Papers on cameroon society and culture.

Mama for story
Editors: Ian Fowler and David Zeitlyn
Introduction
In order to thematise what we initially envisaged as a single volume we requested that papers should focus on the convergence of ethnography and history in the field of Cameroonian studies. The extensive and overwhelmingly positive response to our call presented us with the 'problem' of a wealth of riches that could not easily be produced as a single volume. This we have resolved by dividing the papers into three separate sets, each representing a different aspect of Mrs Chilver's interests. One set focuses on contemporary views of the state, its emergence through partition and reunification, the developing role of the chieftaincy, and key issues of gender and accumulation as they have developed in the modern state; another set of papers combine historical and anthropological analyses; and, finally, there are ethnographic accounts of topics such as witchcraft, divination and religion in the Grassfields region of Cameroon.
A set of three collections that have been inspired by the work of Mrs E.M. Chilver, known to many as Sally Chilver 'Mama for Story'. The project is being published in the following forms: 1) Half of Paideuma (the journal of the Frobenius Institute) for 1995 is devoted to a collection entitled PERSPECTIVES ON THE STATE:
FROM POLITICAL HISTORY TO ETHNOGRAPHY IN CAMEROON.

Introduction
Situated in West Africa, Cameroon is shaped like an elongated triangle. It borders with Chad in the north and northeast, Central African Republic in the east, Congo, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea in the south, the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean) in the Southwest, and to the west and northwest lies Nigeria.
There are four geographical regions. The southern region extends from the 226 mile coastline eastward to the Middle Congo Basin between the southern frontier and the Sanaga River. It consists of coastal plains of an average width of 27 miles and a densely forested plateau at an average elevation of 960 feet. The central region extends from the Sanaga River northward to the Benue River and includes the Adamawa Plateau, at elevations of 2,500 ft to 4,500 ft. This is a transitional area where forest gives way to savanna. The northern region is essentially a vast savanna plain that slopes down to the Chad basin. The west is dominated by forested mountains with peaks reaching above 8,000 ft. Of the two main rivers, the Benue is navigable several months during the year, and the Sanaga is not navigable.

People of Cameroon Cameroon is made up of about 200 ethnic groups who speak as many different languages. The Bantu-speaking peoples inhabit the south, and Sudanic-speaking people dominate the north. Among the more important ethnic groups are the Bamileke, a Bantu-speaking people, and the Fulani who are Muslims. French and English are both official languages but the former is widely used. While about half of the people of Cameroon live in urban areas, the other half, consisting of farmers, live in small towns or villages in southern and central Cameroon. The people follow various religious beliefs- 24 percent adhere to traditional religions, about 21 percent follow Islam and the remaining population follow Christianity. Flag of Cameroon The flag of Cameroon is made up of three equal vertical bands of green (hoist side), red, and yellow. The middle red band has a yellow five-pointed star.
Please click here to view the Flag of Cameroon
Economy of Cameroon The economy of Cameroon is to a certain extent dependent on agriculture, which is the main occupation of about 70 percent of Cameroon's population. Then the country has a rich resource of timber but the main source of revenue is generated through petroleum reserves. The country has also large reserves of bauxite and natural gas, though they have yet to be exploited. Hydroelectric power stations on Cameroon's rivers, particularly the Sanaga, provide enough electricity to meet almost all of the country's needs. In 1999, the national budget showed revenues of $1.4 billion and expenditures of $1.4 billion.

A people of hunters and gatherers, Baka Pygmies live in the rain forest of Cameroon, Gabon and Congo, together with various ethnic groups of Bantu farmers, with whom they exchange goods and have a symbiotic relationship from time immemorial. Like the other groups of African Pygmies (BaKola, Aka, BaBongo, BaMbuti, BaTwa, etc.), Baka Pygmies are traditionally nomadic, even though they are undergoing a process of sedentariness under the influence of multiple factors. The first of these factors is massive deforestation, which deprives the Pygmies of the natural and symbolic resources essential for their biological and cultural survival...

Yaoun De - Culture Yaounde, Cameroon's capital, is an African city with an international profile.Cameroon's tropical climate is ideal for agriculture and bestows the country with a lush beautyCameroon is united in its love for dancing and music. The distinctive national musical style known as makossa has perennial popularity. Most Cameroonians identify themselves with a particularethnic group, which is really an extended community of people with similar background, language, and customs. Cameroonians know the town or village they "belong to", even if removed by several generations of relocation and intermarriage. Cameroon is thus an intricate tapestry of cultures, not easily understood in terms of the European concepts of political districts and administrative boundaries.Cameroon is located in west Africa, just east of Nigeria. It extends from the Atlantic ocean northward to Lake Chad. The Congo rain forest extends into the southeastern part of the country, and the Sahara desert encroaches on the north. Along the western edge of Cameroon is a volcanic mountain range. Fako (Mt. Cameroon), the country's highest point at 4100 meters, is only a few miles from the southwestern coast. Southern Cameroon is densely forested. Lumber, palm oil, bananas, and plantains are some important products of this region. Douala, Cameroon's largest city and economic center, is located at the mouth of the Wouri river and is a major port city. Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, is located in the southeast. Traditional culture of the peoples of southern Cameroon (such as the Duala, Bulu, and Bakweri) centers on the family and village, lacking large-scale political structures.

People and Culture of Mount Cameroon The population in the region (about 300,000 people) is made up of the indigenous Bakweri, Bomboko and Balondo tribes and immigrant population from other parts of Cameroon and neighbouring countries like Nigeria. The local community especially in the towns is therefore diverse and complex with a mixture of cultures and the dynamics of modern society. Agriculture, fishing and harvesting forest products are key livelihoods occupations for the rural population. The Bakweri people belong to a group called Bantus. They have been living around Mount Cameroon for at least 4000 years. Today, there are 85 Bakweri villages of various sizes, located between 500 and 1000m above sea level as a result of the German plantations, which forced the coastal Bakweri villages up the mountain. With one family occupying most villages, there was no need for strong political authority. The elders gave executive orders and judged in cases of dispute. The position of village head is a European creation. The Germans and British installed the position of paramount-chief as an intermediary in their system of indirect rule. After independence, these 'traditional' rulers are still being used in the same way, paid by the ruling party in Cameroon. Social organisations among the Bakweris are strongly based on various secret societies. The most important groups for men are Male and Nganya, while women organise themselves in the Liengu and Malowa (Maloa) secret societies.
