    VoIP is the new landline
The term "VoIP" has been cropping up more and more frequently, giving the impression of a particularly hot buzzword. But VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is far more than just a buzzword. It’s a revolution assaulting the lofty towers of the phone company’s entrenched landlines, and it’s coming to an office near you.

Librairie Boulevard co-founder dies, age 77
On Sunday, September 4, Herman Pouliot died at the age of 77. Born in 1928, Herman Pouliot co-founded Librairie Boulevard Inc. with his brother-in-law, Clermont Pouliot, in 1959. Librairie Boulevard later became a key component of Corporate Express, which vends office products direct to businesses across North America.
By 1964 they opened their first distribution centre in Saint-Leonard, a far cry from Boulevard’s humble beginnings in a small Montreal shop. A Quebec City branch opened in 1982, and by 1989 it had outgrown its beginnings and was forced to transfer its Saint-Leonard distribution centre to a Boucherville building designed to serve the specific needs of Librarie Boulevard. In 1996 the enterprise was purchased by Corporate Express.
Herman Pouliot is survived by his wife, Liliane and his three sons Donald Pouliot, President of the Quebec Division of Corporate Express, David Pouliot, Sales Manager for the Quebec Division, and Stephane Pouliot, Marketing Department Head of the Quebec Division. He was pre-deceased by his fourth son Sylvain Pouliot.

    The Euro
How will it impact Canadian business?
    by Barry Davenport
    Barry Davenport and Associates, Inc.
The arrival of the new European currency last January was a critical event in the long
journey toward European economic and monetary union. The process began over forty years ago when the "Treaty of Rome" came into effect, setting the stage for the long-term removal of tariffs to create a free trade zone. The progress of the European Union eventually led to the 1992 signing of the Maastricht Treaty, which enabled the free movement of goods,
services, people and capital between it's member countries. That Treaty also facilitated a convergence of economic policies among it's members, and provided for the creation of a single currency - the euro - by 2000, an objective that was eventually reached one year early.
The launch of the euro required intricate orchestration
The "count-down" to the new currency began in earnest in May, 1998, when bilateral exchange rates between the eleven participating countries were fixed and the European Central Bank was created. Following the fixing of the individual member countries exchange rates against the euro in December 1998 the new currency was introduced for financial transactions on January 1st 1999. The initial participating countries will have a population of 290 million and will represent an economic group three quarters the size of the U.S. economy.
