The Bachelor of Arts in History provides students with knowledge of Khmer, Asian, and World history, with a particular focus on the socio-economic and political development of Cambodia and the Southeast Asian region.
Graduates can enter a number of professional fields, including teaching, research, and work at various ministries, libraries and non-government organizations. (back to top) Background

This history course was established in 1980 and developed gradually alongside similar courses in neighbouring ASEAN nations with the help of New Humanity, Italy and the Toyota Foundation. It was established to promote knowledge of national identity and international events, and to develop human resources necessary for building Cambodia, a place that has never lacked the experience of history. It is hoped that the students of history will help promote Cambodia by understanding the history of the world and their own country. (back to top)

THE ORIGIN OF THE PRESENT POLITICAL, SOCIAL AND LEGAL SYSTEM OF CAMBODIA AS A REVOLUTIONARY RUPTURE WITH THE PAST By Basil Fernando The attempt to see a continuity in the political changes that have taken place in Cambodia since its independence has led several observers to underestimate the revolutionary impact of the period beginning with the capture of power by the Khmer Rouge and ending, theoretically speaking, with the signing of the Paris Agreements. If the proneness to violence is used as the test of revolutionary change, then “modern Cambodian politics may be seen as a succession of brutal changes, involving merciless replacement of ruling elites.” From this point of view, the overthrow of the Sihanouk regime by Lon Nol will differ from the Khmer Rouge takeover only quantitatively but not qualitatively. However, a socialist revolution is not a mere replacement of one elite by another. It involves a total transformation of the political and social fabric of a country. The change that takes place is a substantive one. Once such a transformation takes place, the return to the status quo involves a fundamental and substantive change in the political and social fabric. A theoretician will naturally feel more comfortable in dealing with a situation of continuity rather than of revolutionary change. Naturally most of the constitutional laws deal with situations of continuity even after periods of disruptions. Even the change from feudalism to capitalism has many aspects of continuity. Often centuries pass before such transformation is completed.

Hun Sen offers to form coalition with Cambodian rival
    July 29, 1998
Web posted at: 8:25 p.m. EDT (0025 GMT) PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (CNN) Hun Sen, the apparent front-runner in last Sunday's parliamentary balloting in Cambodia, said Wednesday that he might be willing to form a coalition with his chief political rival, Prince Norodom Ranariddh, the co-prime minister he ousted a year ago. "I think we can cooperate with FUNCINPEC," Hun Sen said, referring to Ranariddh's party. "It would be a good way to establish a coalition. We can solve deadlock. We can't avoid each other." There was no immediate word from Ranariddh on the offer, though a senior FUNCINPEC official said it was too early to begin talk of coalition building. But despite his conciliatory words, Hun Sen also said that if opposition groups continue to threaten a boycott of Parliament to keep him out of power, he might unilaterally change the country's constitution and rule on his own a move that threatens to plunge Cambodia into political turmoil.

In many people's minds, this may be the last country you'd think of Bustling capital Phnom Penh in the south, home to one million people, is the starting point of this seven night two-centre tailor-made holiday to Cambodia. The relentless pace of life in an Asian city can be a shock to the system, especially after a 15 hour flight from the UK. There's no public transport in Phnom Penh. There are taxis but most people go for the cheaper option of cyclos and tuk-tuks. A faster, white knuckle option is riding pillion on the scooter taxis for 25p a mile. With all options, agree a price before you set off. With average temperatures in the mid 30s, the huge dome of the Central Market, a legacy of French rule, is a welcome relief. Open from sunrise to sunset, it sells everything from fake designer goods to unusual savoury snacks. Jennifer was offered a bag of crunchy cockroaches, but preferred to snap up sunglasses, bags, and an outfit for only £2. Like most capital cities you'll see poverty, particularly around the tourist areas. Cambodia is still a poor country with a welfare system to match. Begging is the norm here and you may see some disturbing sights. Keep a few local notes worth 10p or so for when you want to give.

    Name: King Norodom Sihanouk
    Location: Cambodia
    Affiliation: FUNCINPEC
    Profession: king, movie director, songwriter
    Born: All Hallows Eve, 1922
    Died: -n/a-
    Claim to Fame: his dimples
    Body Count: unknown
Other: ASIDE FROM GEMSTONES, virgin timber and grisly metaphors, wily politicians are Cambodia's most ample natural resource. Politicians here don and discard more masks by lunchtime than their colleagues in Vietnam or Thailand do all day. The grey eminence of Cambodia's slippery political class is a kind of National Grandpa, King Norodom Sihanouk. The King has carefully crafted his latter-day reputation as a benevolent father figure, but he wasn't always this way. As a young buck, Sihanouk bagged more broads than Wilt Chamberlain (he claimed it's a family tradition). At peace conferences during his exile, he would often break out into spontaneous renditions of Tom Jones medleys between wise aphorisms about shooting craps and seducing movie stars. He's written several hundred songs and his film work in the 1970s makes him the most accomplished director in Cambodian history. Sihanouk was described as "feisty" by admirers, "vain" by detractors and "god" by Cambodians being worked to death in the insane agrarian nightmare of the Khmer Rouge - to which the old man would smile and play a little jazz saxophone. He was sometimes pro-Charlie, sometimes pro-American; sometimes backing the Khmer Rouge against his domestic enemies, sometimes opposing them. The philosophy behind the Sihanouk mystique is that he is always pro-Sihanouk.
