The Information Commissioner investigates complaints from people who believe they have been denied rights under the Access to Information Act — Canada's freedom of information legislation. An independent ombudsman appointed by Parliament, the Information Commissioner has strong investigative powers. He mediates between dissatisfied applicants and government institutions. Since he is an ombudsman, the commissioner may not order a complaint resolved in a particular way. Thus he relies on persuasion to solve disputes, asking for a Federal Court review only if he believes an individual has been improperly denied access and a negotiated solution has proved impossible. List of Producers Salt is such a common part of our everyday existence that we rarely think of it as a natural resource that must be discovered, mined, processed and marketed. Yet salt is so vital to our lives that without it we could perish. We are all benefactors of the rich deposits throughout Canada that contribute to our well-being and our comfortable way of life. The Legacy of Salt Scientists believe that, initially, seas were not salty. It took millions of years to wash out some of the salt locked up in the rocks of continents and for the waters to become brine. About 350 million years ago a large part of North America was covered by ocean. In places where bays existed with very restricted openings to the ocean, salt was deposited in great quantities by solar evaporation as the seas retreated. The deposits were subsequently covered with earth sediments. It is to these locations in Canada that we turn today for our salt supplies. The first air-breathing creature to adapt to a land environment brought a heritage from the seas which survives in man today: the salty fluids of the ocean. Salt is such an important part of the

~:~ Canadian Heritage River System ~:~
The Canadian Heritage Rivers System (CHRS) is a co-operative program, developed and run by the parks administrations of federal, provincial, and territorial governments to give national recognition to the important rivers of Canada. The primary objective of the program is to ensure that rivers which are outstanding examples of Canada's natural heritage, which have played a significant role in Canadian history, or which offer outstanding opportunities for recreation, are maintained or improved in such a way that their distinctive value is conserved while public use and enjoyment is enhanced. On January 18, 1984, the Canadian Heritage Rivers Board was established to administer the CHRS program and to review river nominations for inclusion in that program. The CHRS Board is currently comprised of fourteen members, two appointed by the federal government, and one appointed by each of the participating provincial and territorial governments. As of February 1, 1994, sections of twenty-seven different rivers, with a total length of 5802 km, had been designated or nominated to the System. Nomination of the rivers to the CHRS may be made only by participating governments. However, private citizens or groups may suggest rivers to the responsible provincial or territorial parks agencies. In the Hillsborough River's case the nomination was co-sponsored by the Province and the Hillsborough River Association.

Help Search Links Site Map FJA Home Information about this service Federal Court / Federal Court of Appeal The Federal Court of Canada was established in 1971 as the successor to the Exchequer Court of Canada which had been created in 1875. A major reason for the new Court's creation was the increase in the number of federal boards and commissions and the realization that a national court was needed to review the decisions of the administrative tribunals. Speaking in the House of Commons when the legislation to create the new Court was being debated, Justice Minister Turner stated that the Federal Court would serve to balance the rights of the citizen and the state by providing recourse against bigness, alienation and distance from the decision-making power. The Federal Court Act was recently amended by the Courts Administration Service Act , which came into force on July 2, 2003. The two divisions of the Federal Court became a separate court of appeal, continued under the name "Federal Court of Appeal", and a trial court, continued under the name "Federal Court". The short title of the Act is now the Federal Courts Act . To reflect these legislative changes, the Federal Court Reports, the official reports of the two courts was continued under the name "Federal Courts Reports" commencing with 2004, Volume 1. At the same time, the citation was changed to "F.C.R." to avoid confusion with the new neutral citation used by the Federal Court.
