Save time, fuel, and weight with these tips for the camp chef.
    By Keith Morton
    The Pot Stops Here
The pot supports on some stoves, but especially the widely used MSR Whisperlite, are quite slippery. Unless the stove is absolutely level, vibration caused by boiling will make smooth-bottomed pots slide sideways of their own accord. The results are potentially disastrous! The pot bottoms will be less slick if a small amount of carbon has accumulated on them during use on a campfire. A great excuse for not polishing the bottom of that blackened pot, but not an option for most stove users!
    Choose a ridged-bottomed pot (right)
over a smooth-bottomed pot (left) or wrap a few cents' worth of wire around the pot supports
The best solution I've found is to wind some thin steel wire around the pot supports as in the photo. I use the common"mechanic's wire" or utility wire, which is soft and bendable enough to make the job easy, and of course it has no insulation to melt or burn.

YOUR NAME CAN BE HERE! Fishing National Parks ATV Photography ... About Us Cooking With the Ultimate Gear By Ed Quinlan In September and October, when hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts take to the field, you can never be sure exactly what to expect. A good trip can easily turn frustrating due to unexpected weather, difficult terrain or uncooperative game animals. One thing that doesn’t have to suffer are the meals. Who knows, you might even forget about the day’s challenges as you sink your teeth into a hot chunk of roast and potatoes. Traditionally, the campsite has been the center for all outdoor lore. A group of tired bodies gather around a makeshift fire, reclined in folding lawn chairs and talking up the day’s events over a plate of great grub. Camp cooking can be fast, easy and healthy; just follow these simple guidelines. Remember, a little planning goes a long way. Before leaving on your trip, create a menu with ideas from everyone in your camp. Make a list that consists of a variety of food options. Think of your favorite home meals and then plan to recreate them at the campsite. Don’t be afraid to try new dishes. I like to grab a cookbook and pick out some basic ideas. If you’ll be gone several days, try the same general dish twice, adding a new twist. For instance, I really can’t get sick of meat and potatoes. So, how about last year’s venison one night and chicken the next. There rarely seem to be leftovers, so plan accordingly.

Tom's Hobo Camp Cooking for Kayakers, and other food tips: Before I got turned on to Adventure Food's Bake Packer meals I got all my foodstuffs for camping at the grocery store. Yes, I dabbled in hiker's fare of dehydrated camping foods, some good, some not so good, mostly expensive, but for the most part I based every thing around getting stuff at regular old grocery stores, sometimes on the way to the put in. So I thought I would share some of my old recipes and strategies for camping cuisine. Breakfast: The most important meal of the day! What breakfast would be complete with out coffee? Don't bring grounds, filters or percolators, and God forbid that "cowboy coffee" technique. Get the best quality instant coffee you can find. It is quick, no horrible mess to dispose of and lighter than grounds. Repack your instant coffee into a plastic container or zip lock bag. Burying or burning coffee grounds is a big no-no! If you must have grounds, then you must pack them out. If you have consensus on creamer and sugar, mix it all together before the trip. Powder milk can be used as a creamer, but I like to bring a small lunch size box of real milk. It is sold under the brand name of Parmalat. It requires no refrigeration and is head and shoulders better than powder milk or non-dairy creamers. It is hard to find, but most big markets have it, and it is great for oatmeal too.
