ISMRM Regional Organizing Committee Suggested Recreational Activities
The postponement of the ISMRM meeting to July opens a number of opportunities for things to do outside the City of Toronto. The quintessential Ontario recreation is canoeing. The canoe was developed by the Indians of Eastern Canada and was a means of transport on the many lakes and rivers of the province. These lakes are often disconnected by short segments of land necessitating portaging. The canoe is an ideal craft for this kind of travel and has become a holiday activity for many people around Southern Ontario. Several Provincial Parks are located within two to four hours of Toronto and provide ideal canoeing opportunities ( www.ontarioparks.com ). The best known Ontario park is Algonquin Provincial Park, which attracts canoeists from around the world to its pristine lakes and forests. It tends to be rather busy in the summer and requires advanced booking. The most picturesque park is Killarney Provincial Park about four hours north of Toronto in the direction of Sudbury. This park allows for a combination of canoeing and hiking. One of the newest parks only two hours from Toronto is Massauga Provincial Park which consists of lakes and some segments of the

Although Swedes and Dutch were the first European settlers, William Penn, a Quaker, named Pennsylvania in honor of his father by combining the name Penn and the Latin term sylvania, which translates as "woodlands", to come up with "Penn's woodlands." Pennsylvania was the second of the original 13 states of the Union (1787).
Today, two major cities dominate the state Philadelphia, home of the Liberty Bell, Constitution Hall, and a thriving metropolitan area, and Pittsburgh, a busy inland river port.
Pennsylvania is one of the nation's most historic states. Philadelphia is often called the cradle of the American Nation. It was here that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were drawn up by the founding fathers.
The Pocono Mountains and the Delaware Water Gap provide popular recreational activities.
The Pennsylvania Dutch region in south-central Pennsylvania is another favorite of sightseers. Some Pennsylvania Dutch groups, including the Amish and the Mennonites, are called the Plain People; they live and dress as their ancestors did, with no modern conveniences.

People use braided rivers for fishing, camping, boating, kayaking, wildlife watching, and so on. The tourism industry in the Upper Waitaki Basin includes activities like fishing tours, home-stays, and eco-tourism. However, braided river birds are very vulnerable to disturbance by humans and their activities. For example, if riverbed birds are disturbed from their nests, eggs and chicks can be cooked by high temperatures or chilled in low temperatures, they can be run over, or be eaten by pet dogs and cats. Recreational users can minimise the risk to nesting birds by driving on marked tracks, learning about bird behaviours, responding appropriately to bird behaviour, keeping pets off riverbeds or dogs on a leash.

8.6 Lakeshore Camping and Lakeshore Anchoring
Introduction
Similar issues are beginning to emerge in relation to lakeshore camping on the shores of Lake Waikareiti. Pressure from camping at Lake Waikareiti is of particular concern also, as suitable camping sites are limited to a small area adjacent to the hut where the environmental impacts are becoming evident. Given the unique values of Lake Waikareiti it is important that the adverse effects of camping are controlled. Increased visitor pressure on Lake Waikaremoana also occurs due to boat users anchoring in areas other than at Home Bay. In Home Bay, recreation moorings are
controlled by a three year term mooring concession system. Throughout the rest of the park, anchoring is currently unregulated. Boat users often anchor in areas other than at the Home Bay established mooring sites while cruising the lake or on holiday in the general area. These park users may or may not be using the boat for

The Ocala is a unique and fascinating forest that offers an accommodating climate for year round recreating. The mild winters are fine for family camping while a summer canoe trip down a palm-lined stream is a cool way to spend an August day. The temperatures for the dry months of November through February range from a daily average of 50 F to a high of 72 F. The summer season is much warmer and wetter. Short afternoon thundershowers often raise the humidity to about 90% while the temperatures range from 80 F to 95 F. The average rainfall is approximately 55 inches per year. Water plays an important part in a variety of recreational opportunities on the forest. There are huge springs, twisting streams and lakes for fishing and water skiing. Many of the scenic lakes were formed when limestone bedrock dissolved, permitting the surface layer to slump and fill with water. The cool crystal-clear water of Juniper Springs, Alexander Springs, Salt Springs and Silver Glen Springs entice many visitors to take a cool dip. Snorkelers frequently find a thrilling underwater view of fish, swaying vegetation and cavernous springs. No wonder the Ocala National Forest is one of the most heavily used National Forests in the United States. Some recreational activities require a pass or permit. Please see

Limiting Impact of Recreation on Water Quality Shoreland Best Management Practices
Number 5 of 18 in the Series
What Are Shoreland BMPs?
Best Management Practices (BMPs) are actions you can take to reduce your impact on the environment. BMPs have been described for agriculture, forest management, and construction. This fact sheet describes BMPs you can adopt on your shoreland property to help protect and preserve water quality. In many cases, the best management for shorelands may be retaining the natural characteristics of your property.
Keeping Your Lake or River Healthy
Recreational activities can adversely affect both water quality and the shoreline, particularly when they focus on the waterfront. You can minimize these adverse impacts by developing and practicing a stewardship attitude as you enjoy your shoreland property and participate in outdoor activities. Recreational opportunities are a primary reason people choose to live by or visit Minnesota lakes and rivers, and the demand on our water resources is always increasing. That increasing demand also increases the potential for damage to water quality and shorelines. Assessing and improving leisure-time activities will help preserve water quality for fish and wildlife habitat as well as for our own recreational purposes. Poor water quality can affect recreation in and on the water, degrade fish and wildlife habitat, pose a health risk for water-contact recreation, and threaten the safety of your drinking water supply.
