Internment of Ukrainians in Canada 1914-1920
    Introduction
The purpose of these pages is to inform the general population about the Canadian Government's First National Internment Operations during the period of 1914-1920 which interned Ukrainian Canadians in Concentration Camps across Canada. With the outbreak of World War I, the War Measures Act (1914) was implemented as a result of an Order In Council by the Canadian Government. This resulted in the internment of 8,579 " enemy aliens " of which over 5,000 were Ukrainians who had emigrated to Canada from territories under the control of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It also meant an additional 80,000 individuals (of which the vast majority were Ukrainians) were obliged to register as " enemy aliens " and then required to report to local authorities on a regular basis. These internees were used to develop Canadian infrastructure as " forced-labourers To this date it has not been determined what was the driving force for the Internment. Was it due to wartime xenophobia and war fever, or the Economic benefits of a forced-labour system, or bigoted-driven emotions against Canada's first non-Official language speaking immigrants? The truth is that it was probably due to mixture of these reasons. Unfortunately, the War Measures Act formed the basis for future government incursions on the Civil liberties of Citizens and immigrants to Canada. This act was used as the basis of the internment of the Japanese Canadians in 1941 and the French-Canadians (or Quebecois) in 1970. This act was always implemented via an Order in Council, rather than through approval via the democratically elected parliament. This Act was first implemented during World War I where Ukrainian Canadians were primarly and unjustly made it's first victims.

Exploring Canada: Writing on Canadian History and Society in Finland
Auvo Kostiainen
Canada, with approximately the same kind of natural conditions as Finland, has attracted tens of thousands of Finns as migrants during the last one hundred years. Canada, as a country of multi-ethnic composition, has, on the whole evolved quite a positive sentiment in Finland. But what do the Finns really know about the Canadian past and history, except that the land has been favoured by many Finnish migrants? Despite the modest body of historical knowledge of Canada, on the country have been produced quite a few interesting works in Finland. Here, an analysis will be made about the trends of historical writing on Canada in Finland. What kind of books have appeared, what is the share of historical research, and what is the future of Canadian history studies in Finland? The presentation which follows includes a number of descriptions on Canada as well as historical studies which have been written in the past years and decades. In trying to figure the present situation, I have mainly used information about various departments of history. I do not claim that the information which has been available to me includes everything, but at least the endeavour is supposed to give quite a reliable picture of research on Canadian history in Finland. Canadians in Conflict: An Historian's View Series
  • A series of seven programs which probe some of the most important and controversial issues which recur throughout Canadian history. This series makes a significant contribution to the study of Canadian attitudes past and present. Through the use of documentary film footage, archival photographs and live interviews, each program presents several different perspectives on a given issue. Taken as a whole, the series points to the fundamental issues and problems which recur throughout Canadian history. Written by Desmond Morton, Professor of History at the University of Toronto and noted current affairs newspaper columnist, the series adopts an open-ended and dynamic approach well-suited to classroom use. This series is presented with the assistance of the Ford Motor Company of Canada Limited. Bread and Roses: The Struggle of Canadian Working Women
In most realms of historical study, our understanding of women's experience has come very largely from a comfortable middle-class perspective. This program, using rare Canadian photographs and film footage, seeks to remedy such an historical bias, with a survey of the period 1850 to the mid-1970's. It presents the experience of working women ranging from domestic servants and pioneer wives to the first women doctors and lawyers, and traces the changing focus of the women's movement in seeking workplace reforms. Written in consultation with Sylvia Van Kirk, Professor of History, University of Toronto.

The Library of Congress classification system classes Canadian history in (F1150 is approximate), between the states of the U.S. and Mexico. This is based on a decision made a long time ago (around 1900), which no doubt seemed logical then, but which like many other such decisions, failed to allow for later development. A number of Canadian libraries found the LC scheme inadequate for their collections. Starting in the 1940s at the University of British Columbia, a schedule was developed using the numbers , which follow LC's numbers for South America. The edition of this schedule that is still on hand is dated 1967. By that date, or sometime earlier, F5000-F5999 was adopted for use at Queen's. ( is still used for the Canadian pamphlets in the Lorne Pierce Collection.) For various reasons the F5000-F5999 range too was found inadequate. In the 1970s a whole new schedule was developed in class FC . This was adopted at Queen's around 1976 to replace the F5000s, and has been used since. (Problems can also arise with certain FC numbers, however. See the section on

Where can I find out about my father's, grandfather's, uncle's, sister's, mother's etc. war service?
Answer:
Personnel records are governed by the Privacy Act. Those for the First World War have been more or less opened to general research and are available at the Library and Archives Canada . Those for the Second World War have not yet been opened. Accordingly, Privacy Act considerations apply and access is possible only to the files of individuals who died twenty or more years ago. These files are also at the Library and Archives Canada specifically on their Canadian Genealogy Centre web site. You may write directly to the Researcher Services Division, Library and Archives Canada . At minimum you should be able to provide full name, rank, service number, date of birth and, if required, date of death for the individual whose record you wish to search. Historical overview of monarchies in Canada.
Canada has long historical ties to monarchy. Both the British and French monarchs have ruled over parts of what is known as Canada today. Even prior to European colonization of the region, Aboriginal groups formed quasi-monarchical forms of government. The following provides an overview of the history of monarchy in Canada.
Early Monarchies in Canada
While monarchy in Canada is commonly associated with the British, there have been other monarchical rulers in Canadian history.
