Precolonial Cameroon

The territory which was to become Kamerun/Cameroon/Cameroun during the SCRAMBLE FOR AFRICA was neither a political nor cultural unity before the Germans appeared. In the southern, coastal areas political units were rather small and the religion practised animistic. Further north the Muslim SULTANATE OF SOKOTO, with it's center in Northern Nigeria, extended into Cameroon (the province of ADEMAUA). It's dominant ethnic group were the Muslim FULANI; Islam was state religion, but they ruled over many animistic peoples.
The northernmost stretch of Cameroon, adjacent to Lake Chad, was part of the KOTOKO which were conquered by the Empire of BORNU late in the 19th century and converted to Islam.
Protestant mission, by British, West Indian and American missionaries, began in 1845 at Victoria near Bimbia , in the coastal region. The chiefs of Duala offered to cede stretches along the coast to Britain as early as 1833; an offer which was repeated several times. The natives hoped the British would guarantee, and at the same time respect the Dualans' monopoly in the trade with the interior. The British, however, hesitated, fearing a protectorate over Cameroons would become a financial burden. When Britain, fearing French attempts for a colonial acquisition, acted, they were surprised by a German coup.
In 1884, GUSTAV NACHTIGAL arrived, obtained treaties from local chiefs and proclaimed Kamerun (at that time only a coastal stretch of territory) a German colony. Germany had trading interests in the area, second only to the British.

          History
          Early History to Independence
Throughout history the region witnessed numerous invasions and migrations by various ethnic groups, especially by the Fulani, Hausa, Fang, and Kanuri. Contact with Europeans began in 1472, when the Portuguese reached the Wuori River estuary, and a large-scale slave trade ensued, carried on by the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, French, and English. In the 19th cent., palm oil and ivory became the main items of commerce. The British established commercial hegemony over the coast in the early 19th cent., and British trading and missionary outposts appeared in the 1850s; but the English were supplanted by the Germans, who in 1884 signed a treaty with the Douala people along the Wuori estuary and proclaimed the area a protectorate.

Though West Africans love and revere their musicians, they have not always granted them high social status. A griot may provide the soul of a good wedding party, but he can also be seen as a hustler, and nobody you'd want your daughter to marry. As in other regions of the continent, many a West African star's story begins with the tale of how he or she studied and played music despite parental objections. And frequently, success involved a period of exile. Though Britain and France have long withdrawn from West Africa, their capitals, London and Paris, have provided a vital pathway for musicians in search of an international career. As musicians have moved back and forth, cultural dialogue has continued, and the cities have become important production centers. Meanwhile, West Africa has built up its own studios and production facilities, especially in Lagos, Nigeria, Dakar, Senegal, and Abidjan, Ivory Coast, the region's recording industry capital. At the most recent presidential poll in October 2004, Biya secured another seven-year term in office winning 70 per cent of the votes. International observers claim that the poll was fair and transparent but opposition parties made allegations of widespread fraud. Government The president and the 180-seat (National Assembly) hold executive and legislative power respectively. Both are elected for five-year terms. Further revisions to the existing 1972 constitution allow for the introduction of a second National Assembly chamber at a later date.

Cameroon Culture Back to Top Each major ethnic group of the nation has developed its own culture. The vigorous rhythms played on the drums by the people of the southern forest region contrast with the flute music of northern Cameroonians. In the Adamawa area, the Muslim Fulani produce elaborately worked leather goods and ornate calabashes and the Kirdi and the Matakam of the western mountains produce typical types of pottery. The powerful masks of the Bali, which represent elephants' heads are used in ceremonies for the dead, and the statuettes of the Bamileke are carved in human and animal figures. The Tikar people are famous for beautifully decorated brass pipes, the Ngoutou people for two-faced masks, and the Bamum for smiling masks. L'Institut Français d'Afrique Noire - French Institute of black Africa maintains a library in Douala that specializes in the sociology, ethnology, and history of Africa. Of the several museums, the Diamare and Maroua Museum has anthropological collections relating to the Sudanese peoples, and the Cameroon Museum of Douala exhibits objects of prehistory and natural history.

Reunification discourse has generated controversy in Cameroon since the 1990s and hinges on the issue of the degree of commitment of Anglophone and Francophone Cameroonians to its realization. This essay provides a chronological, comprehensive, and critical survey of the reunification question. Often only part of the history is presented, either inadvertently or deliberately. It is argued in this essay that reunification was a minority ideology conned largely to the Cameroon people of the Southwestern quadrant. That notwithstanding, its chief proponents were Francophones who conceived it, propagated it, and sustained it until the United Nations recognized it in the 1960s. The 1961 reunification of the British Southern Cameroons and the former French Cameroons was an extraordinary event, as peoples of different colonial backgrounds decided to form a single state. It presented a countercurrent in postcolonial Africa to the prevailing trend of the balkanization of old political unions or blocs.

History of the membership The continent's position as a crossroads between the Americas, Europe and Asia also lays it open to transnational crimes such as traffic in weapons, illicit drug trafficking, illegal immigration, traffic in stolen motor vehicles and fraud, which can only be stopped by international co-operation. Seeking and locating the criminals involved poses problems relating to information exchange, international identification and arrests with a view to extradition. This is why Interpol-in accordance with Article 2 (1) of its Constitution-ensures the closest possible co-operation between the criminal police authorities of all member countries, including those in Africa. Crime is not associated with a particular region and is certainly not a problem for Africa alone. Ever since it was established, the International Criminal Police Organization - Interpol has been seen by countries all over the world as an institution whose principles and objectives correspond to universal aspirations for human rights, public safety and the fight against ordinary law crime.
