Hugh MacLennan:
Dramatizing Canadian Culture John Hugh MacLennan, a five-time winner of Canada’s prestigious Governor General’s Literary Award, contributed immensely to the creation of a distinct Canadian literature. His outstanding literary talents secured for him national and international acclaim before his death on November 9, 1990. Although MacLennan regarded Halifax as his home town, he was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, a Cape Breton coastal community dominated, for many years, by the coal-mining industry. When he was seven years old, MacLennan moved with his family to Halifax. On the morning of December 6, 1917 he witnessed, as a ten-year-old boy, the Halifax explosion caused by the collision of a Belgian relief ship and a French munitions vessel. This explosion, estimated to have been the world’s worst before the dropping of the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, in August 1945, left an indelible impression on young MacLennan. No wonder! Sixteen hundred Haligonians died in the explosion, nine thousand were injured, and more than 25,000 lost their homes or encountered major difficulties as a result of property damage. The explosion occurred at 8.45 A.M. Since classes in Halifax schools did not begin in those days until 9.30 A.M., MacLennan, was still at home and thus escaped death or injuries he might have suffered had he been in school.

Terry Fox Runs
One person can make a difference. When Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope run across Canada on April 12, 1980 his goal was to raise $1 for every person in Canada for cancer research. That would have been about $24 million in 1980. The Terry Fox Foundation says that in the last 25 years more than $360 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name. Just yesterday, Ujjal Dosanjh, the Canadian federal Minister of Health, gave a $10-million grant from the Public Health Agency of Canada to the Terry Fox Foundation. And the marathon continues....

My First Macintosh
comment September 2nd, 2005 in technology Her name is Anna. She is one week old and weighs 4.6 pounds. Ever since she arrived in my life we have been inseparable. We watch movies together, listen to music, and chat with friends. I take her with me to work, we go biking together and I keep her near while I work. She illuminates my bedroom with her ghostly white ghostly glow that keeps me a wake while I try to sleep and I keep her nice and clean while spoiling her with expensive toys, like, say, an expensive mouse? Exorbitant pricing aside, Mac OX Tiger is very pleasant to use, with its large, colourful and bubbly icons and windows. Though, after using Windows for ten years, it took a while to become accustomed to Macintosh’s way of doing things. I remember Apple briefly having something like the Windows “start” button under their “Apple” menu, but it seems to have been replaced by the “Dock”—a collection of frequently used applications that remain stationary at the bottom of my screen at all times. (Though it can easily be configured to be a vertical menu on either side of my screen or hidden all together). Another nifty Apple feature allows for two fingers on a touchpad to be used for vertical, horizontal and diagonal scrolling. The keyboard is supposedly full sized, but it doesn’t feel that way. Compared to other notebook keyboards I have used, the iBook keyboard is usable enough for what it is, but a centimeter too short in length to be a real full sized keyboard. And all though I would really like to have that extra centimeter, I would be sacrificing the appeal of the iBook—it’s size. It’s very easy to lug around and rests comfortable on my lap for long periods of use. I was initially worried that the 12inch screen would strain my eyes with resolutions usually used for 17inch monitors (1024 x 768 pixels), but the screen displays very smooth text that is actually more readable than what I am accustomed to on desktop displays. In fact, I often forget I am using such a small screen until I am looking at my little notebook on my desk from afar.
