Cambodian PM fares well in polls
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia Preliminary results from Cambodia's first-ever local elections show the prime minister's party winning a large majority of seats in the capital. The weekend vote hailed as a major step toward strengthening democracy in Cambodia was to choose councils to govern 1,621 communes or clusters of villages across the Southeast Asian nation. While official results won't be known for weeks, Hun Sen's good showing in the capital for the ruling Cambodian People Party, or CPP, is expected to be reflected across the country. The CPP has held power for more than 20 years in the countryside. About 85 percent of Cambodia's 11 million people live in rural areas. Modern History
The Funan and Chenla Kingdoms (1st - 9th centuries) The Kingdom of Angkor (9th -15th Centuries) The great stone buildings of Angkor, constructed by both Hindu and Mahayana Buddhist kings, were the focus of Hindu or Buddist cults to celebrate the divinity or Buddhahood of the royal family. Their construction reflected the Hindu mythological universe, both in their architecture and in the many carvings which adorn them. The society of this empire was hierarchical, with the divine king owning both the land and the subjects. The Brahman priesthood and the official class constituted the elite; the remaining population consisted of the peasants who grew the crops and were subject to high taxes and labor services and a large slave class which did most of the heavy work of building the temples and other buildings. Cambodian PM set for vote victory
Hun Sen looks set for victory, but may still have to form a coalition. Story Tools PHNOM PENH, Cambodia The Cambodian prime minister appears to have won a sweeping victory in the country's general election. The Cambodian People's Party led by Prime Minister Hun Sen said Monday that it expects to win 73 of 123 national assembly votes. If the numbers are confirmed it will give the party eight additional seats in the assembly, but Hun Sen will still have to form a coalition government. A two-thirds majority, or 82 seats, are needed to govern. Official results are not due until August 8, but independent monitors said the tally from the weekend's vote favors the prime minister. The balloting was largely peaceful, although voting was marred by a grenade explosion Sunday outside the headquarters of the opposition FUNCINPEC party, injuring one person. Sunday's election was Cambodia's third since a 1991 U.N. brokered peace deal that ended decades of civil war. The 1975-79 Khmer Rouge genocidal rule left about 1.7 million people dead.

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has hit out at his own government, accusing it of incompetence in its handling of last week's anti-Thai riots in Phnom Penh. Hun Sen also denied claims from the opposition that he incited the rioting, in which the Thai embassy and over a dozen Thai-owned businesses in the Cambodian capital were torched, looted and vandalized. "The government was incompetent for failing to crack down on the riots for the following reasons: we could not control the inflammatory information, [and] we did not used armed force to shoot the rioters," Hun Sen told a crowd at a temple inauguration in Kampot.

Cambodian parties begin crafting new coalition
November 19, 1998
Web posted at: 6:11 p.m. EST (2311 GMT) PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (CNN) Rival political parties in Cambodia began talks Thursday on the details of forming a coalition government. Former political enemies Hun Sen and Prince Norodom Ranariddh agreed last week to join forces in a new government, with Hun Sen as prime minister and Ranariddh as president of the National Assembly, which would become the lower house of parliament. A key factor in the agreement is establishing an upper house, or senate, to be led by Chea Sim, head of Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party (CPP). Working groups from the CPP and Ranariddh's royalist FUNCINPEC party must first decide on the senate's powers, size and how members would be appointed. Ranariddh has said the new body should be limited to analyzing legislation passed by the National Assembly. Creating the senate would require amending Cambodia's constitution.

Ousted Cambodian prince to return from exile
Ranariddh confirms plans to return to Cambodia after months in exile
Prince Ranariddh plans tentative March 30 homecoming
March 23, 1998 Web posted at: 2:33 p.m. EST (1933 GMT)
In this story:
BANGKOK, Thailand (CNN) Deposed Cambodian co-leader Prince Norodom Ranariddh confirmed Monday he would return to his homeland next week, ending eight months of exile and setting the stage for elections in July. Ranariddh, ousted by fellow co-premier Hun Sen in a bloody coup last July, set a tentative date of March 30 to return. He said an advance team would head to Cambodia to assess the security risk. "I'm so happy to be going home from this forced exile," Ranariddh told reporters outside his Bangkok residence, adding that he felt confident his safety in Cambodia would be assured. "I do not think that ... Hun Sen should do anything in order to harm the process." The prince, who left the capital Phnom Penh before the coup, intends to run in elections on July 26, a key provision in an international plan to restore peace, foreign aid and legitimacy to Cambodia.
