June 1999 Canadian Productivity - The sky is not falling
Download PDF Version of this document
Introduction
It has become fashionable to blame Canada’s allegedly poor productivity performance for many of the ills that have afflicted our economy in the 1990s. Everything from the stagnation in our living standards, to the drop in value of the Canadian dollar and to our lagging stock markets have been ascribed to our purported inability to match other countries’ advances in productivity. This view has taken particular currency since such prominent organizations as the OECD have rung alarm bells and issued warnings about our relative living standards if current productivity trends were not substantially improved. However, statistics released over the past several months have challenged this view and sparked a debate. These statistics contradict the notion that Canada has lagged the US, our chief trading partner, in productivity growth. In fact, they actually show that our performance has been quite respectable at the most aggregate level, even in the 1990s.

Economics This is a selective list of reference sources for the study of Economics. This is NOT an exhaustive list. The main source of information concerning the Bishop’s Library collection is BORIS, the library’s online catalogue. It should always be consulted in order to find more books, periodicals, or other items on any given subject. To find material on the library shelves look for the Library of Congress Classification (call) numbers from HB - HF. Books marked Ref. or Ref.Ind.Sd. are located in the Reference Room. Some material listed in the Student’s Guide to Reference Sources in Business Administration may also be helpful. If you require help in locating material, ask for assistance at the Reference Desk. ELECTRONIC SOURCES The Reference Department has several relevant databases available via the Library’s Periodical Indexes and Databases page. These include, among others, Academic Search Premier, Business Source Premier, EconLit, CBCA (via ProQuest), Canadian Newstand (ProQuest), Emerald, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, Social Sciences Citation Index, and E-Stat (including CANSIM). Please ask at the Reference Desk for more information about these important resources. SOME USEFUL INTERNET SITES A good place to start searching for internet resources is the resources page of the Bishop’s University Economics department.
