Canadian Literature in English
page: Since the 1960s, Canadian gay and lesbian writers have produced a vibrant body of fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry. The Problem of Identity Canadian gay literature is almost a contradiction in terms. Frequently written by authors born in the United States and published there as well, it is difficult to distinguish from writing in more dominant English-speaking cultures. Caught between the traditionally overwhelming influence of British culture and, more recently, the powerful stranglehold of American literature, the Canadian voice (gay or straight) is hard to hear. Sponsor Message.
Marginalized, outnumbered, and patronized (when it is not simply neglected), this voice is often, not surprisingly, ironic. Even within the Library of Congress classification system, Canadian literature has an ambiguous place. In some libraries, it is still "PR," that is, a subspecies of Commonwealth Literature; and in others it is now "PS," that is, a subspecies of American. To be a Canadian writer of any kind, in other words, is to be "queer" in a world where the definitions are made elsewhere.

3 - Comparative Canadian Literature
Delivery Mode: Individualized-Study
Precluded course: ENGL 551 cannot be taken for credit if credit has already been obtained for Athabasca University's ENGL 451. English 551 is a further study of Canada's ethnic minority writing in the context of the on-going discourse between English Canada and Quebec. Among the topics to be examined are: the nature of Canada's national literature, racial questions, the diversity of Canadian culture, nationalism in both English Canada and Quebec, and identity. English 551 is unique in its emphasis on the relationship between English - Canadian and French - Canadian writing, and on the exploration of ethnic minority writing and the immigrant experience in Canada. A number of theories on ethnic minority writing will be discussed. It is assumed that students in English 551 have some knowledge of Canadian literature and history. English 551 will be of particular interest to students in the following MAIS areas of inquiry: Cultural Studies or Canadian Studies.

A bilingual discussion group on canadian literature, literary publishing and Canadian children's literature, hosted by the National Library of Canada.
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/6/20/s20-230-e.html
CANLIT-L Canadian Literature Discussion Group
CANLIT-L is a bilingual discussion group on Canadian literature, literary publishing and Canadian children's literature. The purpose of the list is twofold. It is an opportunity for better communication among writers, publishers, professional associations, librarians, archivists, students, professors, and interested readers, and we hope that there will be lively discussions about particular works, writers, trends, literary theories, and the study and teaching of Canadian literature, among other topics. For individual researchers, the opportunity to ask questions and receive answers about resources for the study of Canadian literature (for example, the location of a particular writer's papers) will encourage more effective research and better appreciation of Canada's literature. Participants are invited to post questions, comments, book reviews, concerns, ideas, information (e.g., announcements of readings, lectures, new courses, new acquisitions of literary papers, etc.) and suggestions for helping to ensure that this list meets the needs of the Canadian literary community. Canadian Studies
Athabasca University has a strong program in Canadian Studies based on three elements:
  • a variety of courses in the major areas of Canadian culture,
  • a flexible program in terms of distance education and individual choices,
  • and faculty who are doing research and publishing in this area.
Students can find the requirements for the 4-year B.A. in Canadian Studies by going to the Programs section. From there you can find detailed descriptions for all the relevant courses. The Centre for Language and Literature has a good selection of courses in Canadian literature: Many of our other English courses are strong in Canadian content. For example our first year English courses: ENGL 211 and 212 include Canadian novels, poems, short stories and plays. The academic staff involved in the Canadian Studies program are active in research and publications on Canadian topics. Our students and the wider academic community benefit from the work of these people. As examples of this research we list here some professors and their area of teaching and research interest which students might like to learn about for their future educational plans in Canadian Studies:

George Woodcock
Worldwide, he is most well known for his books on the philosophy of anarchism and its history, and for his well-received biography, The Crystal Spirit , on his friend George Orwell. From a national perspective, he was a literary champion, founding the journal Canadian Literature in 1959, finally passing on its editorship eighteen years later. The journal was the first of its kind, and it provided a much-needed place for the exploration and celebration of the works of Canadian literary authors. Ravens and Prophets The Crystal Spirit . He taught at the university into the 1970s, and was awarded an honourary DLitt by UBC in 1977 (he received 5 other honourary degrees from other universities). He refused many awards, including the prestigious Order of Canada, choosing to accept only those given by his colleagues and peers. Despite his deteriorating health, G.W. continued to pursue his writing career in the 80s and into the 90s, though not producing to the same degree as he did in the decades before.
