General Reference Sources: Bibliography and Historiography
There is no single, complete work of bibliography on Canadian military history. O.A. Cooke's The Canadian military experience is a very good source for monograph materials, dealing with the period after Confederation. It includes titles of journals in Canadian military history and military affairs, but does not list individual articles within journals. The third edition included material up to 1995; it is already dated. The review article "Canadian military history: its books, its teaching = L'histoire militaire canadienne: ses livres, son enseignement" in the 1995 edition of Bulletin de bibliographie covers the period from earliest settlement to the present and includes articles as well as books, but has limited coverage of specific subjects. It is not widely available, and it too is dated. Most of the references in that article may be found in the various sections of these pathfinders as they are completed. The reader must look beyond purely military history guides to general bibliographies of Canada.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Rediscovering History: Culture, Politics, and the Psyche, edited by Michael Roth. Stanford, California, Stanford University Press, 1994. xv, 535 pp. $65.00 U.S. (cloth) $24.95 U.S. (paper). If cultural history's moment has arrived, there now seems to be a question of which "cultural history"? Another sibling has surfaced under the same name. It is interesting to compare this volume with The New Cultural History (1989) edited by Lynn Hunt, the manifesto-style title of which is indicative of its intentions. Roth's title is no quite so aggressively programmatic, but Rediscovering History does have a certain claim-staking ring to it. Forty years younger than his mentor, Roth sees fine prospects for cultural history in the Schorskean mould freed from the oppressive guardianship of social and intellectual history. The Hunt variety of cultural history is closer to social history, with its demotic tastes. The Schorske-Roth variety, to judge by this volume at least, is closer to intellectual history.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. The History and Power of Writing, by Henri-Jean Martin, translated by Lydia G. Cochrane. Chicago, Illinois, University of Chicago Press, 1994. xv, 591 pp. $39.95 U.S. To attempt to cover the history of written language from primitive scratchings to the infobahn in a single volume may seem foolhardy; to do it with consistent intelligence and insight well-nigh impossible. Yet Henri-Jean Martin, one of the founders and most prolific practitioners of the French histoire du livre school has managed just that, and his The History and Power of Writing is fascinating reading for the specialist and general reader alike. Though not without its omissions and problems, Martin's book presents a unique and elegant survey of written communication, "the soul of a society" p. 42), and this excellent translation will make more widely available the work of one of France's leading cultural historians.
