Ripostes: Reflections
on Canadian Literature
Philip Marchand Ripostes is a collection of essays on some salient features of the Canadian literary landscape, a number of which were first published in the Toronto Star, many of which appear in these pages for the first time. Included are essays on Atwood, Findlay, Ondaatje and Margaret Laurence, as well as thematic explorations of Canadian literature such as an account of the demise of the Survival school of Canadian writing, a look at the recent history of the Writers' Union of Canada, an examination of the role of fathers in Canadian fiction, a study of the strange attraction of many of our writers to the occult, and so on. The tone is considered, and critical rather than celebratory, although the essays are respectful of the genuine achievements of Canadian literature in the past few decades. They try to clear the air, as it were, of boosterism, political correctness, and other attitudes which hinder the appreciation and reception of good writing. This is an honest re-appraisal of Canadian literature, undertaken at a time when we need no longer be overcome with relief and euphoria over the fact that some of our authors are now world famous, or at least world famous in Hoboken, New Jersey.

At The Gates
tales from the short road As the stories in this highly imaginative collection attest, our passage from the known into the unknown can occur anywhere. Whether hiking the Himalayas, getting high in a scuzzy nightclub, or managing the last book store on Earth, each of these remarkable characters stands at the gate between this world and the next. Surreal, speculative, and sometimes downright eerie, this is fiction that will give you that rare, pleasurable tingle up the back of your neck. Catherine Hunter This collection of short stories is edited by Uma Parameswaran, and features two of her short stories.
"A hymn to the joys and sorrows of family, in the best, most inclusive sense of the word." - Andreas Schroeder
A collection of poems by award-winning author Uma Parameswaran. These voices capture the experiences of Indo-Canadians. Collectively, the poems addresses various phases of immigrant experience from nostalgia for the land left behind and wonder at the new environment, through the realities of racial discrimination, pressures of settlement and struggle to strike roots, to the final affirmation that "Home is where your feet are, and may your heart be there too."
"A deftly wrought novella possessing a quiet eloquence born of outrage." -

Finding Articles
Journal articles are important in your research. You will want to use periodical indexes and abstracts to update older material or to compare recent events with past events or to find information of current interest. Both popular and scholarly journals are indexed in the general and specialized indexes listed below. Popular magazines have short articles that are written to inform or entertain the general public. They are seldom footnoted, or give the source of information, use non-technical language and are written by authors that on usually on the staff of the magazine. Scholarly journals have articles that are lengthy and list reference in footnotes. They are written by authors that have conducted research in the field and who are usually affiliated with a university or research centre.

Afzal-Khan, Fawzia. Cultural Imperialism and the Indo-English Novel . Penn State UP, 1993. Chartterjee, Partha. Nationalist Thought and the Colonial World: A Derivative Discourse? Zed Books Ltd., 1986. The Nation and its Fragments: Colonial and Postcolonial Histories . Princeton: Princeton UP, 1993. The book starts with challenging Anderson's view of the modular forms of nation-building; discuss India's national projects and their relationships with Women, Peasant, Outcast and Communities.
Arguing that scholars have been mistaken in equating political nationalism with nationalism as such, he shows how anticolonialist nationalists in India produced their own domain of sovereignty within colonial society well before beginning of their political battle with the imperial power. These nationalists divided their culture into material and spiritual domains, and staked an early claim to the spiritual sphere , represented by religion, caste, women and the family, and peasants. Charterjee shows how middle-class elites first imagined the nation into being in this spiritual dimension and then readied it for political contest, all the while 'normalizing' the aspirations of the various marginal groups that typify the spiritual sphere.
