David Taras Broadview. viii, 248. $21.95
Reviewed in University of Toronto Quarterly by MICHAEL DORLAND Media-bashing these days is increasingly similar to what religion used to be in its worst aspects. It has spawned not only legions of virtuous denunciators, but also a class of more or less specialized inquisitors armed with the tortuous instruments of prose for casting out media-devilry and the scourging of the monstrous owners of the media, from its global conglomerates to its crass moguls. These practices have also called forth no end of prophets and seers who peer into the media's entrails seeking signs and portents of either imminent doom and gloom or glimmers of a democratic paradise - if only the media can be cleansed of its many, many sins.
As an exercise in the genre, David Taras's Power and Betrayal in the Canadian Media falls within the mid-range of media-bashing; it is surely not the worst of its kind, nor is it, alas, the best. It is clearly written, well intentioned and heartfelt in its concern, and reasonably thoughtful; it is not, however, an especially sophisticated analysis, nor is it particularly insightful in terms of its preoccupations.

Launched in July 1998, IMPACS Communications Centre is Canada's only full-service, not-for-profit public relations and communication training organization. It is one of IMPACS' key vehicles for "turning up the volume" on civil society. Andr© Picard, the Globe and Mail's community reporter and author of A Call to Alms , has studied the media coverage given to Canada's charitable sector and concluded that Canadian charities are "an invisible giant, an integral part of the lives of citizens, but largely ignored by the media. Their work does not register on the journalistic radar screen, even though the voluntary sector is playing an increasingly important role in shaping public policy and delivering services." We want to turn that around. Our approach is simple: we take the most sophisticated communications tools that are used by government and the corporate sector and we work with charitable and not-for-profit organizations to help them use these tools.

The Canadian Islamic Congress today released its sixth annual media-watch study of major Canadian newspapers, based on research gathered throughout 2003; and for the fourth year in a row, the National Post was ranked as worst offender for its persistent use of anti-Islam terminology.
From 1998 (the year Anti-Islam in the Media was launched) until September 11, 2001, CIC media research showed a modest average annual reduction of 17% in the use of anti-Islam language and terminology. Following that watershed date, however, and continuing during 2002, the data gathered revealed a substantial reversal of this trend. By 2003, the level of anti-Islam occurring in the Canadian media had returned to pre-9/11 levels.
The CIC's Anti-Islam in the Media research project received a 2003 Award of Honour from the Canadian Race Relations Foundation and has been consistently praised by academic experts in the fields of media and communications, race relations and religious studies.

Canada has a well-developed media sector, but cultural output—particularly in English Canada—is often overshadowed by imports from the United States . ... the significant fact about foreign news in Canada is its origins in sources which are beyond the control of Canadian newspapers. Its defects are to a large extent inherent in these sources, that is, the agency method of gathering news.... It bears the impress of personalities and points of view which are not Canadian. (McNaught, 1949, p. 258) When Carlton McNaught wrote that in 1940, he was, of course, describing a world before radio had fully developed and a world before TV. Now, radio is a diverse and mobile medium which can use satellite-based phone links to deliver reports live anytime from anywhere. Television satellites beam not just sound but also pictures around the world in seconds. Yet today, half a century later, his statement is still largely true. International news still reaches Canadians mainly through foreign sources. The decisions about what is news are made in Atlanta, New York, London and, sometimes, Paris. An examination of how foreign news reaches Canadians is a study of cultural imperialism. Changing technology, if anything, has extended the situation pictured by McNaught. News was once filtered through national centres in places such as Toronto. Now, in TV, with satellites, both networks and individual stations can pluck signals out of the air and insert them directly into local news programs.
