The Material Culture of Twins
in
West Africa. See pictures of Cameroon. Many cultures, including our own, celebrate the birth of twins, some view them as something dangerous that must be destroyed but is rare to find a society that is indifferent to this unusual occurrence. The treatment of twins in West Africa is particularly unusual, possibly due to the high twin rate in this area. In the Cameroonian Grassfields twins are generally regarded as gifts from God. They are highly celebrated and respected. My own experience as a 'Manyi' (mother of twins) in Cameroonian culture made me aware of the significance of twins to this society. With this research I hope to enlighten archaeologists working in West Africa. I would like to provide a data base of material culture associated with twins to allow correct interpretation of the archaeological record. This site is designed to teach you about Cameroon and all its rich history. My own work is available for you to read and of course you have to check out the fun stuff! After all, learning should be entertaining!

Our culture: The most successful businesses are held together by a distinctive culture, approach, way of working and common philosophy. At Diageo, many of these cultural values can be summed up in the words ‘passion', ‘energy', ‘pride' and ‘best'. We are passionate about our brands, about serving our consumers, and about leading the field in each market in which we compete. We are energetic about driving original thinking, new ways of working and better business practices in support of these goals. Hierarchies and conventions have no place in our business, so you will find us as relaxed and informal as we are driven and hardworking. But most of all, we are an organisation that respects, cares for and values our people – as they, and only they, make us what we are.
Social responsibility: Our industry makes a unique set of products. They can be part of occasions for great enjoyment, which is the case for most people who choose to drink. They can also be misused. For that reason, our industry has a special duty to market our products responsibly and to encourage responsible consumption. Diageo does not market any of its products to those under the legal purchase age, and actively works to support enforcement of laws against underage sales. To this end, Diageo has created our own unified, mandatory code of marketing practice covering all aspects of marketing, advertising, promotions, sponsorship, merchandising and packaging. The Diageo marketing code incorporates the most rigorous provisions from each of the industry codes and imposes additional requirements intended to affirm Diageo's commitment to promote responsible drinking.

Cameroon ( Cameroun ) Country Code: cm

of Cameroon Background:
The name Cameroon is derived from the Portuguese word, Camaroes, meaning shrimps. A Portuguese sailor Ferdanando Poo in 1472 arrived at the River Wouri in Douala and discovered so many shrimps in the river that he decided to call it Rio Dos Camaroes (River of shrimps, in Portuguese)... It was from this word that the territory derived is name which is now spelt in various forms: Spanish spelt it Cameroes; Germans, Kamerun; English, Cameroon; and French, Cameroun.
The territory was colonized by the Germans in1884 and after the end of the 1914-1918 war, Cameroon was mandated by the Ligue of Nations to the French and British governments. France took the greater sector, formally known as East Cameroon, while Britain took responsibility over former West Cameroon known then as "Cameroon under British Administration".
On january 01st 1960 the French Sector became independent under the new name of Cameroon Republic. Following agitation for independence by the Southern Cameroons - before the name was changed to West Cameroon - a plebiscite was held in that sector of Cameroon on February 11th 1961 under the United Nations supervision. The result of the plebiscite which was overwhelming for reunification (233,571 against 97,741) gave Southern Cameroons automatic independence and unification, which was achieved on October 01st 1961. Thus after the reunification of both sectors, the Federal Republic of Cameroon was born.

Cameroon
The Central African country of Cameroon lies just south of Nigeria on the Atlantic Coast. Cameroon is bordered on the south by Gabon and Congo, on the east by the Central African Republic and on the north by Chad. Roughly the size of California, Cameroon contains some of the most diverse ecological locales on the continent - from humid coastal and Eastern-province rain forests through temperate upland savannahs of the Northwest province to dry near-desert Sahel on the shores of Lake Chad. From Douala, the largest city and site of the country's international airport, we drove to Mundemba in the Southwest province, a frontier village that's become the jumping-off point for Korup National Park, a huge rain forest preserve near the Nigerian border. There we worked with healers from the forest peoples, documenting their traditional methods of gathering plants and preparing medications. We traveled next to the Northwest province city of Bamenda, a bustling commercial center for the region's rich agricultural economy. We visited villages in the surrounding mountain highlands to record medical and religious rituals performed by healers of the Bameleke ethnic group, a dynamic, mercantile people who dominate much of the commerce in the western part of the country.
