Churches Respond to Defence White Paper
Dwight Burkhardt On Ash Wednesday, twelve Canadian church leaders issued a strong critique of the federal Defence White Paper, "Challenge and Commitment: A Defence Policy for Canada." Those signing included official heads of the five largest Canadian churches (Anglican, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, and United) and representatives of Armenian, Ethiopian Orthodox, Mennonite, Polish Catholic, and Quaker groups. Under the auspices of the Canadian Council of Churches, the churches had asked Project Ploughshares to prepare a document for face-to-face meetings with Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Minister of External Affairs Joe Clark. When both refused to meet, the church leaders decided to release the Open Letter. The lengthy Open Letter says that Canada's primary "defence" responsibility is to the development and preservation of a just international order that respects the integrity of Canada and other countries. There is "no place for nuclear weapons in national defence policies" in this "common security'" approach. "A foundational objective of Canadian defence policy must be to reduce the nuclear options of all the nuclear powers." Canada must urgently pursue "mutual and universal nuclear disarmament" and elimination of other weapons of mass destruction. Canada must also respond constructively to military threats to the international order beyond our own borders.

Fred Franklin As I follow with amazement and some satisfaction Pinochet's adventures in Britain, it all comes back to me: the Inter-Faith workshop on social change on Grindstone Island I attended in the summer of 1973, the military coup on Sept.11th.1973, that violently overthrew Salvador Allende's duly elected democratic Government in Santiago, Chile; the emergency meeting at the Ecumenical Forum on the following morning where we all came together to share the news and to ask ourselves "what do we do now?" I became personally much involved in the weekly "crisis meetings," with assisting, organizing and helping to settle the incredibly distraught group of refugees when they finally began to arrive. This was ecumenical teamwork at its very best, exhilarating and exhausting.

The Lutheran World Federation Lutheran World Information Tenth LWF Assembly will take place in Winnipeg, Canada in 2003 TURKU, Finland/GENEVA, 19 June 2000 (LWI) – The Tenth Assembly of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) will take place in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 2003. The host church is the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC).
The governing body of the LWF took this decision on 19 June 2000 following a near-unanimous secret ballot vote, of which the choice was between the ELCIC and the North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany. For the venue, the ballot was 34 for, five against and three abstensions. For the timing, there were 29 votes for, four against and nine abstentions respectively for the choice between 2003 and 2004.
This is the second time that a meeting of the highest decision-making body of the LWF will be taking place in North America. Previous assemblies have been held as follows: at the founding of the Federation in Lund, Sweden (1947); Hanover Germany (1952); Minneapolis, USA (1957); Helsinki, Finland (1963); Evian, France (1970); Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania (1977); Budapest, Hungary (1984); Curitiba, Brazil (1990); and Hong Kong, China (1997).
Accepting the responsibility placed upon the Canadian church by the governing body of the LWF, the presiding bishop of the ELCIC, Telmor Sartison, expressed gratitude for the choice taken. He invoked the blessing in Eph. 3: 20-21:"Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever. Amen."

WELCOME TO OUR WEBSITE! The Canadian Evangelical Christian Churches welcomes you to the most dynamic and exciting denomination in Canada! CECC is Independent - Interdenominational - United in One Accord, and bridges the gap between the various denominational traditions. God calls people to serve in different ways in the Bible. "who will go for me and who shall I send?" asks God of Isaiah, who responds by saying, "Here I am, send me!"
God calls Jeremiah to be a prophet but he replies that he is just a boy and not qualified. God tells him not to worry because God will place His words in Jeremiah's mouth.
David is an example of the call of God to be the King of Israel. This is seen in the process of selection in 1 Samuel. When David is brought before Samuel the Lord says, "Arise anoint him, for this is he."
In the New Testament, Jesus calls the apostles Andrew and Peter, and they drop everything to follow him. Christianity, since then, has exploded around the world.
Is God calling you to serve the Church in a special way?

his and each year, St. Peter Publications is happy to produce a popular Church calendar which includes the Sundays, Holy Days, Saints' Days and seasons of the Church Year, in accordance with the calendar from the Book of Common Prayer (1962) of the Anglican Church of Canada. The 2005 Calendar is illustrated with attractive original watercolours of Anglican churches throughout Canada, painted by Montreal-born Canadian artist Peter Bresnen. The squares provided for each day provide plenty of room for making notes on your Canadian Church Calendar. Featured for 2005 are churches from Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, British Columbia, Newfoundland, Alberta, and Quebec. Would you like to see a picture of your parish church in a future calendar? Send colour photos of the church (in different seasons, and from different angles) for consideration to the Calendar Editors at St. Peter Publications. Thanks to all who have sent photos in the past year—if they did not appear, they are on file for future use. Also, if you wish to purchase the original artwork from the calendar for your parish or personal use, contact us as soon as possible.
