gold rush, influx of prospectors, merchants, adventurers, and others to newly discovered gold fields. One of the most famous of these stampedes in pursuit of riches was the California gold rush. The discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill early in 1848 brought more than 40,000 prospectors to California within two years. Although few of them struck it rich, their presence was an important stimulus to economic growth. Agriculture, commerce, transportation, and industry grew rapidly to meet the needs of the settlers; mining, too, soon became big business as corporations replaced the individual prospector. Vigilante justice and ad hoc political structures quickly gave way to the complex organization of state government. Other large gold rushes took place in Australia (1851–53); Witwatersrand , South Africa (1884); and the

THE HISTORY OF CANADA The Age of Laurier Wilfrid Laurier's regime lasted 15 years. It was one of renewed growth and prosperity. The Manitoba School Question was promptly hushed up by new legislation enacted by the province in accordance with a compromise worked out with Ottawa. To his Cabinet Laurier drew some of the most capable leaders from every part of Canada. Business throughout the world was on an upswing, and the Laurier government rode the crest. The demand for Canadian wheat abroad encouraged immigration, and immigration in turn increased farm production and the value of national exports. "The 20th century belongs to Canada," cried Laurier; and the whole nation took confidence from his assurance. Two new transcontinental railways were begun. By 1905 the west had expanded in both population and economic strength to such an extent that two new provinces, Alberta and Saskatchewan, were carved out of the Northwest Territories. These encouraging developments were inadvertently assisted by an occurrence in the far northwest. Since the Fraser River gold strike of 1858, prospectors had been consistently combing the mountainous areas of British Columbia and to the north. In 1896 their persistence paid off with the discovery of gold nuggets on the Klondike River in the far western Yukon Territory. When the news spread, the gold rush of 1897 began; it was to become the most publicized gold rush in history, eventually to be celebrated in the works of such writers as Jack London and Robert Service.

The Klondike Gold Rush was the largest gold rush of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although it followed numerous earlier gold rushes to Alaska and British Columbia, it was George Carmack's 1896 discovery of gold on Rabbit Creek, a tributary of the Klondike River in Yukon Territory, which launched the most publicized era in the annals of gold fever. Carmack had been prospecting in the area for 10 years without success when he unearthed a 5-dollar pan of coarse gold on Rabbit Creek. That winter, he extracted more than a ton of gold from the creek, which he renamed Bonanza Creek. It was the richest gold strike ever in North America. News of the gold strike reached the outside world in the spring of 1897, when the SS Portland sailed into the port of Seattle, carrying "a ton of gold" according to the city's newspaper. In fact there were more than 2 tons of gold on board. The "ton of gold" phrase was wired to newspapers around the world, and soon thousands of people who had never dreamed of prospecting - and knew nothing about the trade - dropped everything and outfitted for the Klondike. Even the mayor of Seattle himself headed north after resigning his post. Actually reaching the Klondike was far more difficult than most stampeders knew. Of the 3 major routes north, many considered the all-water route the easiest. For those who had money, it offered what seemed to be a comfortable, though long, steamer journey: 3,000 miles from Seattle to St. Michael, on the west coast of Alaska, then 1,700 miles up the Yukon River to Dawson City, YT. Yet conditions on board most boats were crowded and filthy, and few had expected such difficult waters to navigate as they found on the Yukon. Of the 1,800 stampeders who chose this route, only 43 reached Dawson City, and of these, 35 had to turn back for lack of supplies. The majority of boats were frozen in the Yukon and had to await the spring breakup.

Today we tell the second part of our story about the discovery of gold in the area of Canada called the Yukon. We tell about the thousands of people who traveled to Alaska and on to Canada hoping that they would become rich. (THEME) VOICE ONE: Last week, we told how three men discovered huge amounts of gold near the Yukon River in northwestern Canada. Their discovery started a rush of people traveling to the American territory of Alaska and across the border to Canada. History experts believe that between twenty and thirty-thousand people traveled to the area.

This exclusive home video continues the story. Gold Rush 2002 cameras were trained on Team Canada from their first onto the ice in Salt Lake City to their historic step onto the gold medal podium. GOLD RUSH DRAMA - The complete package makes for an epic saga beginning with the hopes of a team still smarting from the 1998 disappointment in Nagano to the tense, tentative start in Salt Lake City to the incredible do-or-die road to Olympic Gold! View from block 107.... The main feature runs at 105 minutes in length and although the story of Team Canada’s journey to the Gold Medal the actual on-ice action included is quite limited. Don’t get me wrong, every goal from every game they played in the Olympics is included with the Gold Medal game and after game celebrations benefitting from a little more focus. But other than that you get brief snatched clips of them training - either at the summer camp or during the Games themselves. But do you know what? It doesn’t really matter! This is so much more than the usual sports highlight DVD I have seen in the past - jam packed with on-ice (or field) action but very little to do with what goes on behind the scenes - here, you get this part of the whole hockey experience in bucket loads!

Women have made their minds up to go to the Klondike, so there is no use trying to discourage them...our wills are strong and unfailing. There are a few things, however, women should carefully consider before starting on this really perilous journey. First of all, delicate women have no right attempting this trip. It means utter collapse. Those who love luxury, comfort, and ease would better remain at home. It takes strong, healthy courageous women to stand the terrible hardships that must necessar ily be endured.... Annie Hall Strong

When Kirby Cote and Chantal Petitclerc leave Athens at the end of the Paralympics, they'll need to pack another bag just for their medals. The two Canadians have certainly left their mark on the 2004 Paralympics, bumping their haul to five gold medals each after victories on Monday. Canada's Kirby Cote won a medal in every event she entered at the Athens Paralympics. (CP Photo) Cote, a swimmer from Winnipeg, won the women's 50-metre freestyle event for visually impaired athletes. Cote, who became Canada's first medallist at the Games with gold in the 100 butterfly more than a week ago, won a medal in every event she entered. She will leave the Games with five gold and two silver medals. Canadian swimmers were unstoppable in the pool at the Paralympics with 40 medals.

Karen E Thuermer reports on the huge potential for Canada in oil production from Alberta’s oil sands – the world’s largest known hydrocarbon source. Move over Saudi Arabia. Today’s petroleum and gas companies are rushing to find alternative sources around the globe. Some people suggest that Canada’s province of Alberta, which is rich in oil sands, may be the site of the next oil boom. “There is more oil in the oil sands of Alberta than in Saudi Arabia,” says Neil Camarta, Shell’s senior vice-president for oil sands. “Canada has a huge resource of over a trillion barrels, from which we believe ultimately 300 billion barrels are recoverable from the oil sands.” In comparison, the US Department of Energy estimates that Saudi Arabia holds around 264 billion barrels of ‘black gold’.

The Mystery and Magic of Canada's Yukon
    The Klondike Trail
    By Walt Rowland
One hundred years ago, a grim procession of tired and dirty men (and a few courageous women) lined up in the northern frontier to climb stairs carved in ice. The steps led up the steep mountains of Alaska's Coast range, amidst glacier clad peaks, to the crest of Chilkoot pass. Each person, carrying a fifty-pound pack, would repeat the climb at least forty times. The numerous trips were required because at the top of the pass is the Canadian border, and there the Royal Canadian Mounted Police required each person entering the Yukon to possses one year's worth of food and other goods before they could pass into the interior. Only one thing could have convinced 100,000 men and women to leave the comfort and security of civilization and venture across the globe to a land hardly explored, a land as wild and forbidding as any on earth. That one thing, of course, was GOLD! The miners' story actually starts a few years earlier, on the Seventeenth of August, 1896.
