The History Department at the University of British Columbia offers a complete range of programmes, including a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Arts with Honours; a Master of Arts; and a Doctor of Philosophy.
The geographical foci and intellectual approaches of the thirty faculty members who comprise the department's teaching faculty vary widely. The Department's primary strengths lie in Canadian, Asian, European, American and Latin American history. In temporal terms its greatest emphasis is on the modern period (since 1800), though it has strength in the history of early modern Europe and North America.
The research and teaching interests of the department's faculty centre on a diverse set of problems and topics, including religion; gender; popular culture; the history of ideas; comparative nationalisms; migration; political culture; the history of science and technology; the family; native history; labour; international relations; resources and business; and urban history. Faculty research and teaching in these areas are supported by long-established and well-maintained designated collections in one of Canada's leading university research libraries.
The History Department's primary academic goals can be grouped under five headings.

Bilateral Relations contributes to the advancement of Canada's international cultural diversity agenda abroad, by developing and maintaining strategic bilateral relationships. Canada is engaged in bilateral cultural discussions with many countries. We have extensive relationships and frequently meet with France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Our long and shared history and traditions with these countries make them key strategic partners in the advancement of our international cultural diversity agenda. In addition to fostering these traditional relationships, bilateral relations with countries from other regions of the world are equally important. The countries are strategic partners owing to their influence, regionally and internationally, and are active in their support or advocacy of our cultural diversity agenda. Some of these countries include: Columbia, Mexico, South Africa, Brazil, South Korea and countries of the Caribbean.

Glossary The Canadian Approach to Diplomacy Canada's International Relations Canada's International Relations Canada's Role in the UN Canada's Role in NATO Canada is, and has been for many years, a proud and active member in both the UN and NATO . In both of these organizations, Canada is backed up by all other nations belonging to those organizations in regards to International Safety and Security. Since the early 1950's, Canada and Europe have built on a trust, and have strengthened. Twice a year, these nations come together to address foreign and security policy issues, and implement a solution. Aside from the US, Canada is the only nation to be involved in regular trans-Atlantic meetings on safety and security issues. Canada is actively involved in safety and security with the US, for obvious geographical reasons. These bonds are strong and very successful. Canada and the US have a long history of successful teamwork. The US is by far Canada's most important ally. The two countries work together to maintain international peace and avoid violent conflicts. The American-led military actions in Iraq are viewed by some people as creating international violence. Others feel that without the US's strong opposition to the way Iraq functions, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein could not, and would not be stopped. Many fear that if Mr. Hussein does not disarm, the only thing worse than going to war would be to wait for an attack on a peaceful nation again.
