Hummingbird partnered with CGI Group Inc., the largest Canadian independent information technology (IT) services firm, to integrate RDIMS, a Government of Canada shared-system initiative that allows employees to capture, manage, store, preserve, protect and retrieve document-based information. The RDIMS initiative provides access to all kinds of electronic documents, including word-processing documents, spreadsheets, photos, forms and e-mail messages, improving information sharing and enhancing the efficiency of the records management function. With Hummingbird DM, users can access all shared documents from a single repository. The centralized repository ensures that documents and records of all types are stored, indexed and managed from a single source, minimizing the risk of duplicate records and streamlining administrative functions. Hummingbird DM provides an intuitive access point to the document repository that minimizes re-training requirements for the government users. The web-based deployment eliminates the need for IT staff to visit individual workstations for system upgrades, lowering the time and cost of administration. Users can access documents and records from within familiar desktop interfaces, including the Windows Desktop, Windows Explorer, Microsoft Outlook and native authoring tools, which will enable them to easily access, share and manage document-based information more efficiently.

The Budget and Canadian Democratic Tradition
An overview of the role of the budget in the Canadian democratic system.
While the Budget helps the federal government manage its finances and plan for the future, it also play an important role in the Canadian democratic system. The federal government (symbolized by the Prime Minister and Cabinet) cannot simply collect and spend public money in any which way it likes. Instead, it must first get the permission of our elected representatives in the Canadian Parliament. The federal government must follow two steps to get this democratic permission. First, the government must present its budgets for the next year to Parliament for review. This is usually done every year in early spring (February or March). Second, after Parliament has reviewed the budgets, it must vote on whether to support or reject them.

A multimedia presentation illustrating how federal revenues were spent in the most recent fiscal year available (2003-04), as well as the main sources of government revenue. (requires a Flash plug-in HTML version also available Most years the Government releases one major document that sets out where and how it plans to collect and invest taxpayers’ money. How much money will go to pay down the debt?
    How much to health care?
Will there be more money for research and development?
Will taxes go up or down? The answers affect all Canadians, and they will be in that document, the budget. It’s a blueprint for how the Government wants to set the annual economic agenda for Canada. And it’s the job of the Department of Finance to prepare it. The budget, usually tabled early in the year, is generally preceded in the fall by another major statement, the Economic and Fiscal Update

Bilingual List of Titles of Federal,
    Provincial and Territorial Ministers
Compiled by Gilles Boileau of the Translation Bureau assigned to the Canadian Intergovernmental Conference Secretariat. We do not claim that this is an authoritative list. Rather it is the culmination of an effort to standardize ministers' titles in our translations on the basis of bilingual lists provided by a number of governments, lists found on the Internet, the Scott's Government Index and the Canadian Parliamentary Guide The provinces are placed in the order they joined Confederation, while territories appear at the end according to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms order. Furthermore, the departments are listed alphabetically in each category. We would ask our readers to excuse any errors or omissions and would appreciate it if they would report any that they may find to Gilles Boileau at gboileau@scics.gc.ca
