Description
The Canadian Geographical Names Data Base (CGNDB) is the data bank of Canada's geographical names, maintained by the Geographical Names Section, part of the Centre for Topographic Information, Geomatics Canada, Natural Resources Canada. Its purpose is to store names and their attributes that have been approved by the Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC) and to make these authoritative records available for government and public use. The subset of the CGNDB data which will be served up in the GeoBase Portal for data extraction and visualization consists of current officially approved names, and will be referred to as the Canadian Geographical Names, Level 1 (CGN1) collection. This is also the collection that is being made available through the Canadian Geographical Names Service (CGNS). The geographic extent of this data is the Canadian landmass and water bodies. The temporal extent of the data is from 1897 to present. The purpose of the CGN data set is to provide official names for mapping and charting, gazetteer production, and World Wide Web reference, and other georeferenced digital systems.

The longest distance east to west is 5,514 kilometres from Cape Spear, Newfoundland and Labrador, to the Yukon Territory-Alaska boundary. The total length of the Canada-United States boundary is 8,890 kilometres. Canada has the longest coastline of any country in the world. The coastline includes the mainland coast and also the coasts of offshore islands. The total length of Canada's coastline is 202 080 kilometres. The Trans-Canada Highway length is 7,604 kilometres. It is the longest national highway in the world. Canada's vast area means it has many varying types of terrain, much of which is mountainous. The principal mountainous region is the Western Cordillera, or Cordilleran, mountain system located in western Canada in British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon Territory, and Northwest Territories. A second major mountain system in Canada is located along the north-eastern seaboard from Ellesmere Island down through to the Torngat Mountains of Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador. A third system of significance is the Appalachians which cross much of Eastern Canada.

Close this window to return to the Course List Geography 362: Geography of Canada COURSE OVERVIEW AND FACULTY MEMBER'S EXPECTATIONS Your instructor has several premises for this course in terms of how you should learn about the geography of Canada and how you should demonstrate what you have learned. First, the premises and expectations for how you will be studying Canadian geography:
    • Your circumstances while taking this course in the correspondence mode are such that you are limited to access to your textbook and an atlas. Usage of academic resources from the Internet and elsewhere, while encouraged, is not expected.
    • Maps are extremely important tools in geographical inquiries, especially when dealing with regional studies. While you do not need to be a cartographer, you are expected to look carefully and thoughtfully at the maps in your textbook and those maps of Canada in the atlas for this course, the Hammond Odyssey Atlas of North America Please purchase this atlas from MBSDirect. Outline maps for the written assignments will be bundled with the atlas.
Now, the premises and expectations for demonstrating what you have learned about the geography of Canada:
