Water and Culture
by Serena Williams , Kribi, Cameroon One interesting reflection of the importance of water in Kribi is manifested in cosmological/spiritual beliefs that many local peoples hold. Some of the local ethnic groups of the area are the Pygmy (migrants from the Eastern region) Batanga, Mabea (Mabi) and Ngoumba (Ngumba). Local peoples who subscribe to Christian doctrines often are baptized in rivers through full body immersion. Catholics use sprinkles of water to conduct the same or similar rites of passage. Yet more traditional cultural values reveal the use of water as a tool of revelation. Or as one woman said, "If you want to know the truth, you go to the water." A story was told that an older man was found dead one day in the house of his younger wife (he had two). Local people believed that the younger wife, who was not from the same ethnic group as the husband or the first wife, had intended to inherit all possessions by killing the husband. Claiming innocence, both women were taken to the river, where a large crowd of witnesses was gathered. They were thrown bodily into the river, with the understanding that coming out dry proved their innocence. Indeed, both women passed the test, and the husband was proclaimed dead from natural causes. Another use of water in culture is through purification. For example, unlike the purification symbolized by the Western tradition of baptism, bathing and cleansing takes place in the traditional system when families are believed to be cursed. If relatives are lost through bloody deaths, accidents, or if many family members are killed or die in a short period of time, the surviving relatives are purified with water and leaves to rid them of the curse that has overtaken their family.

Germany Info Home: World Cup: Germany Beats Cameroon to Advance
Match : Carsten Jancker goes up against midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe. dpa photo Germany beat Cameroon 2-0 on June 11 to advance to the World Cup round of 16. The game between the two leaders in Group E saw the continued rise to Cup stardom for Miroslav Klose, who scored his fifth goal of the tournament, another header, to seal the victory for Germany in the 79th minute. Klose was also key in the first goal in the 50th minute when he beat Cameroon defenders and found substitute Marco Bode who shot it past goalee Boukar Alioum. The game was perhaps most notable for its officiating, with the Spanish referee throwing a total of 16 yellow cards and ousting Germany's Carsten Ramelow in the 40th minute and Cameroon's Patrick Suffo in the 77th.
Foul : Referee Antonio Nieto Lopez red-cards Carsten Ramelow as teammate Michael Ballack looks on. dpa photo A tie was all Germany needed to secure the step into the round of 16. Both Cameroon and Germany led Group E with four points going into the game, but Germany had the goal-differential advantage. Cameroon tied against Ireland and beat Saudi Arabia 1-0. Germany also tied against Ireland, but beat Saudi Arabia 8-0. The game in Shizuoka, Japan, pitted coach Rudi Völler against his countryman Winfried "the Tiger" Schaefer who led Cameroon to become African Cup of Nations champions in 2000. But their loss against Germany means Cameroon exits the tournament. Ireland will advance after beating Saudi Arabia 3-0.

02 March 2005 Prize-winning film-maker Kim Longinotto took it as a challenge when the compere at last year’s OneWorld Broadcasting Trust’s Media awards ceremony said he hoped that the 2005 event would include films with positive images of Africa.
“It got me thinking,” recalls Longinotto. “Every film on Africa seemed to be about AIDS or refugees or war. I took it as a direct challenge.”
The woman she teamed up with for her next film - Florence Ayisi, a Cameroonian who teaches film and video at the University of Wales International Film School – felt the same.
“I have been very concerned about the images I have seen since I came to this country 19 years ago,” Ayisi says. “It’s always poverty, war and other problems: a staple diet of negativity. Of course, those things are there but it bothers that we don’t see any other reality.
