Under the North Star
Black Communities in Upper Canada Before Confederation (1867)
Donald G. Simpson
Editor: Paul E. Lovejoy
Donald Simpson’s study of the black communities in Upper Canada before 1867 contributes to our understanding of how the Underground Railroad (UGRR) undermined slavery in the United States. Based on detailed research, Under the North Star – Black Communities in Upper Canada examines what happened to black refugees once they arrived in Canada. Fugitive slaves and free blacks alike fled to Canada, especially after the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, and in making this move, they revealed the intense
resistance to slavery and racism in North America. Like the maroons, cimarones, palenque, and kilombo in the Caribbean, Hispanic America and Brazil, the black communities of Upper Canada asserted their dignity through their independence, hard work, and persistence in maintaining sanctuaries

Nicholsons of Skye Battle Cry "Scorrybreac" The Nicholsons have been a Hebridean clan for over 700 years. The Chief took his designation from Scorrybreac, near Portree in Skye. The first Nicholson on records of history, was John, son of Nicail, early in the 14th Century.
In the 19th century, the Nicholsons along with all the other Highland Clans were badly affected by the Highland Clearances. The Chief was forced to abandon the ancestral home of Scorrybreac, and his family settled in Tasmania where the present chief of the clan lives.
"In 1987, part of our original clan property was for sale. Within 9 months, the world wide clan raised the entire amount to purchase the 130 acre Ben Chracaigh (ben crak-aig) property. This wildly beautiful spit of land juts out into the Sound between Skye and Raasay just above Portree. It encompasses the legendary Piper's or MacCoitar's (MacArthur) cave. The control of the property and funds has been placed in perpetual trust under Urras Clann MacNeacail with a group of Clan members living on Skye as property managers. The North American membership has established the Corrybreac fund, Inc. to continue the fund raising effort, not only for Ben Chracaig, but for other projects of historical importance to the Clan" - Excerpt from The Clan MacNicol Brochure, Dana McNicol, 1606 - 1541 Riverside Drive, Ottawa, Ontario, K1G4E2, Canada

    Canadian Sheet Music Before 1867
    Background
The earliest examples of sheet music relating to Canada in the Library and Archives Canada collection were published in London towards the end of the 18th century. At that time, the glorification of war heroes was much in vogue. The demand for battle music was met by such pieces as W. B. de Krifft's Siege of Quebec ; the poignant ballad by Thomas Paine, On the Death of General Wolfe ; and How Stands the Glass Around , by General James Wolfe himself, possibly written on the eve of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. Reports of travellers passing through the British provinces fuelled the European fascination with new territories. Their accounts told of singing, fiddling and dancing, especially in French Canada, and the rhythmic songs of the voyageurs were soon made legendary by romantic descriptions carried back to the Old World. Thomas Moore wrote the well-known Canadian Boat Song after one such trip and published it in London in 1805. It was so popular that it was republished several times over the next forty years in Boston, New York and Philadelphia. Music publishing and printing in Europe was by then a thriving industry, but it did not begin in Canada until 1800.
