Music, Magical Flights and Memories
Theatre
Follow the misadventures of the gullible and guileless Charity Hop Valentine, a dance hostess who always gives her heart and her dreams to the wrong man. With songs like If My Friends Could See Me Now and Big Spender, this wonderful musical ultimately questions the limitations of the American dream and the ideals of fairy-tale romances. Sweet Charity, Walterdale Theatre, through July 9. Shiver me timbers! Jubilations Dinner Theatre is presenting The Pirates of the North Saskatchewan and you're in for a guaranteed good time. Welcome aboard "The Not-so-much" - one of the oldest, yet newly refurbished vessels to ever set sail on the prairie seas! Join the illustrious Captain Jack Partridge as he takes you down the North Saskatchewan River on a swashbuckling adventure of love, deceit, and revenge. Sit back and hear old Jack recall the tale of the maiden voyage of the ship, and how his struggle to claim his Father's two million dollar inheritance, hidden somewhere on the ship, turns into pirate family battle. Then there's the Dreaded Pirate Roberts who is only looking for a romantic evening on the ship with his bride to be, Belle Buttercup, until it is interrupted by Jack's greedy pirate family in search of their plunder. Take heed! This be no average pirate tale. Starting Aug. 19. Or take a walk down memory lane with the Queen of Country Music. A disc jockey narrates the life of Patsy Cline from her first appearance at age fifteen singing in Honky Tonks to her triumphant appearances at the Grande Ole Opry. This toe-tapping, foot stomping musical contains Always, Sweet Dreams and A Closer Walk With Thee, and offers a magical evening with humour and great music for audiences of all ages. A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline, Mayfield Inn Dinner Theatre, through September 5.

CANADA DAY COASTER
The templates were originally made for a CD (which is 4.75 inches in diameter), but anything that's round and about the same size works... Make sure you ask an adult before you start gluing things to CD's!!
Materials (mobile):
  • a printer, paper, scissors, glue CD, margarine container lid or cardboard, and clear contact paper (you can get at office supply stores... it cost us about $5 for a roll that makes about 100 bookmarks or 20 coasters. It is one fairly inexpensive, purchased craft supply that I do like to have around the house... it can also be used on mobiles, necklaces or paper crafts if you're giving them as gifts to make them last longer).
Instructions:
  • Print out the templates of choice.
Colour (where appropriate) and cut out the template pieces.
Glue the maple leaf into the center of the circle.
    Let the glue dry.
Trace around the CD onto the contact paper and cut out (a bit larger than the CD).
Cover CD with contact paper... trim as necessary)
Templates:
  • Close the template window after printing to return to this screen.

The second Summer Explorations in Canadian Cultures was another successful year for the program. Building on the strengths of the first year's program as well as taking into account the comments of the past participants, a more relaxed and flexible program was set up. Participants were given the option of attending for 5, 7 or 14 days. Professors, teachers, librarians and students from: Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Pakistan, United States, Cuba and Canada expanded their knowledge of Canada by attending SECC. More time was set aside for individual research and reflection. Most of the participants found this to be highly satisfactory arrangement. As with the previous year, the comments and suggestions of the participants will be taken into account for the planning of Summer Explorations in Canadian Cultures 2000.

Schedule '99 Sunday, June 27 - Day of Arrival Participants arrive in Peterborough at Traill College. Named in honour of the noted author, botanist and pioneer settler of the Peterborough area, Catharine Parr Traill College is one of the founding colleges of Trent University. The college consists of a number of old houses of architectural and historic significance, and one relatively modern building, Wallis Hall (the residence).
