she has published a book called, The History of Women in the Canadian Military. This beautiful, coffee table-type book tells the story of the history of women in the military and includes many photos and a number of paintings from some of Canada's female war artists. The idea for this book a Department of National Defense (DND) millennium project-was developed to inform Canadians of the role women have played in the Canadian armed forces. Barbara noted that many women are not familiar with the history of women in military and are hesitant to join if they think they are breaking new ground: "If you don't see people like yourself in the past of an organization, you won't see yourself in their future," she said. Barbara Dundas The book deal came about in an interesting way. DND posted the book proposal on MERX. Barbara was one of the many who bid on the book, telling them how long it would take to research and write the book, and how much she would charge. Her proposal was the successful bid. She spent from April 1999 until March 2000 researching and writing the book.
