Federal judge orders stay of execution for Canadian
December 9, 1998
Web posted at: 6:41 p.m. EST (2341 GMT) AUSTIN, Texas (CNN) A federal judge ordered a stay Wednesday in the execution of Canadian Joseph Stanley Faulder. The judge cited questions about whether Faulder had gotten full due process of the law, a Texas official said. Texas officials immediately appealed, and were planning to carry out his execution Thursday for the 1975 murder of oil matriarch Inez Phillips during a robbery at her Gladewater, Texas, home. Earlier Wednesday, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles denied Faulder's request for a lesser sentence. Faulder's case has attracted international attention because he is a Canadian citizen, and because he was not advised of his rights as a Canadian citizen when he was arrested. Citing international law, U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright urged Texas Governor George W. Bush to postpone the execution and consider commuting the sentence to life.

The Choice is Clear
The Liberal Party of Canada has a proven track record, and is moving forward as the only party that will practice fiscal responsibility while maintaining the social programs Canadians depend on. The Liberal Party assures the values that define the nation will be protected, but under an Alliance-Conservative government we can not be certain. Prime Minister Paul Martin will promote the Canada Health Act and make fixing health care for a generation his number one priority. He’ll tackle waiting times like he did the deficit. Alliance-Conservative leader Stephen Harper will not protect medicare.
