High desert habitat dedicated to the conservation of pronghorn antelope. Highlighting recreational activities, camping, hunting policies, biological data, and fire announcements.
http://sheldon-hartmtn.fws.gov/index.html
The Sheldon and Hart Mountain Refuges are remote and expansive jewels of high-desert habitat, set aside in the 1930s for the conservation of pronghorn antelope. Thirty years later, a centralized administrative office for the two refuges was established in Lakeview, Oregon to meet the increasing demands of managing these habitats and the need for basic commercial services and amenities. Today, refuge maintenance staff and field biologists remain at remote stations on the refuges while administration, outreach, biological investigations, and fire management services are provided from Lakeview. The Muskwa-Kechika Management Area appeals to a wide range of recreational audiences, and includes both backcountry recreation (e.g. access methods other than by highway, and more challenging outdoor activities) and front country recreation (e.g. easy access for vehicles, campers, amenities and recreational activities). The M-KMA Recreation Management Plan , currently nearing completion and approval, guides recreational activities in the M-KMA. As mentioned in the Access Management page, access to most of the M-KMA is by transportation methods such as horseback, boating, backpacking or recreational motorised vehicles such as ATVs in the summer and snowmobiles in the winter, as well as aircraft.
Examples of Recreation in the M-KMA
Stone Mountain Provincial Park houses a trail system for hiking that includes the "Flower Springs Trail," "Erosion Pillars Trail," and the "Summit Peak Trail." (BC Parks website). As well, Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park provides an excellent opportunity to view a complex geothermal ecosystem that is different from the broader ecosystems of the north and at the same time to enjoy a soak in the Alpha or Beta pools. The Wokkpash area offers a unique hiking experience to backpackers who are searching for a more challenging experience. This area is not easily accessed, but it provides an excellent example of hoodoos. Wokkpash Gorge, located in Northern Rocky Mountains Provincial Park is a long, narrow canyon with towering, closely spaced hoodoos shaped over time by the actions of water erosion.
